Two points here:
Guthrie has said that EVERYTHING he does is improvised, and never exactly the same twice. His facility with this genre is dwarfed by the fact that he's THIS ACCOMPLISHED in a very wide range of musical styles.
Guthrie and Bryan, both MONSTERS of their instruments, concur that the most amazing aspect of this trio is that they can keep up with, and even comprehend, Marco's musical ideas and techniques. This is a testament not only to Marco's next-level abilities, but also to the humility of these extraordinary players! 🙏
Hans Zimmer recruited Guthrie for his world tour in 2017. Guthrie has been on many of his soundtracks since. To quote Hans, "Guthrie is as good as it is possible to get"

Marco Minnemann is actually a really good song writer and multi-instrumentalist. He also plays guitar, bass, and keyboards. You also really need to checkout some stuff from his two full-length albums he wrote as a duo with Randy McStine (as McStine & Minnemann). Both albums were written & recorded in their home studios (remotely from each other by sending the song files back and forth), and released in 2020 during the Covid shutdown. Both albums are so great and worth checking out.
I truly wish I could experience how it felt to listen to the Aristocrats live for the first time again.
I saw them live in London 2018-2019ish, and Jesus, they sound every single bit as perfect playing live.
A memory I will cherish forever. Can’t wait for them to come to the UK again, I will literally go anywhere to see these geniuses play.

Anything Guthrie Govan (guitarist) is involved in is worth checking out. The first piece of work that introduced me to this madman was his album "Erotic Cakes." I'd recommend the song "Ner Ner" or "Uncle Skunk," but you can't go wrong with any single song off of that album. He also was the guitarist for Steven Wilson's album, "Hand Cannot Erase" and the song(s) "Home Invasion / Regret #9" is a MUST listen. I'm almost positive the drummer here, Marco Minnemann also did the drums for that Steven Wilson album...and I think him and Guthrie have been involved in a few other of Steven's album as well...so much great content with these guys!!
Yes, he was also on Steven's Raven album from which Bryan checked "Luminol" and the title track.
That solo in Regret #9 gives me fucking chicken skin. Guthrie is a god

Guthrie at his improvisational best is his trade offs with Zak Barrett. Search the band “The Fellowship”. His brother Seth Govan is the bassist in that band.
Glad you got around to checking out The Aristocrats. I’ve seen them live a couple of times, and as well as the phenomenal musicianship which you and other contributors have already mentioned, what I also really like is that they don’t take themselves too seriously and have a great deal of fun during a show.
If you watch the entire Boing… DVD you’ll get a flavour of that, particularly in the encore which is like no other encore you’ve ever seen. Enjoy!

As others have said, you might've recognized Govan's name from his collaborations with Steven Wilson, but he's worked as a musician for a lot of prominent acts/composers. He's one of those rare guys who's so talented he can play whatever comes into his head instantly. There are videos of him improvising guitar sounds to mimic a bird flying overheard, or quoting other pieces of music in the middle of a solo. In this concert during the solo for Bad Asteroid he throws in a bar of the Inspector Gadget theme. I think there's a compilation video out there of him doing this stuff. I've never seen a guitarist that is so virtuosic in every genre he tries his hand at: rock/metal, jazz, country, funk... there's literally nothing he can't play, and his harmonic vocabulary and technical ability are second to none. He's like if Allan Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, and Jeff Beck had a baby.
But that's just Guthrie, and as you can tell from this video Marco is just as talented. As someone else mentioned he was one of the "finalists" to replace Mike Portnoy for Dream Theater, but they wanted more of a time commitment than he was willing to make. Beller I didn't know before finding the band as I never watched Metalocalypse or listened to his band, but he impresses me more and more every time I hone in on the bass. He's capable of just holding down a groove, but I love how he's able to find these pockets in between both Guthrie and Marco going nuts to have his own "colorful" moments where he'll play around with the rhythm or the chord progression/key.
One cool fact about The Aristocrats is that not only do all three members share writing duty, but each have written the same amount of tracks! Every album they've done has 9 tracks and three from each member. Most all of the material from this concert is from their first album (minus one from their second, and one Govan solo track), while Culture Clash covers material from their first and second albums. I'd highly recommend watching the Get It Like That from Culture Clash just to see how radically different it is. Most of the piece is pre-composed (minus the guitar solo), but on the Culture Clash version they go through sections where they basically transform it into different genres.
Sorry for the novel! Very glad you finally got to hear this band and enjoyed them. They don't have a crazy amount of material (four albums, two live DVDs), so there's not a ton to hear if you want to explore them more.

@@CriticalReactions Cool to hear you actually watched the Boing concert! If you ever plan on watching it again you might consider buying it on DVD if only because Steven Wilson actually did the surround sound mix, which obviously isn't available on RUclips. The sound quality isn't quite as good on Culture Clash, probably because it was recorded at a variety of venues, but it's not bad by any means.

From what I've read Bryan Beller wasn't that into performing in the past. He worked for an upstart amp company and demonstrated the product, so naturally during that time he had to develop the chops to play virtually any style to showcase the product. His Facebook page has a long post about it and how the Aristocrats came about.
Bryan Beller has the ability to sound like Jaco at times which is insane.

I still gotta get around to that but I think I'll watch the whole Boing! concert first and then watch the whole Culture Clash one. "Blown away" is exactly what I'm expecting though given this introduction.

Another fun fact...both Marco Minnemann and Guthrie Govan played on Steven Wilson's "The Raven That Refused to Sing" album, and played on the tour for that album. You already heard them when you reacted to Steven Wilson's song "Luminol" a while back.
I've seen them live (also Bryan/Marco with Satriani) and yes they really do sound this good, their music is a revelation.
I think the other live version is more interesting honestly. Also literally everything from the culture clash dvd is perfect, so I'd recommend checking out more from it
They might be one of most talented groups ever created in human history.
The drummer (Marco)used to play in Necrophagist and Obscura among other bands, so he's a world class metal drummer as well as jazz player.
And Guthrie (guitar) is often mentioned among the top guitar players in the world, he's unreal.
So yeah, everyone in this band is not from this world. It's really not fair lol

Amazing band. A personal favorite of mine is “Spanish Eddie” from their most recent album. That one is written by Guthrie if you want to check out some of his writing.
Amazing band, so glad I got to see them here in Stockholm like a month ago. Absolutely mesmerizing!
I saw them 2019, the only band I have heard playing Queen song "Another One Bites The Dust" on rubber ducks. The drummer Marco Minnemann was on the final shortlist when Dream Theater searched a replacement for Mike Portnoy but he eventually refused, wanting to write more and have choices over his career.
Dream Theater got Mike Mangini on mrums instead.
I don't think I have ever clicked on a video in my subs feed so fast before from this channel. This is one of my favorite bands to come out in the 21st century, and as a drummer myself, what can I say about Marco Minnemann except....superb!
Next time you get back to The Aristocrats you need to check out "Blues Fuckers" from the live "Culture Clash" performance (but you MUST watch the video though). Fantastic and hilarious at the same time.

Definitely. There’s a strong Mahavishnu vibe in some of Guthrie’s fret work, particularly the fast picking. Saw these guys live just before Covid hit. Superb musicians.
Critical, you need to check out Guthrie play Englishman in new york with Zak Barrett, it's a really fun one. It's just Guthrie with looper and Zak with his Sax and it's way more fun than 2 guys should be able to make it.
"Extreme Drumming" and "4 Independent (limbs)" are instructional DVDs from Marco Minnemann. He played from Necrophagist (Technical Death Metal) over jazz fusion, up to pop (Nena). One of my favorite drummers if all times.
This is really old....it is good for sure. They have some newer and really crazy things to offer now.
Amazing song, but the culture clash version is on a whole different level.
Always heard of these guys and was a fan of each members’ other work but never heard them together as The Aristocrats. This is about as impressive as I imagined it’d be given their individual talents. Looks like I’ll finally have to dive into their music.
As for the guitarist’s name sounding familiar, you may be thinking of Woody Guthrie who was also a guitarist.
Any thing they do simply got taste, it's not simply adding showpieces to another, it makes sense - and moreover: a smile on everyone's face.

Bryan Beller got his start playing bass for Mike Keneally back in the 90s. Mike's albums, Boil That Dust Speck, Sluggo, Dancing, Dog, and Scambot 1 & 2 all contain phenomenal progressive music and great songwriting. Check 'em out!

I knew what this was gonna offer, but I didn't know that you would be coming straight outa that jazzy joy-sparker. This would be AT LEAST as much "jazz" as that really nice Kamasi Washington track.

Thanks, I forgot to look into this. I was thinking of Jim Guthrie. And yeah, this is a great followup to both Kamasi's track and joy sparkers as a whole.
It is possible (not sure how viable) to hit the bass string with the nail on the backstroke. If he is doing that, he is insane. But we already know they are all insane.

That's awesome! I felt there were some improvised sections but I wouldn't have guessed a percentage as high as 50%.

I totally understand where you're coming from but I still can't get over how tickled i am by you saying Guthrie Govan and Marco Minneman "appear" to be talented. Guthrie is probably the greatest (living) guitarist who can play basically any style, but for me the most special thing about him is his mastery of literally every playing technique and his RIDICULOUS precision with both hands (plus his feel - he's not pure technique, he has a *sound* that is unmistakably his). Marco is an absolute legend as well though I'm not a drummer so I have a hard time appreciating him on the same level - but he's played with a LOT of my favorite bands/musicians and I have tons and tons of respect for his style and sound and showmanship.
