YAY keep going Sassafras! HOLY COW 8:48 a Sasquatch walks into frame. If I were to make up my own trail nickname for you it would be Jessafras or Sassafrasquatch or Jessafrasquatch. OK I'm going back to work - miss you! CP
Good to see you guys formed a tramily. That will help keep that Spirit Meter high. Love the name. I wonder how long it will take for them to start calling you Sassy. Stay safe and happy trails.
Sassafras is a wonderful trail name! I climbed the Mountain in NC/SC last year on the Foothills trail. It is also one of my favorite plants to smell when hiking. Crush a few sassafras leaves in your hands and sniff, it smells kind of lemony and always makes me feel good.
It's so funny and a bit charming to watch these early videos ( because I'm hiking this section later this month) and seeing your tramily come together since I follow y'all on and off 'to Mama K. Congrats.
Nice trail name indeed. Sassafras Mountain in NC is also on the state line with SC, and is the summit of SC. I've been there a couple times. The Foothills Trail goes through there. It's considered a great prep trail for the AT. Happy Trails Sassafras!
@@JessHikesTrails it's a 76 mile hike that has many waterfalls and views through the upstate of South Carolina almost exclusively with a very small part that crosses into NC. I'm sure you would really enjoy it.
For the last several years, I’ve followed someone as they hike the AT, so I am so glad I found your channel, Day 18, and I just now watched days 17 and 16. I’ll go back to watch days 1 to 15, and am hoping I’ll find more information about the “mind, body, spirit,” assessment you do. I’d like to give it a try. I’ve never hiked a long trail before, but I’ve done bits and pieces of the AT as day hikes and bits and pieces of the PCT as day hikes and some multi-day hikes. I live on the west coast. By the way, I am 74. My very first hike ever was in the GSMNP while on a road trip back in my 20s. It was like being born again and I spent the next almost-50 years hiking. My hiking days are over now due to a health issue that has hobbled me, so I am going to hike vicariously through you and some others. I wish you the best, and please always be safe.

Sassafras is a good name. You likely know that there is a tree by the same name. It tends to grow in well drained soil, forms its own clonal colony by sending out root sprouts and all parts of the tree are “aromatic and spicy”. You’ll have to decide if the last part of that description fits you 😊. You can make a tea by boiling the bark of the roots for about 15 minutes. It has other medicinal properties too. Good trail name.
Sassafras is a great trail name! Fun seeing this section. We have a basecamp on Wesser Creek so we’re close to the fire tower and Rufus Morgan shelter. Enjoy those mornings. So pretty!
Sassafras- not bad- nice to wake up to your post to start my day- after climbing back into bed after a cold bath a few hours ago. So glad to be following and seeing you among the trail family- you’re all great folks- best wishes my good friend! 🏃♀️🌿🧘🏼🙏
Originally, Root Beer came from the roots of the sassafras tree, no longer, has been banned by FDA because causes health issues. Last year a young woman called be "Old School", I am 69 and my pack was older than her and I was only one using a compass (every time I get off trail I turn the bezel and set the compass heading so return direction is 180 degrees from that setting), so I am keeping the trailname "Old School", seems to fit my age and methods.
