My lawyer's assistant still uses DOS for this exact reason. She has her old 80s computer running DOS for all the files she works on and a new computer for the internet research she needs to do. She gets a surprising amount of work done on that old thing.
You know whats even better than MS Dos? Not turning your pc on at all. Tired of waiting 8 seconds for your PC to boot? just use a pen and paper instead and you can access it in less time for great efficiency. MS Dos can't hope to compete with no computer at all, it has no operating system and nothing running and therefore it is faster and more efficient.
Well, the Commodore 1571/1572 *could* read MS-DOS floppies, though the reverse was not true of DOS 5.25" drives, due to the variable speed writing Commodore used... I like that you had one of these just lying around.
Nice work with the close ups! I don't think I ever saw you do them like this before, and it really added to the back and forth between Paul and Kathleen. :)
It's funny how George R R Martin has now said he uses DOS for exactly these reasons. He doesn't want any distractions or autocorrect messing up his writing.
@@DimT670 Look man, I made this comment over half a decade ago. We were all naive back then and thought Game of Thrones was going to end well on TV and have at least one more book out by now. Mistakes have been made
Greetings from PAX East, wish you were here. (Though I suppose you have a passable excuse.) For what it's worth, you can browse TVTropes form DOS; a port of Lynx, a text mode browser, is available. It's probably less conspicuous, too.
I thought that when he asked whats her idea (after he signed the NDA) she would said: "Make my nexttobeformer boss sign a transfer of his goods to me thinking its an NDA"
Ah yes, the time that MS DOS was still a huge part of Windows 95. In a recovery center near me they even had 4Dos. And later during an internship there was a donation of a 486 - I messed around with that thing quite much....
Not to mention that dos has half the OSI reference model of networking not included, windows 3.1 isn't massively hard to install, you can run text based browsers from msdos, ms dos does actually have mouse support, and with the right programs you can actually load images
Apple keyboard come with Control and Alt (though it's called option.) The reverse is when you can potentially have problems since most keyboards don't have the command key.
I was going to say, how about FreeDOS? But I think the better solution is for the company to invest in Raspberry Pis and give them to employees without admin access or non-productivity programs.
Ah yes, LRR's "The New Old Thing", a video about the development of Microsoft DOS, as opposed to Raymond Chen's "The Old New Thing" which is a book on the development of Microsoft Windows.
That was BRILLIANT! You know I must admit, there are a lot of things I can do faster using the command prompt (MS-DOS) rather than using the WIndows GUI.
True, but there are much more modern command prompt oriented operating systems. MS-Dos is fast, but it hasn't been maintained, unlike QNX, Minix, Linux, or *BSD. (All of these have command line, in addition to optional gui.) You can even run DOS programs with these OSes. They can also be quite light weight as well. QNX can run off a single 1.44mb floppy. Linux regularly runs on systems with less than 4 megabytes of storage. And they all support hard drives larger than 128gig. Though, I do have fond memories of running a BBS on MSDos + Desqview, and fonder memories of switching to OS/2 instead.
This is ridiculous, ms dos would never be compatible with modern hardware. When they wrote it no one ever thought you could have a gigabyte of ram, Or a gigahertz of cpu power.
Getting kinda tired of hearing these computer history will recycle stories, would like more Ideas for actual futuristic computer like a hologram then this same story.
She makes a surprisingly compelling argument.
well except that dos is still bad for productivity

@@TheCaptaineustass One could say you were distracted by the internet. Wouldn't have happened if you were using MS DOS!
2024 here. Ten years later, and the argument is still compelling. If it's good enough for George RR Martin, It's good enough for me!
MS-DOS also has Commander Keen, can't go wrong with that.

***** What Linux are you talking about?
You know, you probably COULD make money selling DOS to hipsters....
Not a LOT of money, but , y'know, some.
Hipsters pay like $6 per cop of coffee, I think you could clean them out.
The Freewrite Traveller does cost only $450. AFAIK it doesn't do spreadsheets or DOS programs, it's a low feature word processor.

So... I just did a stream of MS-DOS from a dedicated DOS PC, through a capture card installed on Windows 10.
Unfortunately, Arch Linux already exists and is free :p
