Easy Butterfly Charts with Excel Pivot Tables

  • Butterfly charts, or two bar charts going in opposite directions, can be a show-stopper of a data visualization technique. In Excel, two Pivot Tables working together can create this effect easily. Neil Malek from Knack Training demonstrates how to use Slicers to direct a dynamic version of the butterfly chart.

    In certain data set and filter choice from slicer, the bars' heights change filling up multiple rows and thus messing up the alignment of middle labels and the bars. e.g. when I choose 3 products where Male has 4 bars (age ranges) but female has 3 bars (or a different number than the middle labels). Any way around that? Thanks

      Go to your Values, and choose Field Settings. On the Layout & Print tab, click the checkbox Show items with no data.
