This is pretty typical fighting game mechanics. You can't just translate that into an open world. The moves are only balanced if the battle is in a confined space.

So make it an open world game, but make combat limited to a certain area that way you would in a fight game. Honestly why hasn't anybody done something like that? Make a quality fighting game like Tekken, Street Fighter or Smash and then add onto that a whole RPG open world game, just like any typical tactical RPG just instead of going into turn-based battles in an encounter, start a fighting game style battle. You could get exp each time you use a specific move, thus leveling up moves... or you could just get exp for the fight, and then unlock new combos with experience... there could be different skill trees that make different fighting styles... one could come up with as many skill trees as there are different characters in a fighting game.. with pokemon it would all be even simpler than that. Somebody's gotta get on it. Tons of games are at least that complex to make these days.
I think with most of the anime fighting games that are currently out this would draw in more people with a large circular battle field instead of a linear plane. Also adding 3D movement would really add to the experience.

If I have, it was really temporary before I got rid of them again. Said that, I will play when over at a friends house. I'm a big fan of Fifa and have played other games like COD very well. I will not put games like GTA into my head because it will be game over for me in life if I decide to go and pick that up. Sure I want to play, but I'd be giving up my life to play that game from beginning to end. I just recently got back into Pokemon and found my cards hidden away in storage, so maybe it's a bit extra on the nostalgic side for me. Regardless, it comes down to your taste and opinion. Alright, I'm not a pokemon fan tbh, but I used to watch the show back in the early 2000's. From time to time I do play the video games. I remember pokemon stadium on the Nintendo 64 being my first time and I loved since it was different to the classic rpg style they had going on for so long on handheld consoles. I got tired of playing pokemon and I wasn't that much of a fan to begin with . BUT WTF THIS LOOKS GREAT, WHY DID IT TAKE THEM SO LONG TO DO THIS. Honestly if the next pokemon game has this type of fighting system and the pokemon hunting and 3d exploration from the recent ds titles WE COULD HAVE A GREAT POKEMON GAME.
If they made the arenas bigger like in DBZ fighting games, were in some arenas flying types have the advantage and grass types have the advantage in forests and so forth, that would make the game really awesome. Right now from the gameplay it looks like a simple fighting game with pretty normal mechanics and controls, wish they would go beyond that.

If they made the arenas bigger like in DBZ fighting games, were in some arenas flying types have the advantage and grass types have the advantage in forests and so forth, that would make the game really awesome. Right now from the gameplay it looks like a simple fighting game with pretty normal mechanics and controls, wish they would go beyond that.
