    I'm pleasantly surprised to see that you placed Oblivion above Skyrim. Oblivion is easily my favorite Bethesda-developed game, and I think a large part of that comes down to its side quests. That game has so many fun and memorable side quests -- not even factoring in the fantastic Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild questlines -- and I wish more games followed its example on that front. The only thing keeping it from being my favorite game of 2006 is Ys Origin's existence.

    • @Dennis-nc3vw
      @Dennis-nc3vw 10 месяцев назад +3

      My problem with Oblivion is it was so railroaded. You had no choices in how you went about quests or dialogue most of the time, and when you had choices, there were no consequences. It's a lot of fun the first time through, but it feels like I could never play it again. Skyrim is something I could play again and again.

    • @rpgfan1187
      @rpgfan1187 10 месяцев назад +3

      @@Dennis-nc3vw I can see your point there. Oblivion is still an incredibly flawed game, with the tedious main quest-line, terrible leveling system, and relatively generic setting being some of my personal gripes with it. I do think the side-quests are the strongest aspect of the game, though, and that's what raises it well above Skyrim for me. While I enjoyed Skyrim, I personally found it a bit too watered-down (even compared to Oblivion, which was already very stream-lined), and I felt like the quest-lines were generally weaker than Oblivion's. Granted, Skyrim had the better main-quest, but that's not saying very much since Oblivion's sucked.
      One of my biggest issues with a lot of Bethesda games is that, despite having massive worlds to explore, they tend to feel rather shallow. Most of the characters are pretty flat, the stories can be hit-or-miss, and, of course, there are bugs aplenty. I definitely prefer the likes of Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, and Planescape: Torment by a pretty significant margin over Bethesda's games for these very reasons.

    • @Dennis-nc3vw
      @Dennis-nc3vw 10 месяцев назад +2

      My biggest issue with oblivion that kinda killed it for me, though mods might fix it, is that it's pretty much got the worst loot system in any bethesda game. Only thing it does good is your able to find enchanted equipment that does more then cast X like everything in morrowind, but you just never find anything good exploring random caves or anything, or even gates. 99% of the good items I ever found were from two dungeons that I just repeated over and over. Kinda killed some of the fun of exploring to find a cave with a few chests and monsters but nothing else.

      I don't get why people gush over Oblivion so much. I enjoyed the game immensely the first playthrough, but was it even an RPG? You had no virtually no choices (outside the Dark Brotherhood questline) and when you did, there were no consequences. What drove me up the wall is when they'd railroad you into a certain path, and then an NPC would criticize you for taking that path (like when you're forced to go into that really obvious trap for the Mages Guild). It feels like one of those games you really had to leave your brain at the door to enjoy.

    I always feel like I'm the uncommon factor here, but when it comes to Skyrim, it would be ranked much further down the list. I don't HATE Skyrim, but I still remember, I played through the entire game once, doing most of the major faction storylines. I beat the game, beat the Dawnguard expansion, and then about halfway through the Dragonborn DLC, I just stopped playing it. A few years later I redownloaded the game, and after an hour I uninstalled it again. I'm genuinely not sure WHY, but I am simply unable to play Skyrim again. I get bored so quickly, and the stories all felt half finished to me. I completely understand WHY people like it, but of the three Bethesda Elder Scrolls games, it's my least favorite. Oblivion is a few steps ahead of it, while Morrowind would have been my number one pick on this list.
    I dunno. Maybe my brain is dumb, but yeah. Never particularly liked Skyrim more than just 'Eh, it's alright'.

    It's impressive that 76 is somehow better than the racing games that have nothing, that must have been painfully dull
    Edit: so if there was a game I'd recommend from Bethesda, its oblivion or skyrim. Skyrim is a little overwhelming considering they keep remaking/porting it every single day, it's got re4 staying magic, however I can say oblivion is instantly better because unlike skyrim, it actually teaches you _every single gameplay mechanic and spells in a natural training environment_

      Fallout 3 was simply amazing and revolutionary for its' time. Visual storytelling, the amount of details, level design, art design, atmosphere, soundtrack and many more elements are simply great. Just because New Vegas surpassed it in many ways doesn't make fallout 3 a bad or even mediocre game.
      Morrowind was also outstanding when it released, but it has aged way worse. In terms of gameplay, it doesn't hold up today at all. Nowadays, vanilla Morrowind feels and plays extremely tedious, lifeless, barren and clunky. And I'm saying this as a fan of this game!
      The only two things in which it still holds up are lore and wordbuilding, which were the best Bethesda has ever done.

    I played Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, Oblivion, and Starfield. While I loved them all, Skyrim was definitely at the top and Oblivion was definitely at the bottom. Oh wait, actually Morrowind is. But I don't know if it should even count because I played that for like two hours before giving up. The setting is amazing, but I don't understand how anyone could endure those gameplay mechanics.

      Actually maybe Starfield is at the bottom. I don't know. Oblivion is a hard one to rate because it was my first open world game and I don't know how much that biased me. It's something that was a magical experience the first time but I can't imagine playing again, unlike every other game on the list.

    I'm sorry but while I loved Oblivion, it's overrated asf. You really, really had to leave your brain at the door to enjoy it. The amount of railroading in dialogue and quest structure was just incredible. You had no choices to make and when you made choices, they had no consequences. For example, if you chose to play as an Argonian, the necromancer in Cheydinhal will still try to drown you. They let you enter a name for your character, but the Black Horse Courier will still refer to you as an "unnamed hero". How lazy is that?
    What REALLY ticked me off is when the game forced you down a certain path, and then had NPCs scold you for taking that path. For example, when an obvious trap is set for your retrieving a book for the Mages Guild and that the count calls you an idiot for falling for it, or when Martin announces his plans to lead the battle at Bruma, and all you can say is "Sure, if you say so, my liege." Then he says something like "I need your judgements, friend, not your compliance." Just thinking about it now ticks me off.

    I HONESTLY think that current 76, while it can be a really long grindy slog, it should at least be above the cheaply made, overpriced "VR" games that ranked higher than it.i get that 76 was UNGODLY bad on release, but at current, it's better and playable for a month or so (unlike the VR games that are just Skyrim/FO4 but you need an overly expensive headset for). Shame about them selling you unlimited space for junk and crafting materials for 13$ a month. Still has more value than a lot of sub services though *coughgtavcough*.

    Hoping elder scrolls 6 utilizes AI in their NPCs and quests for dynamic and unique interactions that feel like real life people. I’m hoping this is why Xbox/microsoft bought and invested in an AI company and openAI (bought one a few months ago and partnered with openAI a couple years ago). Seems like Microsoft in its entirety are going more of an AI route with their “co-pilot”. Hopefully we see big innovation for the next elder scrolls

    • @metalheadforlife8928
      @metalheadforlife8928 8 месяцев назад

      It began development quite a while ago, I doubt they intended or wrote with AI in mind when they started the project. Plus, AI is relatively unpredictable, even though its amazing and ive seen AI implemented into skyrim, its harder to define a genuinely real feeling character with alot of nuance. Well, AI or not, dont have alot of faith in the next elderscrolls game. I think all the original developers for skyrim have all left the company. Its not the idea that makes the game good, not the ip, but the developers, they done left. I heard this from developers talking about their work on skyrim, of course bethesda wouldnt announce this, unless it was a lead designer or something. So cross your fingers but chances are, they are gonna increase the scope, take more risks which dont leave them nearly enough time to fully flesh the game out. Maybe they'll listen to feedback on starfield. However, to churn out a pile of crap like that, I doubt even with knowledge of how to make a good game, that they'll still screw up. Pronouns in the next elderscrolls like starfield, the lusty trans lizard, a quest based on bisexual curiosity, brace yourselfs for another dogturd, injecting our fantasy game with real world bs to apeal to half of half of a percent of our population🤣

    I would have to put Starfield towards the bottom as it feels like a medium sized game spread over too vast an area. Most moons have copy and paste locations (like Mass Effect 1 did) and it just feels so soulless.
    It has potential to become a great series but the first game is just low on any meaningful content. Elder Scrolls and Fallout had worlds I wanted to go back to but Starfield doesn’t.

    Fallout 4 is their best game.
    Great combat, lame main story, but at least you are no longer the hero like in skyrin. Great side quests, great graphics even without mods, interesting perk system, interesting weapon upgrades and the best thing? All the lore around.
    When you enter a random location in skyim or oblivion, you find bunch of enemies, traps, loot and some static objects like tents, stools ect. Its good enough if you just want to murder enemies without a reason, but there is no lore unless you accept a quest.
    In fallout 4 most location are a part of world building. When you enter somewhere, it doesnt just tell you the story of what enemies are there, it also tells you the story about what was before the war.
    You enter a school and see a pink ghouls. Later on you find out they had done experiments on kids for money. You enter a church and see skeletons of people in their original clothes in holding their child´s hand. You enter a production building and find how the product was originaly created, you find worker´s entries in terminals. You can read their complaints about job.... You can get immersed so much without even doing a quest.
    Thats why fallout 4 is the best for me.

    Hey Will, if you do countdowns again, I have an idea you might like...
    Remember when I suggested "Games that Have One Fatal Flaw"? Well, at the time I was actually referring to games that had a simple change during development and that butchered them.
    ...
    So what about games that got ruined by a development mistake?
    As an example, look at the PC port of *Hogs of War.*
    Did you know that that version of the game is actually an earlier beta build?
    What happened was one of the dev's computers blue-screen-of-deathed on them and they lost the progress they had been working on, reverting the game back to an earlier state.
    Just compare reviews of the game on Steam (which is hilarious a direct port of that EARLY build error and not the patched version that they did release!) to the PS1 port and it is night and day!
    Or how about *Gran Turismo 2* where, because data was not removed from the game late on in development, early NTSC versions are impossible to get 100% on and have misaligned AI opponents to certain events. It was so bad in fact that they had to issue a recall and released a 1.1 version.
    I think this makes GT2 in effect one of the first console games to effectively be patched. It's an interesting rabbit hole to go down and explore, certainly.
