Possibly one of the last great classic chillers before the slasher films took over. In fact I would say it's almost a perfect fusion of the two subgeneres, mixing both the style of films like Phantom of the Opera, The Old Dark House, Mad Love, and Dracula with the modern storytelling of films like Se7en, Saw, and Zodiac.
One of my favorite movies! First saw it at the "midnight movies" at the local college when my Dad took a friend and I to the theatre for my 15th birthday.
A cathedral organ, especially all stops out as in the widely known version of this movie, sounds much scarier than a theatre organ, here with the typical nasal, buzzing French horn rank and silvery celeste diapason (detuned pipe rank, making it sound sweeter). I love the sound of both. Thanks for the upload!
I always knew the organ music was different at one time!!! I’ve been watching this movie for years and one day the tone just changed.... I was like wait???
I watched this on British TV during the mid to late 1970's and watched it again in the mid 80's and I noticed a subtle change in the music that accompanied the opening credits...the original is more in keeping for the time period in which the film was originally released...oh and I prefer it.
I love this film, and the sequel as well. the opening 10 mins Of Phibes Rises Again is as much campy fun as anything out if early BOND films or Batman. Vive la Phibes!!!
I suspect this was the temp track on the film and it was switched in the post period, as evidenced by the grand-organ usage in the film’s trailer. However, it probably slipped thru the cracks (or there were some legal complications) for the foreign music & effects track. Some of the score is tracked from the KPM music library, so I wonder if this wasn’t part of that.
I have the Shout Factory Blu-ray collections of Vincent Price movies, and the intro to Dr. Phibes sounds just like this. I do not recall ever hearing a different opening.
Every (US disk) version I've seen, the intro has more of a showoff keyboard-flourish, and not until after the AI logo fades and the camera starts to pan off the floor: ruclips.net/video/9OM18mJwMDM/видео.html THAT version sounds more like the Dr.'s.
@@ericjanssen394 @Brandon Blackmoor When _Dr. Phibes_ was released in theatres originally (and subsequently on DVD), I believe MGM-EMI (one of the financiers of the film, with the other being American International's UK branch) wanted to plug their LP with Nicholas Kynaston, _Great Organ Works,_ after hearing that they wanted a version of the War March for _Phibes I,_ so EMI supplied the tapes or LP of the War March. The Kynaston Version, Eric, is the one that's also used for the theatrical trailers.
That is the most likely explanation for the use of the Kynaston performance of War March of the Priests. Having seen an original 35mm print of the film, I can confirm that the Kynaston performance was what was used on the soundtrack.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. It was campy as hell and it was just an awesome film. The sequel is worth watching also. But they could have done so much more with the source books. But, I you don't appreciate the campy humor in this film... You may never understand a black comedy in any way. Theater of Blood was another. Love it or hate it. . The three films were brilliant.
@@marcusblackwell2372 There were 5 books that were published. The first one was an adaptation of the screenplay and then they expanded upon the legend. They would have made great movies. When the first film came out, it was an original idea. But by the time the second film came out, there were 3 novels out and so many ideas floating around. Theatre of Blood came about instead. So it wasn't a total loss....
When Orion released the Phibes films on home video, they went cheap and didn't renew the music rights, and instead they used music they already had the rights to. In DR PHIBES RISES AGAIN they did the same thing, dropping Price singing SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW over the end credits and putting other music on it, which really ruined the impact of the original great ending. This is no great find, it is just the crap version that the fans of these movies hated and complained about for years.
I had been wanting to watch it with that ending with Price singing. I remember i had the movie recorded from tv to VHS from a german dubbed version, and it had that ending. But on my dvd and later on bluray, it didnt have that ending.
@@morriconelover I just bought a 7-movie Vincent Price DVD set (made by MGM), with both Phibes films - "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" is intact. (Which makes sense, they likely own that song, Wizard Of Oz and all.)
They played this on the way out of church this morning and the first thing that came to my mind was this movie lol…
just why?

You can't beat a villain who plays a bit of Mendelssohn on the organ
Erik played toccata...sooo whattt
The actual organist who produced this recording for the movie was a bit of villain, its quite a funny read.
Right you are, Sir! 🥂
@@absentmindedprof are you replying to my comment or the other one?
The best bit is where he lifts off both hands and yet the organ keeps playing!
its the puppets!
Truly the GREATEST organist EVER!!!!

Jon Lord paid his respects.
That is due to the sustain pedals. The pedals also are used to strike chords. The massive pipe organ is a very complex instrument
You can play an organ entirely with your feet using the foot pedals. So you can play entire songs without using your hands.
Phibes, and Theater of Blood! Popcorn afternoon!
Watched the movies again recently they're brilliant 👍
You can hear this version on the VHS videotape of "The Abominnable Dr.Phibes".
phantom meets Vincent price

One of my favourite films a masterpiece
It's probably the most beautiful horror film ever made.

Oh y'all better believe this is on my regular postlude rotation, and I've played it for a couple of weddings
Hmm... Postlude? I suspect I may be misunderstanding something here... I used to have a morphine habit, myself...
Dr. Phibes lives again!
One of the creepiest movies I've ever seen!
and its kinda sad how it ended.. this song plays again as he looks so old and frail at the end
Great cult film. Theatre of Blood was also grande with Michael Lewis music.
One of the greatest comedies of all time!
What made me laugh about this film phibes live in a residential area, play that organ it's amazing is neighbours work banging the walls!
This song was played at my weeding.
Do you always have such grand accompaniment to your gardening tasks?
I saw this when I was 10 and I remember that music perfectly...this isn't it.
this is a divine work of comedy right here.
yes it was a tragedy

Vive la Phibes!!!
Mendelssohn March of Baal Priest from "Athalie"
1:25 sounds insane but from that point on i can hear a bit of the Holy City
What lovely music... for a murder... Or two... Or three... Or nine.
I remember listening to organ music between periods of a hockey game. Not sure what they play now.
Magistralmente macabro!
Sinistro.

This must be where squid games got the idea for Frank Sinatra’s music score
