Because of your video I was able to replace the cabin air filter in my '99 beetle last week. The removal of the first section of the dashboard was hard and took a while. I didn't want to scratch or break it. I also replaced the padding and fabric under the plastic cover over the filter. The old one was filthy and disintegrated like falling snow. Even though I had to buy a torx t20 stubby driver and the filter I still saved $108 from what the mechanic quoted me. Today I changed the air filter after watching your video. I fought getting the maf sensor off but I eventually won without breaking it :). Your videos are the best! Clear instructions, easy to follow and up close video. By the way, I'm a 70yr old woman so if I can do it anyone can. Even if VW makes everything ridiculously complex and complicated.

I already purchased a new filter earlier but my next one will be from FilterHeads.

Christopher, We COMPLETELY agree that the Beetle design is needlessly complicated! Our opinion is that the cabin filter was an afterthought in the design of this vehicle. If you drive in an area that has very clean air (low dust and pollen), you can go several years without having any problem with the filter clogging up. Eventually, the filter will have trapped so much dust that it becomes overly restrictive.
I was able to change my cabin air filter on my own thanks to watching video on how to change 2002 VW Beetle cabin air filter video. I probably saved $100 or more.
Apparently VW installed a “permanent” cabin air filter in their 2007 New Beetle. Other than cleaning out the leaves, etc in that space you will not be able to remove the 7” X 6” X 2” domed black plastic box. It would be nice if VW would make that clear or the several videos on filter replacement pointed this out. Further there is NO replacement part listed for this domed black plastic box.
I think you are right. In my 2007 convertible there is an only sort of smaller filter mounted to the bottom. By the way, there are soooo many leaves inside the compartment!!
True enough. In my 2009 bug there is no replacement filter. The video was good in that I had to get under the dash anyway to clean it all out. But true enough, there is no filter
For reference, This part is the "cabin air filter case" PN 1JM819098. It can be removed and cleaned by removing the two plastic nuts/ washers on the driver's and passenger's side of the filter case. It was quite a surprise that there wasn't a pleated filter in there. Looks like they want three bills for it.
Anyone else get extreme anxiety when the new filter was put in without removing the solitary leaf that was sitting inside the fliter cavity? lmao OCD is REAL and it's no picnic! 😹 In all seriousness, thank you for the helpful video. I'm changing my mom's cabin filter today on her '01 NB. Piece of cake, after watching your video! ❤
@@filterheads that's EXACTLY what I'm doing this very moment! The amount of leaves in this '01 was ridiculous. 😩 Being the OCD creature I am tho, I simply could not just stop with cleaning the immediate area but am vacuuming out the whole intake plenum (within reach of my hose) and the whole dash under-area. Me n my OCD! 😹 thanks again!
I replaced the climate control module yesterday in my daughter's beetle. i did not realize how close I was to the cabin air filter. I will change it today.

I have a Beetle and a Dodge Caliber. The Caliber cabin filter can be done under 5 minutes. I'm disappointed of VW. Many routine maintenance on the Beetle is ridiculous complicated compared to the Dodge Caliber.
I followed these steps but I dont have a filter where one should be. I have a 2.5 2007 beetle. There isn't even a plenum housing under the hood for one.
@@filterheads I watched several of these videos and one thing i noticed was that when the dash cover was taken off and set to the side, no one unplugged a speaker, I had to unplug a dash speaker before completely setting the cover aside. WHY is this needlessly complicated and how often should the cabin filter be replaced? I have an '05 New Beetle and the air flow through the car seems fine and I have not replaced the cabin filter since I've purchased the vehicle new in '04.

Mine had never been done. It was full of leaves. I took out leaves by the handful, and then vacuumed the hell out of it before I finally pulled the utterly plugged filter. It used to pass some air, now it blows like a new restroom hand dryer. VERY worth it.
i looked this video up because my friend has an 03 Beetle that the a/c is not really working it comes on and off so I was thinking perhaps its because it hasn't been changed since the car was purchased back in 03 and I wanted to try this before I buy R134 recharge
