And no you can't just take the "good" with out that bad because people have no control over the societies they create. The problem isn't the existence of technology but instead the complex and self developing system behind it which runs all our societies. You can't choose to have a phone and not have it be used to spy on you, you can't choose to walk in a society that integrates cars, you can't choose to have technology and not be used against you in favor of the system. The structure of your life is entirely dictated by the whims of the system and it's borderline inescapable effects do necessitate the mental degredation of its citizens because no society can run on a free self actualized populace. By necessity you would need a bunch of docile workers whittling away their years in jobs they hate without any freedoms in order to keep the system going. Having a job and a career is not freedom nor do people find any meaningful joy in air conditioning or Netflix.
