I've been playing guitar 25 years and I don't suck. Marty is the best teacher out there in my opinion. I learn something everyday from Marty. Rock on.....peace and love to everyone!
I love when Marty says, "Check it out" ( kind of a Marty trademark as is his opening "hey WHAT"S up?" ) .... been watching and learning from him since day one ... he is so unique and so real and superbly talented and has knack for teaching ... and I love the way he will in one lesson cover it for newbies ..and then add upgrades for those who are ready for more ! Thanks once again Marty !
Wow this guy is good! I knew the chords but the strumming was confusing me. He made it clear. Love the trick of going from C to G easily. Hey that rhymed....
Hey Marty! Started playing guitar last March, and even still in July couldn't even imagine to be able to play Knocking on Heaven's Door in December... Finger pain, pain in the neck, pain in the back... But here we are, next month I'll be returning to my home country The Netherlands and play this Tom Petty song for my old dad. It's a race against time 😂, but I'll get there and he'll be hugely surprised. Thank you Marty for this video, it helps me a lot!!
Thanks for the great lesson, Tom Petty was huge in my family growing up so figured I should learn something as tribute. Rip Tom! I'm sure he's rocking with the rest of the Wilburys now...
My new fav guitar channel. You play the entire song first so bros who are OK on guitar can get what they need in a minute and get out. Fabulous work, sir. Subscribed.
Thank you for your videos Marty. Besides making my dark days better, you are an excellent teacher. I've been subbed and following you since the beginning of the channel. I've learned my favorite songs and found a love for both the acoustic and the electric guitar. It's been a good escape for me and helped with my PTSD and depression; music truly is healing. This channel has always been quality and my choice for learning songs and music. Thanks again Marty, I appreciate your videos and your passion for making music (teaching it too!).
Wow I finally got this song down with the right strumming pattern and rhythm. After 2 years! I highly recommend doing some strumming patterns and Rhythm practice if your guitar skills are not up to par. Incredible I took a really simple strumming pattern and rhythm tutorial and after learned how to play a song correctly in one day that I'd been trying to learn for 2 years.
You know Marty, every time I go to learn a song and you’ve got a cover you do a good job teaching me. Hats off to you bro - keep on making young guitarists grow and being a leader for the community
Marty- thank you so much for your help with my favorite- Tom Petty! Im a guitar strumming late bloomer! I know you've posted these many years ago, but Im just getting to them now, and its greatly appreciated!
Hey thanks Marty I really appreciate it I’ve started playing a couple of months ago and I’ve learned a few of the baisicly chords and this is my most favorite song so having you play this and teach it is amazing because this is the best way that I could learn this
At about 4:00 Marty teaches a trick for the fast C G C change and G C D change. Those are the open chords. But barre chords can do it fast too. I think I prefer that, and the voicing isn't a big change. But do watcha like yo.
Hey guys, I wanted to make a slight timing correction to this song. During the verses The Em and D are all on down beats and the G is anticipated. The anticipations occur in the chorus are correct. So if you're playing with the song and it sounds like you're rushing the changes in the verses even though your playing in time that's why. If you listen to Mike Campbell's rhythm part its really clear. Love this channel, but just wanted to point that out to anyone who might have to learn this for a gig.
Hey Marty do you give online lessons? You are the only person that makes sense to me. Everyone else is too complicated. I was able to post this in about 15-minutes after having finger surgery last year on my right hand. Thank you!! 💖
Hey Marty: New Subscriber, though I’ve been sneaking in and out of your channel as I needed help with various songs. You always know how to explain things in a unique way- so that we learn it! Thanks so much for your efforts! Especially this past week or so, these Tom Petty lessons somehow lessened the gutpunch I felt when I learned about his passing. Sad sad day. Same day I had to put my 20 year old cat down. Then Vegas happens. Then Jason Aldean opens SNL with Won’t Back Down! So really, to just get lost in jamming some Tom Petty you taught me really made this past week bearable. Thanks Marty! Truly. You Rock!
thanks mary, you make the songs so easy to play, both you and mike gross. ive been a subscriber for a while now and i learned most of my songs from you
Wow. 8 Minutes and I learned a new song correctly. You cant do better than that. I guess that's why your channel is the best one on YT for learning the guitar the right way. Thanks for posting this one.
Marty you have helped me so much in my journey of learning how to play the guitar.Marty Music is such an awesome way to learn some new songs to play, some easy and some are a little harder. Thanks for making this available man because my dad didn't have this kinda stuff growing up and is amazed at how much I've learned from your videos. You should do some Soundgarden/ Audioslave videos. Heavens dead is one that Ive been working on but can't quite figure out.. Thanks Marty!
Never give up that is what this song reminds me of. It helped me to form a Will stronger than Iron a will of STEEL! And thanks to this I will make it! I'll succeed even if everyone abandons me I will live to see my purpose through to success! 💪🏽✊🏽
Marty. You are just great. I know when you teach something I can get it if I work at it. Your explanations are clear and usable. Keep up the good work. Thanks. Joel
lol, you've given a crazy good instructional video..! reminds me of how my dad teaches a song, "with a c - g - c, and a back do D, always!" ;) ...then "NO G!" Love and grew up on Tom.. Last Dance on the outro, lol
Hey Marty, Jaron here! I would greatly appreciate your help learning these songs. 1. Clutch - Cyborg Bette 2. Bob Dylan - House Carpenter 3. The Cars - You Might Think 4. Red Fang - Wires 5. Crash Test Dummies - Afternoons and Coffeespoons 6. The Donnas - Who Invited You 7. Franz Ferdinand - Katherine Kiss Me 8. Jethro Tull - Mother Goose (How can you not love this song?) 9. Jim Croce - I got a name 10. Lou Reed - This Magic Moment 11. NOFX - Linoleum 12. Paul Simon - Gumboots / Paranoia Blues 13. Rev Horton Heat - Baby, I’m Drunk 14. Sublime - What happened? I just heard the bad news about petty, not the greatest day for me so I'm learning this and not stopping until I get it perfect! Prayers to his family, rip tom petty
Your a great teacher Marty. I'm a great bass player, but you turned me into a good acoustic guitar player. I just ordered a electric guitar and amp. Thanks Blessings,❤ n Aloha Marty
Love this mate, do you ever upload a song with you playing along or just playing the chords? Definitely getting there but would be awesome to hear the whole thing through
This is the next song I need to learn just not in the right place to even play at the moment, it’s next to me as always my Strat, then hear the chords as I’m typing and cool il give it a go as it looks like just remembering the rhythm as know the chords
Thanks for the lesson Marty. Appreciate you taking the time to do these and help guys like myself who just love to play for the enjoyment of the Music. I have a favor to ask. I love your lessons of songs by The Eagles. When you have the time to put it together, could you do a lesson on Tequila Sunrise by them ? Would love to hear your version of that song. .TIA
Good job man. I've always liked Tom Petty but usually play more Rush and Sabbath and stuff as well as just jamm to stuff I make up with all sorts of weird chords I've learned over the years. Whenever I want to play these easier tunes (Like by Tom Petty) i look up your lessons because it is so much easier than trying to just pick them up by ear (has to do with time). I like your presentation. ;). Petty songs are so simple but oh so good! *A good song doesn't HAVE TO BE DIFFICULT! I'm gonna check out more of what you have posted. Thanks.

But the Em D G.

I like how you combined the notes Tom used with the rhythm Johnny Cash used in his version of Won't Back Down. I don't think many people noticed that.
