  • Many of us are living life completely out of balance-and the type of imbalance that affects almost everyone in our society is hormonal imbalance. Men tend to have declining hormone levels as they age, and low testosterone can cause men to lose muscle and gain fat, leading to sexual dysfunction, low sex drive, fatigue, mental fogginess, and bone loss. However, making changes to your diet and lifestyle can have an incredible effect on rebalancing hormone levels and increasing testosterone. Additionally, testosterone replacement therapy can also be used to rebalance your hormones and increase happiness, vitality, and health.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papanicolaou to discuss the functional medicine approach to treating low testosterone and how they determine when to use hormone replacement therapy.
George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health - a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

Holy smokes, you have totally encapsulated a year’s worth of wading through the chaff of endless big pharma and big food’s endless propaganda and into a succession of videos that actually deals with the ROOT cause of the issues and not just the symptoms. What a concept. God bless you doc.

Great T. and related hormone issues. Me, been there done that and still there, ha. About High Quality supplements: Are there preferred dosages for - DIM and Biotin(or a preferred form of biotin)? Also for the following: Saw Palmetto, Stinging Nettle and Boron? Us Baby Boomers could use a lot of real Functional help if u will. Also is Lightly bound T. considered bio available or just the Free T?
I hope that Dr, Hyman can produce more T. related vids for us men that have to rely on our GP's.ill advised advice? So grateful that I saw this vid. Thanks

As I listen to this podcast, I wondered about some recent news I discovered. I read that the FDA is investigating the use of compounding hormones claiming that that valid research does not sufficient support the use of these therapies. I do NOT agree! In the 2001 FDA statement, it appears to be a strong push to support only pharmaceutical medication
. Bio identical hormones used judiciously are effective, I believe. Also, what is available via the pharmaceutical industry is not the magic bullet. Can you please help?

I listened to the podcast version a few days or weeks ago and don’t recall him mentioning brain trauma as a cause. It’s been an issue for me as I believe it’s why my body doesn’t have adequate hormone production/utilization but who knows with everything we’re exposed to on the daily now. Just wanted to put it out there for people.

    • @adamthorntonillustration9281

      Hi Troy,
I suspect that, because a brain trauma is a massive potentially chronic stressor on the body, it would come under the issue of stress.
I hope you're able to manage stress in your life.

@@adamthorntonillustration9281 I agree. it's sad, and deeply disconcerting. However that's the sad reality of Medical Practice nowadays. 99% of practitioners are like that and it is virtually impossible to find anyone who isn't. Accessing functional medicine physicians via telemedicine can be incredibly costly and often times they don't have the right to practice in my area. Where I live there is only one functional medicine doctor and she charges around $300 per visit not covered by insurance. What are we supposed to do?

I would love to know if you have seen any improvement on that or had any enlightenment about it
I know this is from 3 years ago, but my husband, who's around 46 is I guess around 20?
He's a little overweight, but only in his belly, but he's super strong, our frequency has gone down but when we do, it's totally incredible and he doesn't seem to have any trouble in that department, he doesn't have any boobage, and has a great head of hair, so now I am freaking out about the possible health issues, which I don't even know what to check out first
Obviously, he has gotten pretty freaking depressed about this, and has just as much stress or more than most men his age in the U.S. so could that be all that it is?
      It just seems crazy
I guess I was just desperately hoping you had some of the wisdom of hindsight because I don't think his female doctor is paying enough attention and I just think he needs a more astute doc on this subject, and any advice or experience you might have to share would be very appreciated
Thank you in advance, God bless you

Don’t be concerned with the numbers so much as how you feel and perform. Genes can play a role in hormone levels and some people like Thomas DeLauer do fine with less (he’s a beast). If you don’t have energy, sex drive, zest for life, etc. then start with diet and lifestyle and be strict about it. Lots of animal protein and fat an absolutely NO SOY. Good sleep and reduce cortisol as much as possible. But if you feel great otherwise then your body just does a better job with lower levels. Hope that helps.
