As I’ve mentioned probably a couple of times in your comment box, I’m sticking with the a6000 for at least a while longer and really appreciate you continuously doing reviews and tips relevant also for us a6000-users!
8 months late... Love this lens. I have the black version. No noise on at all. Beautiful bokeh. 50mm (75mm equivalent) is pretty long but great for portraits. Sharp and gorgeous. Some of the best pictures I've ever taken were with this lens. For a5000, a5100, a6000, a6300, definitely get the aps-c version. I owned the FE28 full frame lens with no OSS and shooting in an action situation with low light half of my pictures came out blurry. Also, I really believe that if you're shooting aps-c, you're best served with an aps-c lens. Also, this lens is pretty inexpensive so you can't go wrong.
The oss on mine is dead silent. You might have an issue with yours. I would say that’s one of the best parts of this lens is that it’s so quiet even the autofocus :) 👍🏼
Mine does make some noise. When I hit the shutter button to focus the noise is apparent sometimes, but not always. The OSS is noticeable only in a very quiet environment. I tried one at BestBUY and it did the same thing.
Ive been using the 50mm oss Aps-c version on my a6000 & a6500 I find it a fantastic lens... for my portrait/model work ...all decent reviews comparing the full frame 50 & the aps-c 50 ..all give it the oss - asp-c version...
Me personally it’s a better understanding when you take us through your video comparing lenses. Rather than looking at a chart that I don’t understand. Thank you great videos
I was thoroughly confused as to which lens to choose- FE 55mm 1.8 lens without OSS or e lens with OSS. Though I attempted many a forum to find out about this , I am happy to say you explained it concisely and precisely. Thank you so much. Having a Sony a6000 I know that I will go for the lens with OSS because I have no plans to go for a full frame body.
I have this lens for my A6000 as well as the 55mm/1.8 Zeiss for my A7ii, I love using the 50mm 1.8 OSS, and prefer using it over the Zeiss on my A6000. Sure the Zeiss is sharper and has the poppy Zeiss colours, but the OSS is very colourful as well, very nice creamy Bokeh characteristics (which I prefer over the Zeiss on APS-C), and the close focus distance is a full centimeter better so it's great for getting closeups of smaller objects, to the point I don't feel the need to get a dedicated Macro for my A6000 kit. Also, since my A6000 is a camera I drag with me everywhere, it's alot less worrisome to carry a lens that only set me back $280cad instead of a $1000+ Zeiss in case it gets lost or stolen. I can't praise the 50mm f/1.8 OSS enough, I don't think anyone needs a better 50 if you're just shooting APS-C - it's that good.
The APSC Version is one of my favorite Lenses it is incredible sharp an takes really nice pictures. Until now I had no issues with the stabilization motor, but I don't use the OSS a lot
the reason for better corner detail on fullframe lens, is due to the use of the center of lense only, the sweet spot of the lens, and the apc lens use the corner too
I usually dont event comment on videos, but just wanted to say that you explained it so good! ive got an a6000 but wanna buy a full frame so im just gonna wait and buy the lens after. Thanks
I have that lens for my A6000. Mine has a couple specks of dust inside the lens, but they don't appear in the picture. Yes, the OSS is kinda of noisy. It's a good lens, sharp photos and nice video in low light.
I have fallen in love with the A6500 and don't plan to go full frame with my mirrorless gear. I have full frame photography well covered with my Canon DSLR setup! So I picked up this lens for informal portraiture...
Got it last month 50mm oss for my a6000 as my first lens investment & love it so much...but willing to learn more to open wider possibility with this lens
Hi There, I am using the 50 MM 1.8 OSS lens on a A6000. When I rotate the ring on the lens to zoom in or out nothing happens. How can I magnify the subject on this lens. May be my camera settings are not correct?
I really want to like OSS but I've had several OSS lenses kept getting stuck and stopped working. The kit lens that comes with the a5000 is a 16-50mm OSS. I'd try to turn the camera off and the lens wouldn't return to the kind of storage mode. Just getting stuck about half way out and after several days it just stopped working completely. I've had it happen multiple times now. After awhile it's exhausting spending $200-$300 on lenses that keep failing that Sony won't fix. I really like their non OSS lenses though like the FE 50mm so I think that's probably the next best option especially if I'll eventually go to the a7 series eventually.
Hey dude, great channel I watch it regularly. I like to take photos of graffiti and various street art. From my research this is one of the better, more affordable lenses for this style of photography. Given my interests do you recommend this lens? Thanks!!!!

Great video thanks! Mine 50mm F1.8 OSS does a lot of noise... Very annoying. I contacted the representation in Switzerland and they told me to buy a new one as it is not possible to repair or replace parts.
Mine is quiet, Sold the FE (full frame), which has a loud, slow, hesitant AF. It is sharp but try to focus on someone's face indoors with that, or outdoors with the lens stopped way down. Sony should keep the optics and update it with a better AF motor. With the 50mm OSS of APSC, no complaints, one of the few Sony lenses with the right price and features. AF so much better than the FE version. Just wish they would update it to a less scratch prone finish.
Hello friend, one question, do you recommend the Sony a6000 for long streams, I have a little doubt and fear since I do live streams on twitch and they are long maybe 4 or maybe 6 hours and obviously the camera will be connected to a fake battery connected to the electricity all the time, that's why the reason for my fear when streaming I don't know if the camera overheats they told me that the Lumix G7 doesn't overheat in video and I don't know which one to choose I would appreciate it if you gave me your opinion, I hope see your answers, thanks.
I might be crazy but are you from the Bako area? I noticed from the shots in the video that you might be from the area I grew up....lol I grew up in the 93215 but now live in the SD.
the stabilize noise i think is from your used copy. i had 2 different copies of the 50mm OSS and both never had that noise at all. it was dead silent. i miss it i sold it to help fund my 18-104 f/4 for my 6300. im thinking about picking this up again. i miss it :(
Hummmm. . . just noticed in the video you were comparing 1.8 on the crop sensor and the full frame lens versions. You talked about the blurriness in the corners. This makes sense. I'd say that the full frame will be a better more consistent lens and here is why. With your depth of field when you shoot a flat wall and have the len's level as your focused area you'll lose the focus on those outer edges because it's further way than your center point. Take a string tie it to your tripod then take that string to the center point of your picture then try to move it to the corners of your frame with out moving your measurement on the string.. This will show you the distance difference and therefor show you that those outer edges will be softer focused because of that depth of field.
I know this is an old video, but I bought my 50 Saturday I’ve noticed that the auto focus will not stop. It will focus, then re focus, then focus again all the while I’m waiting to take a shot. But I love the lens as I’m a new photographer. I’m going to try manual focus today, see if I can do any better.
this is a fantastic review, brother. I have this lens and that oss sound doesnt happen to me when I record a video so I think it's your copy that has a problem. Anyways could you have a follow up review of this lens with a proper model to see how excellent it is for portrait shots. we would appreciate it so much. :)
So, IS there performance Degrading when using FULL Frame lenses on a APS-C body? I have heard that there is a performance as far as detail is lessened when using full-frame glass on an APS-C body. Is this a myth? I see in this video you compared a full-frame lens to the APS-C lens. The center's were sharp. So I am confused if you are better off with APS-C lenses or Full Frame Lenses on an APS-C body?! Thoughts? DO you have a Video on this??
@@mike-birks I know. But this is too zoomed in, like an 85mm equivalent! If Sony had like a 16 or 24mm f1.8 or 1.4 with OSS then it'd be golden. I know they have that for full frame but that's way too expensive, APS-C versions would be much cheaper.
Autofokus of sel501.8 is about 30% at moving subjects. chromatic aberration are Extreme at 1.8. In the sun you get red shining borders around the object. If you test it at perfect light and none moving model it is ok.
How loud is the noise you're hearing? I just tried it on mine and I could barely hear anything. I can hear there aperture opening and closing when I turn the camera on and off, and when it's changing focus, but those are barely audible the camera makes a ton more noise when it locks on. If you're hearing anything louder than what you would expect from your other Sony lenses, then maybe there is some damage in that lens.
hey camera guy! So I was trying the back button focus thing on the a6000 and somehow instead of it getting set up on the AEL button i thought is wasnt working then accidentally found it was setup on the dial button, which is fine I guess. Anyway can you go over back button focus and why or why not to use the camera this way? I still dont really understand the advantage or big deal about it other than the camera doesnt have to refocus everytime you hit the shutter button. Is that it? Actually I just set the BBF up to the AEL button, and then set autofocus tracking to the dial button. I'm thinking I kind of like this setup.
I want to use the OSS 50MM lens for music videos, low light is mainly the reason i need this lens for, close up and long distance as you know how music videos are these days, i have the sony 6300 and will be filming in 4k of course, is this lens for me? It will be my first ever lens i will be purchasing on a camera, will i be happy with this lens for music videis in day light and low light, will this do the perfect job comparing to the kit lens for sony a6300 which i purchased 2 days ago but do not agree with low light conditions? Please help
This is my favourite lens that I've bought for my APSC camera, I love how smooth the out of focus areas are but I have a question if you can help me that1cameraguy, is f1.8 on a cropped sensor the FF equivalent of f1.8? It's confusing me :D
F-number is the ratio of the system's focal length to the diameter of the entrance pupil. Which means that any lens opened at 1.8 will let the same amount of light on the sensor, but the FF sensor is bigger so you're gonna have a brighter image. Your answer depends on how cropped is your sensor (sony is x1.5) so 1.8 x 1.5 = 2.7
Want to address couple of things I personally have the A6000 I’m a hobbyist snapper 💫 1 I currently have the 1.8 oss silver and I love it !!!very sharp and crisp snaps. Thant been said I barely notice the vengeance on my lens it might be tour setup or just over used lens that hasn’t been kept in a clean environment also hasn’t been cleaned because I seen your lens and it looks rough man 🍺. I shoot a lot with this lens light and crisp shots 98.7%. It hunts with a breeze to find that sweet spot. Hood lens not that bad nice and tight funnel for that perfect shot. With video I have a AX53 Sony witch is 4K so I can’t really say much on the video on since I shoot Videos every day for work. Keep up the good work enjoy your knowledge.
I've had two copies of this lens and I sure the noise wasn't there on the better copy but there was something on the more used one. After the profile is applied I would so this lens comes close to the 55mm when also used on a crop body. At two or three times the cost you still get value for money with the 55mm so both are excellent choices.
Dear experts, apologies but i am completely new to Sony, planning to get my D6000 for 1080p video purpose soon as well as some hobby portrait shots, just a quick question, if i pick up the APSC 50mm OSS, what focal length am i seeing with my A6000? Pure 50mm or 75mm? Thanks!
Ionut Murgu I sold my D7100 (which is upgraded from the d5300) for the a6000. I do a lot of low light shooting and the a6000 was better than the Nikon. However, it’s not nearly as good as my D750. I’m dying to try the a7iii.
Thank you for that review. Your backyard looks terrible though. There are some beautiful rose fields just east of town, that would make your outdoor background pop. Or orchards of trees just west of town.
I am new to world so please don't get upset if I say something crazy! lol I just bought my Sony A6000 and I want to get a 50mm F1.8 but I am really confused by the difference between DT and FE and OSS and Full Frame. Can someone please tell me what is the best one to get?
Your results are consistant with those lenses. The 50mm crop lens is all around a better lens for the a6000 and has a tony bit more clarity. Dx0mark tests showed that. However, I have to disagree a bit with your reasoning in this video. There is really no point in buying the FE 50mm at all if you have an a6000. Doesn't even matter if you will later upgrade to a full frame or not. Just sell your crop lens and move up to a good full frame lens. If you are going to upgrade to a full frame camera anyway then it stands to reason you are becoming serious about photography so image quality will be more important and you wont be happy with that lens and sell it anyway. Use the money from selling it to go with the Zeiss 55mm 1.8 instead....much better lens!

the reason for better corner detail on fullframe lens, is due to the use of the center of lense only, the sweet spot of the lens, and the apc lens use the corner too
lol , my first lens when i bought a6000 (other than the kit lens that comes with it) .... still loving it for photos

For portrait & landscape, which one better betwen this compare to 35mm f1.8 OSS ?
on a6xxx series is 35mm f1.8 OSS or sigma 30mm f1.4
For portraits you should go with 50mm if you want landscape take 16mm or 12mm

Hey dude, great channel I watch it regularly. I like to take photos of graffiti and various street art. From my research this is one of the better, more affordable lenses for this style of photography. Given my interests do you recommend this lens? Thanks!!!!
You can check if it's parallel by intentionally shooting it angled differently, eliminates the possibility that it's field curvature.
I got both these lenses. My take is these.
The fe version is cheaper but no oss. Its also slower to focus bjt the manual focus ring is a joy to use.. feels like a manual lens.
The apsc version with oss, has problems with CA and the focus ring is crap. Too slow and by the time you have racked focus, youll have lots of rolling shutter jelllo in your footage.
But the af is better like really really good even in my OG sony a7s.
Your answer depends on how cropped is your sensor (sony is x1.5) so 1.8 x 1.5 = 2.7
what model is that lowepro bag?
Want to address couple of things I personally have the A6000 I’m a hobbyist snapper 💫
1 I currently have the 1.8 oss silver and I love it !!!very sharp and crisp snaps.
Keep up the good work enjoy your knowledge.
what is a good 50mm lens for a sony a5100?
I've had two copies of this lens and I sure the noise wasn't there on the better copy but there was something on the more used one.
After the profile is applied I would so this lens comes close to the 55mm when also used on a crop body. At two or three times the cost you still get value for money with the 55mm so both are excellent choices.
Dear experts, apologies but i am completely new to Sony, planning to get my D6000 for 1080p video purpose soon as well as some hobby portrait shots, just a quick question,
if i pick up the APSC 50mm OSS, what focal length am i seeing with my A6000? Pure 50mm or 75mm?
Thanks!
Christopher Wong 75mm for APS-C
Im already buy FE50mm f1.8. So far, i found that lens have a bit hunting on AF.
Heelooooo!!!! Please help me. Sony a6000 or Nikon D5300? Which one is beast for contrast and clarity. ? Thank Youuuuuuu:D :X
Ionut Murgu I sold my D7100 (which is upgraded from the d5300) for the a6000. I do a lot of low light shooting and the a6000 was better than the Nikon. However, it’s not nearly as good as my D750. I’m dying to try the a7iii.
Hi, you said this lens is $200 to $300. It's $348. What's the deal? Thanks.
I am using Sony A6000.. can we use adapter to use Canon lens with less f value.
Yes ofcourse. I do it on my sony with an andoer autofocus adater ef-nex.
Does it work for a5100?
Ilham Khasbullah yes

DEREK ABHI get 50mm
35mm is going to be a lot more handier for any type of street photography
How to record camera display?
please let me know since it it 50 mm lens while using it in a6000 does it become 75 mm lens, and can it zoom or not?
Yes, it's equivalent to 75mm full frame lenses. It's a fixed lens, so it doesn't zoom.
@@waltervanlille2263 tq so much
mine doesnt have that noise
If you had to pick between the two this or the 55/210mm which one is better ?? Plz and thank you
dude i have a5100 and is it good if i use FE 50mm F1.8 full frame? or i better use the OSS?
USED IT FOR FILMING TURNED MY FILM INTO A PROFESSIONAL LOOKING REALLY LIKE 7 YES IT IS A BIT NOISY BUT DONT AFFECT FILMS SOUND 10/10
Thank you for that review. Your backyard looks terrible though. There are some beautiful rose fields just east of town, that would make your outdoor background pop. Or orchards of trees just west of town.
Ronald Quint hmmm I would love to see a video of your backyard and recommendations.
you probably bought a rebranded FE :')
I am new to world so please don't get upset if I say something crazy! lol I just bought my Sony A6000 and I want to get a 50mm F1.8 but I am really confused by the difference between DT and FE and OSS and Full Frame. Can someone please tell me what is the best one to get?
My sel50f18 is ninja quite :)
I do not understand why people tend to talk so much about video quality when we all know that this cameras primarily are for photos, no video!!!!
Love this lens. Only complaint is how it's not wide enough.
THE STABILISATION DOES MAKE A LOT OF NOISE
Mine is silent.
