    I absolutely loved Carmelo!
I’m still “young” (in my 20’s)- growing up, I was bullied to the point of having to fight for my own. I was never encouraged by anyone, including immediate family who’d be considered a “support system”- I didn’t care about anything or anyone and it showed. I’d been expelled from school and was considered a lost cause. Having someone like him around would have been amazing.
I’m grateful that I was able to turn things around because a lot of young people who faced similar challenges don’t. I try to be the best person I can be to others, and I always like talking to people younger than me. We need more people like Carmelo around.

I was touched to see that Mr. Alvarez cared to see the kids have an outlet. I'm a 57 year young lady and I go by Catlady Redd here in Muncie Indiana, and I just wanted to let you know I'm so proud of these (adult) kids to show him how appreciative they are of him!! What an inspiring story dedicated to an inspiring man!!

Carmelo Alvarez, I was about 10 years old when RADIOTRON was around. I had only wished you had met my Mom. She would have helped support your calling. My brother and sister were always hanging out there every Friday night. You brought hope to my brother the most. For the first time he found himself. My Mom and saw him so happy to see him exoress himself throught Pop and breakdancing. We were 8 of us with a single Mom. Financially it was very hard to put us in programs to stay focused and stay out of trouble. Once Radiation was demolished, my brother slowly went downlhill, but I seen a MIRACLE in my brothers life. I seen joy, hope, and purpose in carry a cardboard with his guy friends down on Alvarado street near MacArthur's Park. to battle with other yound kids. My brother is still alive but I felt his wings were taken too soon. He needed more time to be inspired and have a mentor as yourself. God bless you.
I'd like to build a place like RADIOTRON in L.A. . Connect with me. Our youth need stimulation, encouragement, and mentors to bring out their talents and the best out of them. Jeremiah 29:11

Fabulous tribute. I'm always happy when I see people get the respect and notoriety they deserve before they die...that's when it means the most.

I'm old now..but it seems that the young ones do not have a world as people my age had.. Opportunities are there, but they've morphed into something totally different. Many young don't seem to have any 'direction'. They lose hope..and when hope is lost, loss of respect for oneself and others follows. I like to hear about positive things and ideas..maybe more people who can make a difference will see this.

I don't know what you've been saying, but the idea that young people don't have respect and priorities is a myth created by old ageism. we have a lot of young people protesting police brutality, how are lawmakers aren't doing anything about school shootings, and climate change. You're playing yourself short if you think that children don't have respect. It's just that we don't give them a chance because we claim they lack experience. But there are some things that you don't need experience to care about. and in an individual setting, I find that youth respect people that are willing to give them a chance. Let them pick their own path instead of trying to make one for them.

I can really resonate with what you said. I am trying to figure out what caused this. There are many wonderful smart kids out there, but society as a whole is failing them. We must have done something very wrong. I don't see any spark in kids today, instead they are lost in their phones scrolling, living for what comes today. They don't dream big for a better future, or have long-term goals to do something with their lives. And it's not their fault. We don't give them choices; parents, schools, I feel that we are all failing them.

The great rapper Myka 9 shouts this man out in his book ‘My Kaleidoscope.’ He said that, whenever he sees him, he thanks him for saving his life.

there are a lot of efforts like this though. Philando Castile was an effort for this in Minneapolis, before he got shot by the police. there are a lot of people in places like Chicago and Detroit that are trying to keep you out of jail and off the streets as well. Barack Hussein Obama was a Nobel Peace prize nominee because of his efforts that he put forth while he was the mayor of governor for the programs that he put in place for youth programs.
anyone who's willing to help our youth and give them a chance, and let them pick their own path deserves an award, because there's not nearly enough people out there like that! we have long since needed to abandon the idea that education and livelihood is a one-size-fits-all mechanism, when it clearly isn't.
