Awesome, hope you guys watch the OVA movie Frozen Bond if you want more Re Zero and a a bit more Emilia backstory it's a great watch (especially before S2 imo). There's another OVA called Memory Snow but that isnt necessary it's more of a wholesome extra content thing but still a nice watch.

You guys are definitely correct that the feelings Rem has toward Subaru is a parallel to the feelings Subaru has toward Emilia. The other thing to keep in mind is that even outside the romantic feelings, Rem is forever grateful to Subaru for getting her out of her own head and move on from her depression. She sees Subaru going through that same thing and wants to help him too. Outside of all the insane plot devices, this entire show needs to be looked at as a giant metaphor for depression and loneliness, and the cast of characters are learning different ways to connect with people (not just romantically) and help each other out.
best way ive heard it said, "without realzing it, the show ends up being a sort of video essay on the idea of 'learning to love yourself'. From Rem, to Subaru, to even Emilia. And each one helps the other get there."

This is the first ever anime scene I cried for. It was so beautiful I was overwhelmed with how positive of a speech was delivered in the most depressive time. Beautiful writing
So far, the anime hasn't made me cry yet. However, there is a scene in the web novel that never fails to make me cry no matter how many times I read it. I hope that scene is adapted well in the anime. I guess it helps that the web novel can be more descriptive, and Tappei isn't limited by an "episode duration" so he can make chapters as long as they need to be.

@@koboi491 Arc 6 is just amazing and it sure has plenty of great moments, but the scene I'm talking about is the "broadcast" speech in Arc 5. I just feel like the way Tappei wrote it in the POV of a vulnerable child, crushing her hope at every line only to raise it up to extreme heights at the last moment just hits different.
The first anime scene I cried in was from Erased. I recommend it.

A lot got made of the “I love Emilia” moment when it first aired and in that moment you feel for Rem.
But, It’s not that he doesn’t feel anything for Rem. He just felt in that moment telling her anything other than what his original goal was, would be an insult to her and why she was trying so hard to save Subaru.
By telling her this which she already knew, she knows now her hero has picked himself back up and regained his resolve to save everyone and not run away. It’s a real turning point for Subaru and his open relationship he forms with Rem as well.
A lot of people get confused when Subaru then in the following episodes is falling all over for Rem after having just said he loves Emilia. Feelings can quickly change but Subaru already harbored strong feelings for Rem. they only intensified even more in this episode and beyond to where he holds only Rem and Emilia in his heart for people he truly loves.
It’s a beautiful episode and it is one of my favorite anime episodes ever.
One of my absolute favorite episodes in Re:Zero.
The scene with Rem not only felt like I was watching myself in an anime, pouring out all my negative feeling about myself, word for word.
But it also introduced me to the idea that people see me differently than I view myself. My positive actions *aren't* just a passing thing that doesn't matter. My negative actions don't define me as a person.
I still very much struggle with it, and find it difficult to comprehend people loving and appreciating me, but this scene at least made me aware of this as an idea.
The thing that kills me most about the scene is how Rem sympathises, and holds Subaru in such high regard with only the knowledge she has in the singular timeline she has been apart of.
She has no actual knowledge of all the pain and suffering he has actually faced in other timelines, and when he talks about things like "it kills you AND me", that comes across as a complete figure of speech, and Subaru being kinda dramatic and mega hard on himself.
If you watch the cut videos on YT that show how Return by Death looks to other people, it really becomes clear just how difficult it becomes for characters to see him manage to do the impossible in the most amazing ways, just to suddenly stop and slip into trauma and depression. (Which frankly, is how it feels to suffer from trauma/depression irl sometimes)
You can only imagine the overwhelming sympathy Rem would have in a more 'real-life' setting where she has real knowledge of what burdens Subaru has been suffered.
This just contributes to the ongoing theme of loneliness that Subaru experiences.
Credit goes to @MrTimeattacker. Under Autosaves video, he made a brilliant explanation about the "I love Emilia" Scene (It’s really infuriating why so few people still don't recognize the real significance of this):
A large portion of the point of this arc was that Emilia did not owe Subaru a relationship because he did so much for her, especially when he does stuff that ends up hurting both of them all while Subaru uses Emilia as an excuse for his horrible behaviour. That's not how real relationships or love works. As an extension of that, Subaru does not owe Rem a relationship for all that she's done for him. He does not have to accept the confession if he does not want to. Once again, obligation is not a good basis for a relationship, and if Subaru does not feel the same way, he just doesn't feel the same way.
It's also pretty clear why subaru loves Emilia, even with the anime cutting some Emilia content from the mansion arc.
That being said I think the best end to the discussion on the romantic part of this episode is hypothesizing what if subaru said "i Love you too Rem" it would have been an insult to Rem's feeling, It would have been cheap for what subaru's motivations him wanting to do something for her (even though just to satisfy his self-worth up until now) and ruining the earlier development and most importantly choosing rem was EASY way out. It would absolutely be a betrayal of his character, if he had chosen Rem here out of desperation. (There is an If-Story that goes to show what would have happened if he ran away with Rem.)
Subaru is OUR definition of depressed, and unfortunately that's not something time alone can fix. However, with the right support system and the courage to reach out your hand even when you don't believe you're worth it... someone suffering from depression can actually go on to be an incredible person, stronger and kinder because of the understanding they've gained. It's really not on the nose like other shows, But a cold dread that creeps up on you.
Also, at the end of the day, Both are laughing, and you can't help but betray how you feel about someone.
The way I've always liked to describe the "love confession" aspect of this episode is less as a central point, even though it _seems_ like a large focus of the conversation's final part, and more as one positive tool, among others, that Rem utilizes to try and help Subaru's self-esteem. After all, she says it herself: for every bad thing Subaru can say about himself, she can come up with a counter (which is itself mirrored by Subaru's declaration to Emilia in the final episode).
That's not to say her feelings are untrue, or not important and meaningful, obviously; but I think people get bogged down on the question of "who loves who" a bit too much (partly, to be fair, because of how the episode is structured), while misunderstanding that that aspect is ultimately a rather minor part of the discussion. In other words, they miss the forest for the trees.
To put it in shorter terms: Rem's goal here isn't to start a romantic relationship. She doesn't care about some date with Subaru - or she would've agreed to his proposal - she wants him back on his feet.
@@badwulff Exactly, the goal of this conversation was to get him to break out of his spiral. What i also theorize, is rem telling him that she loves him and his answere to that being that he loves Emilia, was kinda a roundabout way of asking him "Hey, are you back?" And him basically confirming that with "Yes, I am back."
There is a vast chasm between Subaru's feelings for Emilia and Rem's feelings for Subaru.

True, Subaru was doing exactly what Rem wanted him to do - chase for his dream, keep going for the future he wanted. Even if she was not the part of that future. This is a sacrifice in it's purest form.
However, in the novels it's also clearly stated that his feelings for Rem grew way deeper than he could ignore and pretend it's just friendship. Furthermore, Subaru decided to use the same strategy with Emilia.
Giving unconditional love and selfless devotion without asking for anything in return, making your loved one feel the strongest, most special and needed person in the world - just what he felt being next to Rem.
Huge respect for the reaction to the infamous line, especially to Ange! It's indeed *good* that he didn't lead her on. The sooner any potential false hope is dispelled, the better.
When I first watched it, I was mad at Subaru for being "stubborn" but I was misguided. It wasn't stubbornness, one does not choose whom to love. He's a teenager boy with a crush, and I once was one too. It wasn't as simple as trying to be rational about it.
True but also to Ange's point, Subaru could have handled it a lot better. It seemed like he just completed disregarded everything Rem had just said. I think that's what made most people upset with the scene.

I feel like a lot of people miss the point of Subaru's dialogue. It's less admitting what he really is and more so voicing out what he *believes himself to be*. It's not the truth, and just the feelings that have been intensifying inside of him from the start of the series. I mean, that's literally the entire reason for Rem's following monologue, Subaru's soliloquy is his own vision of himself, and from what we've seen through the entire show, not what he really is.

People hates subaru for the most ignorant reasons and they're no different, they might not be as vocal as other moronic reactors but saying subaru doesn't deserve Rem is just absolutely dumb. He literally forgave her for torturing and killing him, he even killed himself for her in the following loop and they're gonna say he doesn't deserve her just because he doesn't reciprocate her feelings as if he's obligated to do that.
That's why she's the MVP!!!!... that's why she's the Goat!!!! The GOAT!!!!!

omg i just realized i had a similar situation in my life, just that i was the rem and my friend was subaru, first she lifted me up and then i supported her, same way rem did, when she was down.
First time i see ppl actually put themselves in Subaru shoes especially first time watching this episode . W Ange moment .
I really like this episode, because it shows how Subaru sees and thinks of himself, and that everything is somewhat of an act from him trying to be the person he presents himself as

when most anime's focus on action this episode was probably one of my most favourite in anime not just this series as the dialogue and voice acting is incredible(including English version) and that makes you so emotional for 2 animated characters. i was fully immersed in their feelings and i actually cried

Betelgeuse's story will be explored in season 2 so you'll be able to confirm or deny any theories you have about him. Rezero was really written very well. There has been hints or allusions that I missed when I first watched it, but when rewatching it really hit different.

People that angry at subaru will likely be someone who leave their partners when they argue and someone offer them a shoulder to cry on. This happen a lot in reality and many people regret it afterwards. This actually the most used ways to take other people partners too.

Carlie's face for the infamous "I love Emilia" moment sent shivers down me spine. For a brief moment, it seemed like all humanity left her body and she was fixing to annihilate Subaru hahaha.
Still bites me everytime I see this scene. I do love that Subaru told Rem instead of leading her on but it's just the way in which he did it that bothers me. It was in complete disregard for her feelings. Whatever the case, he doesn't deserve Rem, at least not yet. Hopefully season 3 pops off and gives me reason to continue this show.
There is actually a side story that covers "what if" Subaru and Rem do end up running away, but it's never adapted in the anime. They end up having two children.

Ange concluded, "Brilliant episode." Exactly. If you guys are like me, that feeling will grow. This is the best dialog scene I have ever scene in any media. And the episode starts from the end of the world. Episode 18 is one of the best shows I have ever seen.

I feel like I can't get past how silly 'I love Emilia' is in he conext its being used. I understand that returning Rem's feelings is the wrong thing to say, and that this conversation should happen at some point;
They were talking about whether Subarao could save anyone, whether he could start over, give up, was worthy of Rem's sympathy. His conflict wasn't about loving Emilia.
An incidental side effect of his regaining faith in himself is hardly the first thing you' d expect him to talk about; especially when it sounds like he's intentionally being an absolute savage. (Coincidentally?)

What I will say after finishing S1 of Re:Zero is that I also really like Emilia as a character. She's a total sweetheart. Sucks to be stuck in a best girl competition against Rem.
