You are honestly the most underrated instructor on RUclips. You make it so simple without making the audience have to learn all the crazy “golf talk” that most people don’t know
Let’s just call this the greatest golf instruction video in the history of mankind. This drill clears up so much: 1.) shows the clueless among us (my hand is raised) what the path of the club should be; 2.) Cures early extension; 3.) Hints at feels like Hogan’s two-handed basketball pass or skimming a rock. 1 billion thumbs up!
This tip has changed my thought processes on golf dramatically by eliminating completely my previous ideas on how to initiate the backswing specifically . So much simpler.
I have been struggling for a while to fully undrtstand and master side-bend. This is the best description I have seen and it suddenly all makes sense. I love the RED, white and blue core image!
Glad to hear that, Peter! Here's more on side bend that might help! ruclips.net/video/7pbkEuD0NiE/видео.html ruclips.net/video/E_C3K2E3IY0/видео.html ruclips.net/video/CEsxQyxMM_w/видео.html ruclips.net/video/TIDfZFdNW_0/видео.html
I discovered this as a feel in my swing the other day and i was killing the ball for the first time in years. I watched this video to see why and it makes total sense. You maintain your posture so much better, the legs are strong and you turn naturally rather than it being a forced swing or over rotation. This will now be my warm up drill for ever and a day! Cheers
Excellent Video and swing thoughts to be used while swinging. Red to white on backswing and blue to white on downswing. It has really helped me maintain body angles, decreased early extentsion and helped clear my left hip back and open at impact. also steepend my shoulder plane on the backswing, all my longterm swing problems with those simple thoughts applied with few swing thoughts. It has also helped me start the ball to the right of the target line. Kym Australia
I would agree that once you get your wrist angles & clubface under control, this is absolutely the best & simplest part of the 'swing' to zone in on for better compression and quality of strike. It also as a byproduct, reduces any over-backswing, which keeps your width, because you stop your backswing once your left side gets there, and then you can really concentrate on getting your right ribcage, with Right Side Bend, to the ball at impact. I've had my absolute best days at the range thinking only of this - it's almost my magic feeling when I pure the ball.
Played today I found better result if I went slightly past my rib cage and felt like a light coming out of the side of the back. Hit some incredible shots with that extra turn in the back swing
Even though this is an older thread, I had to comment. Following back surgery and time off from golf, I've been struggling with early extension and shanking the ball (something that I have never had trouble with in the past). Using a core driven swing and this rib cage feel throughout the entire swing has helped dramatically. Specifically, maintaining the same distance from ball throughout the swing keeps my glutes back and out of the way. No more shanks and solid compression on the center of the club face. For me, I must make certain to continue to turn to the end of my swing or I run the risk of disconnection between body and arms and here come the shanks again. Also, for me, driving the left hip a bit on the downswing makes for better compression and better (higher) ball flight. I think this "drive" feel with the left hip is simply helping me get weight to left side and subsequently helping clear that left hip out of the way for the right side to come through. If I do my part (which is to maintain core tension and posture), I have freedom to swing/rotate freely through impact. Excellent swing thought Eric!!! I've been working on this for at least a year and finally have something I can count on. Also, for me, a core swing is much less stressful on my lower back because I'm protecting my back with core muscles contracting, particularly when absorbing the finish of the swing. Well done!!!
Tried some shots with this today. It really is great. I already knew in my head that it's what one needs to do - pivot/rotate/tilt in posture. But this feel really brings it home to the body as well! Thanks very much, Sir!
Great great video. I've always had trouble with shoulder plane and hip turn, as they seem to be able to move more independently and I always am not sure about how to get them in just the right position. Focusing on the rib cage makes it easier to reference as the ribs can't really move independently to the rest of your torso or body. Then I can really turn through more freely than being frozen or slowing down in the downswing in trying to maintain certain positions with my shoulder and hips.
@@CogornoGolf hi Eric. Does this also help with clearing the hips or rotating the hips? I got into my golf posture and put my hands on my core, just about my core area, and tried to rotate my my ribs like you talked about your video. It felt like that this movement kind of felt like this was engaging my hips better by moving my core within the swing. Please let me know if I’m wrong. Thank you
I extremely under looked this I’m excited to try it and it make complete sense it also keeps your turn in sync it also looks like tighter turn builds torque
I am under the weather now so cannot play. But I also cannot wait to get to the course to try this ribcage/core feel. I've been as low as 0.6 and as high as 8 because I just do not have a consistent swing and when I play very well for a while and think it'll be there forever...well you all know what that's about. My biggest problem is that my divots look very good, the swing is from the inside, good path, but the ball starts left and draws even more. My lower body just cannot keep ahead of my hands. I've tried so many drills to implement the lower body but for some reason my brain doesn't connect so easily to know where my abs or my hips are in space and I can't seem to will those body parts to rotate just before the top of my backswing. I can do it well at slow motion speeds but not even remotely close at game speed. I think I can feel where my ribcage is and orient that ribcage the way you're describing in your video. Eric take a bow on this one, you hit it out of the park.
Played today with that feeling but I went a bit further and felt like a light was coming out of the side of my back. Had some brilliant hits with this feeling.. Thanks
when i get it right there's a different sound when the ball is hit, like more of a click instead of a thud, thnx this really helped and is just what i needed.

@11:54 I DO feel like i go down too much but i have to or my girl will leave me!🤣🤦🏽♂️ but in all seriousness between you and Tom saguto my swing is getting dialed!!
This is very Good Eric. You need to expand on this as much as you can. In any athletic sport you can't fake Core. Not so sure about the red, white and blue concept as I would think, Obliques & Lats. The Obliques tie into the Pelvis and Swing the Legs. The upper Thorax Swings the Shoulders. The Origin of Motion starts with Core and is Sent Up, Down and from In to Out in a Radial Fashion.. As my Rib-cage Rotates on it's Tilted Axis the Club is Hurled into Orbit. Take a long piece of Rope. Tie it off at you Belly Button so there is 2 or 3 feet in hanging. Swing to Rope with you Core and watch what happens to the Club. The Core Leads both in the BS and the DS. Impact will be fully Rotated and you will cover the Ball Nicely. Stay on this until you become proficient. You will be happy.
Appreciate the feedback, Dave! I will continue to study....of course this was just an attempt to make things as simple as possible for the average golfer to understand and implement
@@CogornoGolf Now that a number of people are on board with the Core Driven Swing there is profound feeling of Energy emitting from your Core out to the Ball Via the Club. Here is the Deal. You need to develop a Trigger. The Trigger is Left, Right, LEFT. A slight contraction of the Left Oblique followed by the Right Lat activation starts the Core Rotating. Once the core rotates, it hurls the club in Motion. Here is another feel. Rather than doing a lawn mower pull, you do the opposite. You (in feel) allow the right elbow Rise on the Rib-cage as the Core is Rotating. This articulates the right wrist (bows) so when the club rounds the top corner it is already slotting for the Downswing. Now it comes down to how much you can Balance these Forces. As you develop this Core Motion you will be able to get into your Left side much earlier than you may have ever before. I will leave it there. Lets see where Eric takes this?
Eric, thanks for getting to core info as I asked you to talk about a few months ago. However, I think you should have also talked about how much or little your core is engaged during setup, backswing, and thru swing and not just distance from ball.
Great video, tried it today on the range. It felt good to finally rotate through and around, BUT I was hitting a lot of chunk, and fat shots. I was driving good though.
I like to imagine an eye on each side of my lower chest that I want to point down and around so that they can "see" the ball. This move does a great job of tilting the shoulders and keeping the head centered. I blend these tilting moves, with a pelvis driven lower body pivot leading things both ways, to get enough hip turn back and through.
@@CogornoGolf Thanks for this tip, Eric. I didn't do very well with thinking of a color for the left side because I found it much harder to keep my head and body from drifting right during the backswing. Thinking of the eye on my left side makes it very easy to make a centered backswing. Using the color image for the right side (in my case red), on the other hand was super-effective. This red blur image triggers the best feel that I've ever had through the ball. I've never had a consistent free flowing, throwing feel through the ball like this before and it works with every club.
My swing was looking good, but was going super short. Because I was forcing and manipulating all the right positions. I was focused on starting with the lower body then went all arms… basically just using the lower body to be in the right position. Then bang I accidentally engaged my core one night doing practice swings thinking about dead arms, and boom it came together. Now my hips and weight naturally want to be in the right positions with forcing it.
Just stumbled across this video after having a session with my TPi instructor. She was talking about feeling the belly button initiate the back swing. Had a few practice swings but I was wondering how this impacts my weight shift in the downswing? Something I really struggle with. Great video thanks

Hi Eric I ❤️ your patriotic way of connecting our rotating abdominal muscles to our bending and turning obliques. We will just call this: The American way to swing a golf club❤️😃👍⛳️😂 Except i like to think of the trail side blue starting my backswing; not the red lead side . So since our obliques also connects our shoulders sockets to our hip sockets all I need to think about on my backswing is that as my trail right blue shoulder is rotating up and around 20 degrees range of motion; my lead left red shoulder is naturally rotating down and around at 20 degrees range of motion causing my lead red side bending of my body and then on my downswing as my lead red shoulder is rotating up and around at 20 degrees range of motion, my trail blue shoulder is rotating down and around 20 degrees causing my trail blue side bending of my body until both my shoulders finally level off together shutting of my obliques at the end of my swing. As far as my elbows go they can only follow the lead of my rotating shoulders working harmony together and never the other way around. Cheers
To decrease distance from the ball on the downswing it feels like I'm taking a bow towards to ball aggressively using my core muscles. Side bend feels were great for my golf last year but this stuff is next level!
Eric what do you suggest as a takeaway trigger for the rib cage turn/turn? I find that whatever takeaway trigger I use-waggle, forward press, lateral body shift toward target etc. the body part being used for the trigger moves that body part into the pole position so to speak-and brain connections to other body parts become secondary. What do you suggest? Thank!
Hey Rick! Starting the swing feeling the turning and tilting being controlled primarily by your body motions (a lot of chest and core...less arms and hands) helps keep the club head on plane. You can feel rib cage/shoulder down towards the ball on the way back👍 Here are a couple of good ones to help with those feels/triggers: ruclips.net/video/Di3bCZoeDY4/видео.html ruclips.net/video/ngke5xPA1NE/видео.html
Gold! I never really thought of turning on an “axis” more or less just “turning”. This old turn causes my left shoulder to lift my head up on the back swing. Should I try to get that left shoulder under my chin?
Excellent could be the best advice ever in Golf. Have tried it and felt great results. A diffrent feel to make me lean more in my backswing and follow through and good for the back. This could be the tip of tips
Eric it seems to give me incredible result.. I'll know tomorrow on the golf course. This is the best tip ever.. I'll let you know tomorrow.. I appreciate you improving my life over this. Thanks.
hi Eric. Does this also help with clearing the hips or rotating the hips? It felt like that this movement kind of felt like this was engaging my hips better by moving my core within the swing. Please let me know if I’m wrong. Thank you
When youre at the starting position you have front bend, but then as you move to get the red rib cage closest to the ball you add left side bend right? And at the same time the front bend decreases?
Great concept. I've started to realize I needed to keep my spine angle the same through impact and this idea seems simple to apply. Looking forward to trying it. Thanks for the video.
@@CogornoGolf just tried it today. Your tip has given me a greater shoulder turn. I hit some very good shots. I started to draw and hook some shots during my round. Never really had that shot pattern. So I was pleased with my shots. Can't believe such a simple idea has really helped me. Thanks again.
This needs more attention.. the belly part of the golfswing vs the chest part. Should the belly be at 45dgr to the right from start, just like the hip, or should the belly also turn and seperate from the hip. Someone should make a shirtless golfswing video so you can see how things stretch and seperate and what is correct.. i am so confused if i am turning correctly or not.. i hit straight and okey long, but on my quest to increase distance, i really need some more detail on these things..
Thanks for the comments and questions there.... Probably the best video we did on the separation part of each segment and WHEN that should clarify for you is this video I did with Trevor: ruclips.net/video/NIbmk5fU1Hs/видео.html
Such an important concept here. IMO we need to retire the word "turn". The complexity of the "backswing" body motions is so far removed from being just a "turn" its staggering. We should come up with an entirely different way to describe it.
But the magic happens at the other side, in order to turn the left side to the ball in the backswing you need to engage the muscles in the right side as contracting, right? You can not push the left side.
@@CogornoGolfRight, but right side contracting seem pretty essential. If you only push you typically see maintaining the flexion but away from target, head moving from the ball, maybe rising. The right side needs to actively clear in order to make room for the pushing left side.
This is better! Great idea! I like everything about this video, except I think you need a less jarring intro. The video editing is great, the music and sound effects are a bit jarring. I'm not sure it matches your style. I think maybe something more laid back, relaxed feeling or just plain softer. Think bluesy or Sinatra type opening. You are not a jarring personality type. You're easy to listen to and that's what the intro should convey. Of course, this is just one mans opinion.
You started out saying Red is left and blue is right. In the middle of the video you change it. You say left side is blue and fight side is white. I love your videos but you should proof before posting.

Except i like to think of the trail side blue starting my backswing; not the red lead side .
Cheers

Eric should I at address add a bit of tension to my core which would keep the arms and upper body moving as one unit
Hey! you can try that, yes. I haven't found a YES or NO that applies to everyone there
Video amazement, Eric. Sorry for my English
Thanks, Carlos!
You can feel rib cage/shoulder down towards the ball on the way back👍
Here are a couple of good ones to help with those feels/triggers:

so do you engage your core while you swing ie tilt pelvis back by engaging core before and during swing.
Not consciously
Simple swing thought for range and play. I think lifting is the major instigator.
Hope it help!
Gold! I never really thought of turning on an “axis” more or less just “turning”. This old turn causes my left shoulder to lift my head up on the back swing. Should I try to get that left shoulder under my chin?
Hey Andrew!
Yeah thats a fine feel is that helps you
If you had a pointer on your left shoulder, Where would it be pointing in relationship to the ball line?
1-2 ft outside ball
Hold the triangle, keep the tilt , rotate by core (ribcage).
superb !
Thanks!
Brilliant 👍
Thanks Simon!
Excellent could be the best advice ever in Golf. Have tried it and felt great results. A diffrent feel to make me lean more in my backswing and follow through and good for the back. This could be the tip of tips
Appreciate it, Mark!
Eric it seems to give me incredible result.. I'll know tomorrow on the golf course. This is the best tip ever.. I'll let you know tomorrow.. I appreciate you improving my life over this. Thanks.
hi Eric. Does this also help with clearing the hips or rotating the hips? I got into my golf posture and put my hands on my core, just about my core area, and tried to rotate my my ribs like you talked about your video. It felt like that this movement kind of felt like this was engaging my hips better by moving my core within the swing. Please let me know if I’m wrong. Thank you
Hey Christopher!
"Does this also help with clearing the hips or rotating the hips? I"
-Yep!
Wow, great way to simplify tilts and turns, and how to control those!
Thanks, Scott!
When youre at the starting position you have front bend, but then as you move to get the red rib cage closest to the ball you add left side bend right? And at the same time the front bend decreases?
Yep
Great concept Eric! But you changed the colors during your explanation? You went from R/W/B and then switched R and B on us
Lol sorry about that!
Great concept. I've started to realize I needed to keep my spine angle the same through impact and this idea seems simple to apply. Looking forward to trying it. Thanks for the video.
Appreciate it! Hope it helps!
Eric
Shouldn't the Left side be Blue, and the Right side Red?
Another very helpful video.
LOL fair point!
Probably the best video we did on the separation part of each segment and WHEN that should clarify for you is this video I did with Trevor:

Mind blown.
:)
brilliant
Thanks, Jeffrey!
Stack N tilt system
Hey John!
Sure! ITs simply what a good golf swing does.....we can call that whatever we want :)
Eric, the Left side a Blue and the Right side is Red.
:)
i always think "hips" but this sounds good
Hope it helps!
Another Great video Eric, and isn't this the same idea as Jack Nicklaus had about rotating around an imaginary stake running through his core?
Thanks! Yessir....same general idea!
A swing thought to end all other swing thoughts🔚
Hey Prakash! I agree....if your club face and path is good to go this one handles a lot all in one!!
Such an important concept here.
IMO we need to retire the word "turn". The complexity of the "backswing" body motions is so far removed from being just a "turn" its staggering.
We should come up with an entirely different way to describe it.
Thats a fair point!
I guess "plane aligned pre-strike multi-segment potential energy coil and load bending moment and rotation" is harder to say than turn... 😉
But the magic happens at the other side, in order to turn the left side to the ball in the backswing you need to engage the muscles in the right side as contracting, right? You can not push the left side.
both
@@CogornoGolfRight, but right side contracting seem pretty essential. If you only push you typically see maintaining the flexion but away from target, head moving from the ball, maybe rising. The right side needs to actively clear in order to make room for the pushing left side.
👍
Cover the ball = no worries.
:)
It's so hard to use the core without anxiety
Haha why is that?
I think you mean red...white and blue...not bLue white and red...got it
:)
Love the feedback, Phillip! Always looking to get better and I will make sure to bring that up!
Appreciate you being with us and the support!
+1
Nope. Love the intro. Always have. Great swing advise BTW.
🇺🇸
:)
You started out saying Red is left and blue is right. In the middle of the video you change it. You say left side is blue and fight side is white. I love your videos but you should proof before posting.
Hey Harold!
Oops! So sorry about that! Thanks for watching!
