MY NAB 2024 PICKS (EP.175)

- I'm back from NAB 2024 and here are my picks from the show. More importantly I discuss the products I found that I think will allow us to enter into Virtual Production without the enormous cost of entry and the brain bar that is currently needed. It's a long one so 1.5x or 2x speed might be in order!

Interesting finds, thanks for the video.
You bet. How’s V2 coming along? Looking good from the posts.
Don't apologize for being very generous with your time. Gem. Great episode and well worth my time.
I won’t Bill and thanks for this. Who’s this Gem guy BTW?! An imposter? 😜
@@theC47 Irish Canadian spelling, eh!
@@theC47 Irish Canadian spelling and you are a gem, after all, eh!
Haha!
I played around with the Potato Jet tripod but it's not ready for prime time. I found the handle to be awkwardly positioned and it doesn't close smoothly. Turns out it's a prototype that had Potato Jet swinging from it fully extended in some NAB videos, so he probably tweaked it out of whack. Hope they address those issues.
Interesting. Yeah. I saw him hanging on it a few times during stuff I watched. Guess a disclaimer will be in order.
Excellent
Thanks!
Thank you for the video, just a suggestion, chapter marks can be really helpful, especially in such long videos
I’ll try my best but time definitely gets in the way sometimes when doing a daily series.
Batteries are very sexy!
Hope you had a blast at NAB! :)
Yes they are! Had a busy but also great time.
As a DP and Lighting Consultant at Nanlux I’m very concerned about apps like SwitchLight. When a director and I agree on a “look” I worry that someone in post now will have the ability to relight the movie based on a different interpretation of the story. Which is not to say that this doesn’t happen to a degree now in grading but apps like this can go so much further than that…. I spoke briefly with Eliot about how JetSet may integrate with image based lighting (through SeeMo I expect - like Mitch did with Prolicht), I hope to delve deeper into that in the near future. Your thoughts?
Hey Ron. Tomorrow’s episode will be about your question.
With all this talk of one-man-band it is clear that at some point there will not be enough work to keep the grip, lighting, audio and post people supported in the small markets. When you will need them, they will not be there. We see what is happening to the mom and pop retail market. The same will happen in out industry. Collaborating is better for our physical and mental health.
We are in this biz because we like/love to collaborate. The landscape is changing and we have to adapt if we want to continue in production. My hope is that we at least retain a small crew and start to use these tools to do cool stuff. Lots to unpack, learn about and figure out. It won’t be boring!
I actually saw you Siegel's Bagels on Saturday. I wanted to say hi and tell you how much I love the channel, but you were already gone by that point.
Cool! Yeah. I got an everything flagel, whitefish salad, tomatoes and capers. Skipped the red onion because of the show. Sorry we didn’t get to chat.
Guess you need small nuclear power plant to power this Puget laptop like all x86 based ones :D.
And if you travel you can save on plane tickets, since this would have so powerful fans that you can use it as a helicopter :D.
Yeah. I have a MacBook Pro which is basically silent. I was kinda shocked at how loud the fans were.
@@theC47 The thought of purchasing a PC makes me shudder.
Haha!
Many of these AI tools seem to be moving location work into post production. Reminiscent of "We'll fix it in the mix." in music production.
A caution: a lot of post production work is moving to a remote work model. People see this as "I can do my job from anywhere." Businesses see that as "This job can be done anywhere including low wage, educated nations like Nairobi, Czechoslovakia or Malaysia." Expect the bulk of those jobs to be exported in the next 20 years.
Advice to young people. Choose a career that requires at least 20% of the work to be done by a human on American soil. Jobs that require human fingers and eyeballs. Location work is an excellent career choice.
P.S. AI is going to reduce or replace many "knowledge worker" jobs like marketing and finance. Maybe even a lot of computer programming.
