Why did you put Steve Kerr in there super replaceable And Jordan won without and beat Rodman to win his championship your only valid player was Scottie
Yeah, Shawn Kemp was something else that year. And yes it just dawned on me that his stats in the 6-game finals are impressive considering that Dennis Rodman was the one defending him. Not only that, the Bulls starting 5 had 4 of the BEST DEFENDERS in the NBA during that season--Rodman, Pippen, Jordan and Harper. Just imagine how hard it was to score buckets versus a team like that. And Kemp averaged 23+ points and 10 rebs on 51% FG shooting in 6-games. Yeah, hindsight is 20/20, that was impressive.
The 96 Finals MVP is conflicting. MJ had pretty bad efficiency for his standards and Kemp out performed him on the defensive end but MJ still outscored him. Kemp also had more turnovers and less assists. It's definitely very close.
its not just defensive side, its also the rebounding and efficiency area because mjs efficiency compared to shawns was definitely a big margin. it was a 15% fg differential while kemp was better at the free throw. the 3pt wasnt that much of a differential compared to 15% fg especially when mj only hit 1 three a game. the rebounding differential takes care of the playmaking differential already plus the defensive gap. playmaking = mj but close, scoring = mj but close. efficiency easily shawn kemp, rebounding easily kemp, defense close but shawn kemp. efficiency differential> scoring, rebounding differential> assists and shawn kemps defense to get the edge over jordan
If you didn't see '99 finals (or any other Spurs finals appearence) nonyou cannot understand how much valuable Tim Duncan was on defense. Maybe Rodman could be a tougher 1 vs. 1 defender but TD was a better defender overall. This seems to understimated because the Spurs were always a team focused organization, not a star player team. And despite this Tim averaged 27 ppg.
I don't watch the spurs finals gamed because they could never win back to back (and because they basically almost every time not make it to the nba finals once they win it last year or make it to the nba finals last year if they didn't win it) and also in my opinion alright it's my opinion so don't scream at me please the spurs wouldn't have won the '99 nba finals if mj didn't retire and the bulls stayed together
Kemp was monster in 96 finals. He faced great defense and still put these numbers. Everyone who was runner up to Jordan put great numbers, bus Jordan put monter numbers.
I feel like after 6 straight FMVP Keeps you felt pressure to give the award to Kemp. Seen the series live and was a Sonics fan at the time. You can't compare efficiency the way you did in that era between guards and PFs. Kemp shot everything around the rim.
@@ezekwu wrong, it definitely isn't true. Rodman was great, Rodman was valuable for that Chicago team, but he was never the Finals MVP, Jordan was always the best player from Chicago and nobody wasn't even close.
1996 is Jordan. He was averaging 31, 5, and 5 with 2 steals a game in the first 3 games where they won all of them in 46/50/81 splits. Then he got the best perimeter defender at the guard position ever guard him the rest of the series. And the numbers for the complete series are still amazing considering Gary Payton guarded him for half the series and the team they went against was probably the best team Jordan ever saw in the Finals as the Sonics won 63 games that year. Shawn Kemp was good but he was so limited to the paint. And he also averaged 4 turnovers a game and led the Finals in turnovers. And for someone in Kemp's position to be forced to that many turnovers was very uncharacteristic at the time.
PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON: (1) THE REAL DREAM TEAM 2 (2) SHAQ V. WILT (3) HOW GOOD WAS ALONZO MOURNING ACTUALLY (4) IF THE ABA MVP WAS GIVEN TO THE BEST PLAYER
I'm a Jordan fan from way back and it makes me laugh when I read the comments. "Gary Payton was a problem for Jordan!" this is because in the 96 finals his PPG went down from 30 to 27. This is a testament to how great he was for any other player this would've been an Epic series in the friggin finals!
Not sure if you know but Hersey Hawkins matched up with MJ for the first three games to rest Payton for offensive. This allowed MJ he averaged 31 points in those games. For games 4-6 George Karl finally let Payton check Jordan which lead to MJ average a career low 23 points for the following three games on lowered efficiency. Although they aren’t terrible numbers if Payton had guarded MJ the full series it would have caused major issues for him and the Chicago Bulls.
I was never a fan of the Sonics and I don't like Payton, but they were really good and it's such a shame what happened to Kemp. He was an amazing player.
The Sonics (94) and Jazz (95) are two of the best teams ever that didn’t win the championship. That’s how good the Bulls and Joran were. Sonics won 64 and out scored opponents by about 8/game. They beat Jazz in 7…and the next year, Jazz got even better. 64 wins and out scored opponents by nearly 9/game!! Even 96 Jazz are among the best to not win championship- 62 wins and out scores others by 7/gm.
You should do a video about how impressive Michael Jordan never losing a series while having home court advantage and being the only superstar player to ever accomplish that
watching this really reminded me why Michael Jordan was the goat, I went back and watch game 1 in 1992 and it was literally the most excited I ever got when Jordan made all of those threes, one of my favorite moments as and nba fan and since I watched Jordan’s last shot like 100 times, this game might be my favorite Jordan game ever.
Damn, Olajuwon was sort of the Jordan of centers. Like, impossibly dominant. Being the only AStar on the team and winning it two straight times right in the heart of the 90s. And this era was the golden age of big men, and he dominated Ewing, then Robinson, then Shaq.
It's amazing that MJ's 27.3 ppg, .415 fg%, 4.2 apg, 3.0 tov in the '96 Finals is comparable to Kobe's Finals career average of 25.3 ppg, .412 fg%, 5.1 apg, 3.3 tov The Sonics' general strategy throughout the series was to rotate different defenders on MJ every few minutes. Contrary to popular belief, GP was already included in the defensive rotation by Game 3, and directly caused more disruptions to MJ's best performance of the series (36 pts & 5 asts) than on the Father's Day clincher when MJ did well against GP as opposed to the other Sonics. However, GP deserves significant credit for setting the defensive tone in Game 4, while MJ bounced back in Game 5 despite the loss.
The way the Sonics and jazz would guard mj in those finals would’ve never been allowed today they were basically double and triple teaming him while handchecking and wrestling him in a way contrary to many the mid 90s till the early 2000s was the real defensive era not the 80s that’s why Jordan’s Fg% in the finals was low
@@jp3813 it was in a way but the level of defense played against mj when he came back till 98 was real defense that’s why jordan mainly shot the fadeaway cause it was damn near impossible to get to the rim for an easy layup or dunk like how it’s easy today. Jordan was averaging over 30 a game while shooting basically 50% for a career in an era where defense was actually played especially the mid 90s till 2004
@@jp3813 let’s not forget jordan was doing this at shooting guard as well this isn’t Lebron or Shaq playing bully ball and getting easy dunks or layups jordan was 6-6 200 pounds doing this in the most defensive and arguably the toughest era in nba history.
Love that you brought up the 91 Bulls vs Lakers final and all the injuries the Lakers dealt with. I always bring up that Finals whenever people try to excuse a Finals loss (such as with LeBron) or when ESPN constantly tries to find excuses or brings up injuries. I pretty much say that they aren't going back to Jordan's 1st Championship and say he didn't earn it because the Lakers were injured and Magic had no help. They don't say that the Pistons didn't deserve the sweep over the Lakers because the Lakers came into the series injured. They don't say that the Celtics didn't deserve the 07 Championship vs The Lakers because Bynum and Ariza were injured. So they shouldn't be making excuses and trying to say that LeBron's finals losses 'don't count' or that the Warriors finals wins 'have an asterisk'. They don't say that the Bulls didn't deserve their Championship in their 72-10 season because Payton was injured and yet they still held Jordan to 41% shooting and had multiple chances to win despite that. True legends don't need excuses, and ESPN does the modern day legends no favors by trying to find excuses for their favorites(I say favorites but it's mainly just LeBron). And I say that as a Lakers fan that is overjoyed to have him.
You're touching on something on something I've been thinking about for a while, and a video I want to make one day. Injuries potentially changing outcomes has ALWAYS been a part of the game, so yeah, excuses or "asterisks" are just kinda weak. Just a few examples from Jordan's era alone... 1990 ECF Game 7: Paxson with out with a bad ankle, and Pippen played like crap with a migraine. 1991 Finals: Worthy and Scott missing time with injuries. 1996 ECF: Horace Grant missed 3 games to an injury.
That's a big lie. Worthy and Scott wasn't injured until Game 4. Scott disappeared completely in this series even before injury. Worthy played well until he got injured. And no the Lakers were not undermanned coz Perkins and Divac put up double digit scoring while during Game 5 Campbell played well as replacement player for Worthy. Game 3 loss was really devastating coz Pippen was out of the game after fouling out and they had a 2 point lead in dying seconds. Then MJ took over.
I'm glad the Reign Man gets more credit. He reminds me of Giannis (one of my favorite players today), an unstoppable atheltic power forward with flashy thunderous dunks. Looking at How Jordan's efficiency drops as he ages in the finals also shows that his prime was truly during the first 3peat.
Yes very sad no one remembers him in his prime. The 90’s had arguably the best PF and Kemp was always in the top especially the most exciting player. How he is not a hall of fame is crazy! Shawn Kemp was by far the best player in the 1996 finals. His numbers don't tell the whole story. Kemp had one bad game because he got in foul trouble, that's why his ppg is not higher, but he totally dominated the other 5 games.
Good and honest observation Jonny! I still have the 1996 Finals on VHS. And you're right, Kemp was the better player. Scoring, rebounding and defending.... that zany Rodman was pretty much just supplying Rebounds only.
Looking at Jordan and Kemp's statistics side-by-side, I'd say MJ was still better; he definitely had better overall stats. Plus he was the more impactful one during the series. Although Kemp was still a brilliant runner up and a very under-appreciated player by many today.
i agree, but just barely. reason i'd take MJ still is because he lead his team to the championship(so what he was doing was more impactful in winning), and he was being doubled more often(and scored more ppg). that said, Kemp certainly can be aruged as playing the best this series, and i think he should be in the hall of fame (along with KJ from the suns)

In game 2 which was the only close game of the series Kemp didn't play as well as his series stats, in the close game Jordan got 29/8/6. Game 3 Jordan scored 36 and effectively dug the sonics into a 3-0 hole. Jordan: Points, Assists, Steals, Less Turnovers Kemp: Blocks, Rebounds, Field Goal Percentage
The reason Jordan had a poor stats in 96 was cause his teammates wouldn't hit a fucking shot to save their lives so the Sonics just double and triple teamed Jordan every possession. You give Seattle's defense too much credit. Most of jordan's team mates were shooting like 10% from the field.
Shawn Kemp was not the best player in 96 i am sorry. 1. He got worse as the series went on his scoring was steadily declining with a one game exception. 32,29,14 25,22 ,18. 2. He got dominated on rebounding. 3. His defense was mediocre. 4.Gary Payton s defense on MJ is only reason they didnt get swept 5. Rodman was guarding Schrempf, not Kemp most the series. 6. When it mattered most he didnt produce. 7. In games 3,4,5,6 he was even the best player in his team. 8. In games 3 and 6 he wasnt even second best player on his team. Schrempf had better games 9. His number slipped when Rodman was guarding him( which he wasn t most the time.) 10. Payton was better in 4 out of 6 games. His D on MJ is legendary and made him Sonics MVP.

He only changed the 96 finals to make it so it wasn’t the same. Jordan had less rebounds blocks and field goal percentage because he’s a big. That’s historically what bigs have an advantage over smalls on. I also feel like you severely underplayed the fact that the DPOY of that season was guarding Jordan for games 4,5, and 6. In game 4 and 6 Jordan’s percentage was in the 30s, but in game 1 it was 50, game 2 was over 40 and game 3 was 47. He also shot 50 in game 5. With all that said that would be the equivalent of Rudy Gobert gaurding kemp, and we all know that’s if that happened he wouldn’t have had as great of a series. With all that being said Jordan still got 27 a game, I find it hard to believe that his stats were considered worse than kemp’s, especially when you put it into context. Not to mention the fact that only “bigs” shot over 50% because it was such a defensively oriented series. The fact that Jordan had 27 while being gaurded by the DPOY is a lot more impressive than a big scoring 23 on 50% shooting and 10 boards. Fight Me.
I'm a life long Chicagoan who grew up in the 90's watching Jordan. I don't have words for that man. Larry Bird put it best when he said "That's not Michael Jordan. That's God disguised as Michael Jordan".

Still tough D performances.

Kemp looked like an NBA player while the rest looked like college players. Kemp was by far the best player in those finals. Jordan played horrible. His ppg is inflated because the refs would always give him more points at the free throw line. I saw those finals.
I don’t agree with 96... and my reason is not because Jordan is Mecca it’s because we don’t take into account disruptive presence on court or the fact that the last game diluted his numbers. If you Have Jordan it opens up the floor for everyone else. They were great two seasons prior without him they owed it to him to stand up for one game.

Honestly I think you just made the change in 96 cuz otherwise there would b no changes.... yes Jordan had his worst finals that year but his numbers are comparable to the 98 finals as well only slightly worse FG% and Karl Malone had better numbers than kemp in my opinion but you still give it to Jordan in 98... instead of him losing both I think he should win both... like yes Shawn kemp had a higher FG% but taken into account that he’s a forward that shoots more higher percentage shots he should have a higher FG % and he scored 5 less ppg than jordan.. so it wasn’t like kemp was Hakeem averaging 30 ppg on same efficiency...
I feel like for 1991 he was saying that Jordan and Johnson both deserved it. Because he spent so much time talking about how great both of them were in the series
I think you pretty much nailed it. I think the Kemp nod is right under your criteria. I think in reality that Jordan gets the nod simply because he put up those numbers while winning. The numbers don't tell the whole story about why Jordan had such low numbers, and I think a lot of that has to do with just how well the Sonic were guarding him and the fact that Jordan was constantly being fed the ball by his teammates despite the fact that they were getting better looks (IIRC, it's been a few years since I rewatched the series).

Just imagine how hard it was to score buckets versus a team like that. And Kemp averaged 23+ points and 10 rebs on 51% FG shooting in 6-games. Yeah, hindsight is 20/20, that was impressive.
Facts, Rodman and that lockdown lineup were of course the real MVPs but it's overlooked how Kemp and GP went off despite being that much overmatched.

Facts
The only defender better than Duncan is prolly hakeem
dennis rodman was definelty harder to play against mentaly. He could get in the head of everyone.
I think Duncan was slightly better on defense than Hakeem while Hakeem was slightly better on offense.
@@jijmotorp3079 David Robinson was a better defender than Duncan. So was Ewing. Ben Wallace was close. Mutombo was better. Zo was better. And what?
Kemp was monster in 96 finals. He faced great defense and still put these numbers. Everyone who was runner up to Jordan put great numbers, bus Jordan put monter numbers.
I feel like after 6 straight FMVP Keeps you felt pressure to give the award to Kemp. Seen the series live and was a Sonics fan at the time. You can't compare efficiency the way you did in that era between guards and PFs. Kemp shot everything around the rim.
Anyway, he was still better than Jordan

Don't forget Jordan shooting his worst field goal percentage in the finals against the Super Sonics
Look at the efficiency of those 27 points tho
His fg was really low for his standards tho
I was never a fan of the Sonics and I don't like Payton, but they were really good and it's such a shame what happened to Kemp. He was an amazing player.
Unfortunately people remember the end of his career. He never really had an injury, he could have been 8-10 times all-star
@@loverboymr Very well said. And if Kemp would have avoided his off the court demons. He could have been playing like the Reignman until 35 or 36?

Damn, Olajuwon was sort of the Jordan of centers. Like, impossibly dominant. Being the only AStar on the team and winning it two straight times right in the heart of the 90s. And this era was the golden age of big men, and he dominated Ewing, then Robinson, then Shaq.
12:46 look Jordan looking Kemp doing his Jumpman logo....
I've been waiting for this
It's amazing that MJ's 27.3 ppg, .415 fg%, 4.2 apg, 3.0 tov in the '96 Finals is comparable to Kobe's Finals career average of 25.3 ppg, .412 fg%, 5.1 apg, 3.3 tov
The Sonics' general strategy throughout the series was to rotate different defenders on MJ every few minutes.
@@Ali-on8dc MJ's age was also a factor.
@@jp3813 it was in a way but the level of defense played against mj when he came back till 98 was real defense that’s why jordan mainly shot the fadeaway cause it was damn near impossible to get to the rim for an easy layup or dunk like how it’s easy today. Jordan was averaging over 30 a game while shooting basically 50% for a career in an era where defense was actually played especially the mid 90s till 2004

h town in here
Love that you brought up the 91 Bulls vs Lakers final and all the injuries the Lakers dealt with.
Injuries do change the game and can make a finals much easier/harder
@@jonnyarnett That sounds like a pretty awesome idea! :)
@@crisaracon7379 That's one of the reasons I have that clutch shot over Divac as maybe Jordan's greatest shot ever.
Yes, he had inner demons, but he made us jump out of our seats. I wish Gary succeeded in talking sense into him. Stockton - Malone and Kemp-Payton.
@@loverboymr it’s not crazy at all. His resume isn’t great. He was great but not for very long. He fizzled out pretty quickly due to injuries, weight issues, and his off court troubles. Everyone should keep it I think
Agreed, MJ still comes out on top by a bit unfortunately.
i agree, but just barely. reason i'd take MJ still is because he lead his team to the championship(so what he was doing was more impactful in winning), and he was being doubled more often(and scored more ppg). that said, Kemp certainly can be aruged as playing the best this series, and i think he should be in the hall of fame (along with KJ from the suns)

the problem with warriors vs the bulls is that their main power is their backcourt which had to go against jordan, pippen, rodman and harper.they dont have a chance. most difficult team for the bulls would have been the early 2000s lakers who had shaq and kobe or the 1986 celtics with parish mchale bird etc .

In game 2 which was the only close game of the series Kemp didn't play as well as his series stats, in the close game Jordan got 29/8/6. Game 3 Jordan scored 36 and effectively dug the sonics into a 3-0 hole. Kemp: Blocks, Rebounds, Field Goal Percentage
It was nice to watch. Thanks dude!

4.Gary Payton s defense on MJ is only reason they didnt get swept
5. Rodman was guarding Schrempf, not Kemp most the series.
6. When it mattered most he didnt produce.
7. In games 3,4,5,6 he was even the best player in his team.
8. In games 3 and 6 he wasnt even second best player on his team. Schrempf had better games
9. His number slipped when Rodman was guarding him( which he wasn t most the time.)
10. Payton was better in 4 out of 6 games. His D on MJ is legendary and made him Sonics MVP.
You're correct the worrm didn't defend ☔ that much in the series... and Dennis Rodman was actually the MVP. It kind of sucks to that a lot of these guys who never watched Jordan actually play are making videos about. him. They are just buying the propaganda. 👎
Agree with this. His numbers look good, but at the time, watching the series, it was clear that Rodman got into his head at key moments. Always thought Rodman was the key to that series, and a lot of it was because of the effect he had on Kemp.

The only issue I have with taking Kemp over Jordan is just how do you give MVP honors to a player that couldn't even take the series to 7.
Fight Me.

Because he spent so much time talking about how great both of them were in the series
i think jordan should have still won finals mvp in 1996
agree Jordan average and had more Points, Assists, Steals, and fewer turnovers.
He did!
Yes I agree with your analysis
I agree. Outside of 96 the finals MVPs went to the best player in the series.
Once again, a 90s basketball video ends up being an MJ tribute lol
Well what did you expect?
Man, you are incredible like Thinking basketball
