- In this video I go over what is perhaps my favourite piece of gear on my bike. It has helped me to stay comfortable on those bumpy off road section throughout the world. It helps to combat fatigue, improves control and with some shopping around doesn't have to be overly expensive. It has proven to be extremely durable and easy to use. If I could only chose one upgrade to make my bike more comfortable: this would be it!

Hey Eric. I bought a Thudbuster on your recommendation from a previous video about two years ago. I am so pleased I did and it has been fantastic for touring. I would recommend it to anyone reading this. The Thudbuster is also strong and reliable, unlike many alternatives on the market. I have close to 20,000 km on mine and it is as good as new.

If you are on a budget then I can recommend the SR Suntour NCX (~$70). Been using that model for years with good results.

I vouch for Canyon / Ergo leaf spring seat post. It's lightweight and takes out the road buzz like a champ. I would 100% buy it again if I bought a new bike.

I have the Suntour NCX seatpost arriving in the mail tomorrow. It's a much more budget-friendly option and judging by the reviews I've seen and read, the performance is fantastic for the price.
Who knows how it will fare in the long-run in terms of durability, but I think with a bit of care and maintenance it could be a winner.
I'm planning on uploading a review of my first impressions, but I have high hopes!

Seatpost suspension is a huge performer. One of the great benefits on nimble bikes with narrow tires is that the suspension has the effect of pushing back and planting the tires on the ground when they would otherwise hop and skip over.
A neoprene cover is is strongly recommended to keep out the elements for the Cane Creek options.

That is good to hear. It would be great to find out the difference between the two in terms of service or failure rate. We also have to wait for other riders to report in. I'm also curious about short travel versus long travel responses. I always felt the LT 3G added too much movement.
Hi Eric. Yes, suspension seat posts make a huge difference. I have the ncx suntour version and would never go back to go back to riding without a suspension seatpost. A question / suggestion for you to consider: a multi-pivot handle bar stem suspension post like Kinekt make (not single pivot stems like those made by Redshift which are not effective for flat bar and sweepback handlebars set-ups). I see very positive reviews on stem suspension posts by riders who don't have front suspension forks on their bikes. It may be something for you to try. My bicycle has a front suspension fork and so this is not something I have tried but I know that I would check this out if I didn't have that.
Thanks for the tip! The multi-pivot seems the better approach indeed. I had my eye on the Redshift one for many years. They are expensive and currently not available in the size I need for my bike. I will be on the lookout though to get my hands one one of those and test them. Best wishes!
I’ve used the old school spring post with a springer seat on commuter/ beach cruiser bikes, what a difference in comfort.

Suspension seatpost is one of the best things I have bought. Also better uphill. I do not know why, I just can ride up hills I could not ride up previously.

Just got done bikepacking the eastern divide route WV to Florida I used the Redshift Shock Stop pro seat post and handle bar stem on my ridged Poseidon Redwood highly recommended it complete game changer , if don’t know it’s mostly off road , gravel , double track , mountain bike single track trails only on paved when had to was such a amazing ride and them two things was probably the best decision ever for that route

Thank you for the review. Definitely will look into the Canecreek seat shock. I have one bike (Cannondale Topstone with Kingpin suspension built in and really like it) Now I can get the same comfort on my other bikes.

Also got a suspension seatpost from a more economical brand and testing it found it taking the peaks of small jolts even with the stiffest elastomer making a difference. Have yet to take it on a long tour but that's coming up!.

Hi! Clearly, we're not going back. I have 4 installed on my 4 bikes (for around 15 years) + 1 in reserve. I only have one of the same brand as yours, and it's the lightest. Also, the screws on the locking rail cover are loosening and it's quite unpleasant although the saddle has never come loose from the rails. The other 3 are Sr Suntour SP12 NCX and cheap (approx. CHF 65) and after thousands of km, they all work properly. I also have saddles that are a little more comfortable than yours;) Looking forward to seeing you again on your trip^^

Great video Eric and maudi, very well spoken Eric I have a basic spring one and even this is very welcome ,tyres can also help if a little air is let out but beware pinch flats, also letting air out tends to slow 🐌 your bike ,it has to depend on terrain take care guys.

I drove the Thudbuster LT for a long time. It has a little more spring, but the distance between the saddle and the frame must be large enough. My experiences are similar to yours, among other things, that the seat is very durable. The only point of criticism. In winter the elastomers become harder and less springy. That's why I always used softer ones - elastomers for lower weight - in the winter.

Never tried it. I would be worried about the open spring collecting dust and grime though.

By Alee (CyclingAbout), he shared about a suspension handlebar stem called: Vecnum; kind of pricey, but by his trial in use of it, it works well compared to other suspension stems.

I would love to have one of these, if it wasnt for the cost...
But its on my list, maybe one day if i end up doing a very big bike tour.
That is the way I did it.
I have the Kinekt seat post in use on several bikes, they are expensive but compensate for vibrations very well. Every bicycle becomes much more comfortable
On a Surly ecr I own, it also compensates for the rebound of the 29+ tires. (3 inch)
Although I don't know how they perform during huge distances like you guys do. 😄
Everything that has to move constantly wears out.
Maybe is waxing the bushings for intensive use recommended?
That sounds great! Intersting that they compensate for the big tyre rebound, I haven't thought about that. Indeed everything that moves wears out. The bushing have a kind of lubrication on the inside where the pivot inserts! Thanks & best wishes!

I'd like to try one of these to see how it feels. I suffer from back problems, so jolts through the saddle can be painful! I use a Brooks Flyer saddle (with springs) which does give some shock absorption, but any Brooks saddle will give a bit of protection because of the leather flexing.

Many in cycling looks wrong like they don't wanna develop useful things. This looks smth basic all bikes should carry . I'm also very concerned about how all gears are totally exposed to any damage I'm planning to buy or weld smfh to cover the gear box looks so fragile already bent it once. Many in cycling looks a bit wrong like there is lot of undeveloped things that are outdated .thx for this channel

Quick Reminder: Be careful with that kind of seat posts if you have issues with your knee (patella tendon). The degree of suspension should then not be too extensive.

There is a better method for comfort which is high volume tires, at least 2.1" and with low pressure. While I also have a suspension post, my tire setup allows me to ride over the cobblestones present everywhere here in portugal as well as hitting the trails, fully loaded or not. Soft tires are also less prone to cuts. For longer spells on pavement just pump them up a bit.
They sure help and a combination of the two is even better. Still for most the suspension seatpost will be a no fuss upgrade. Wider tyres are possibly unable to fit or have problems with fenders. Soft tyres are less prone to cuts but I have had multiple snakebites touring with less pressure in my tyres!
@@WheelstoWander Yes, bigger tires don't fit all bicycles. Myself, living in a very hilly area with many trails, automatically bought a mtb. It came with 2.1" tires, not too big and heavy, and super low gears, good for heavy loads. The fenders are away from the tires to avoid mud accumulation. I understand that old schools bicycles have advantages on pavement touring but off-roading is such a pleasure and safe and with stiff bicycles it must be a pain. I've done many fully loaded tours on mine with regular panniers, on and off road. Additionally the front suspension avoids the rattle on the wrists and can be locked too. Regading the cuts on tires maybe mtb ones have better sidewall protection and more space to deform instead of thin ones, I don't know. I've never pinched mine on the rims. In short, I ride my hardtail mtb as if on the clouds but then there is no perfect bicycle, just compromises. Truly enjoy your channel, keep up the good work.

It's much more complicated, what makes it a liability on tour, and not ideal with a rack & luggage!

Do these not offset the seat and affect geometry? I had to return a Suntour NCX because the seat was way too back and I felt I was pedaling in front, not beneath me.
They do when compressed but that is only a very small percentage of the time spent in the saddle. I haven't found any issues with that!
I've been riding with one for a few years and even when I travel and rent/borrow a bike, I throw the post and saddle in my luggage.
I've had to service mine and am glad to report that cane creek's support department is excellent! There's no group mailbox, no unhelpful form emails, none of that. I used the contact form on their website and a day or two later I received a direct email from an actual human being. They had answers to all of my questions and stock replacement parts for all of their products, including older or discontinued models.
It was the most helpful and most pleasant interaction I've had with a business in the last five years.

It's very individual. For me the SP suspension was horrible. I bought the same one several years ago. I even tried several hardness levels of elastomer......

BUT... I use much softer saddle. I love the series of the Velo plush saddles. Available in a variety of sizes and for many riding types. And Not expensive. 25-30USD.
