the only art goal I have nowadays is to just finish more things, regardless of whether its the crappiest thing I made, or if its the best thing to ever be shown
Same here! I have too many drawings from last year that aren't finished. So far, I have 6 paintings that I've started this year, but only one is colored, so it's not looking too good 😅
My goal this is not "draw everyday" but more so "draw more consistently" because although drawing everyday makes for a good habit it also can lead to burning out quicker, which drawing 3 or 4 times a week doesn't do as much and you get some breaks in between days when you don't feel like drawing or when life gets in the way.
I feel like that's where I'm at like I want to draw but I'm not going to draw everyday like I used to especially when art to me is supposed to be a hobby. I feel like the only time I would do that is if I really want to and I find the pieces I'm working on are really fun lol XD
That's exactly what I did too! Last year I decided to limit my drawing sessions to 3 times per week. That way if I really want to draw more than just 3 days I can do that without pressure of drawing every day, but also if I were to feel a bit burnout at some point at least just drawing 3 times a week would allow me to keep the habit alive until I feel much better. Gotta say, it has done wonders on my drawing habits.
Yeah, this year I am planning on drawing two time or three times a week. And those days I am not drawing I am watching lessons and checking out other artworks and artist for inspiration and studies
The one thing about the goal of 'draw everyday' is to actually get into the habit of drawing regularly, if you aren't already. Sometimes people can get distracted by everyday life, and even if you have the time and energy to sit down and practice, you end up doing other things. At least I found it helpful for me to get into a mindset of 'oh, I have free time now, might as well draw.' But otherwise, I agree with you!
for me it's like training, you don't like the ideia of spending to much time drawing in the start but as everything else you train that will, I didn't draw everyday but now if a pass a day without drawing I get bored, it surely helped me a lot.
I luckily managed to get into this habit during my last year of highschool. Now I can easily sit down and draw something when ever I want (even if it looks like shit.) Problem now is having more than 2 hours to do so.
As a person who attempted to “draw everyday” and fail, questions life, got depressed, thought I was a loser and almost quit. This brought back the motivation to draw again.
I made the absolute best choice for myself in my art. I stopped pumping it up with hashtags, looking for validation from complete strangers. I am completely free from comparing myself to others and being frustrated by "being ignored." And I love my art even more now, and it's better than ever. I don't require randos on the internet to tell me I'm good enough anymore. Not to say I don't still have a lot of personal progress to make with my art, but I know now that it is Good Enough, and I am too.
I was an adult before this social media craze captured everyone so I don't feel that need for that outside validation. It really weirds me out, actually!! But lately I keep thinking maybe I should give it a try to see if it motivates me to draw more, complete more, perform more. I just fear becoming insecure from it. I also fear being pestered by the people I know personally to start doing pet portraits for them, or whatever.
My goal for this year is to simply start generating an income from art. Looking forward to getting my first commission. I spent most of 2021 with anatomy, figure drawing and clothing, so this year I want to learn composition and story telling.
Thats super cool! The things you spent time in 2021 doing is the same things in wanna spend This New Year doing to level up my art😃! Good luckk with ur art journey! (^~^)
Are you "marketing" your art work? (posting on instagram, stories, etc) letting people know you're available for comissions is a great way to start. It doesn't have to be anything laborious. People love getting their portraits done and so forth and it's a fast and easy way to start making some money and letting people see your work.
You don't have to draw everyday. Last year, I wanted to improve my figure drawing but most importantly to improve my eye. My figure drawing was decent and was backed up by anatomy, but it was still lacking. I did over 400 figure drawings over one month and I missed some days, but made up for it on other days. It was hard and fatiguing but it was different from draw everyday because it was very focused and specific. What did I learn or achieve? My figure drawing and eye leveled up significantly. Now I have no problems doing complex poses of figures standing, sitting, dynamic, lying down, or upside down. Am I perfect? Hell no, but I understand that it is a life long goal but I feel comfortable (for now) with my ability to render a figure in any pose even with extreme foreshortening.
im trying to improve my figure drawing right now! :) i would love to hear where you found your sources for material to draw if you would like to share because im always looking for more Good luck on your art journey
@@Uberkilltoecheese Sorry I didn't respond sooner. First, you can do this level upping through traditional or digital. If you're using traditional, buy a $20 US Dollar USB light table. How to use the light table if you're not using digital? First, save money on paper by buying printer/cartridge paper. Correct your proportion mistakes by placing a new sheet of paper over your initial drawing. Why? Instead of using an eraser, you can see your mistakes and correct that error with a new sheet of paper. You can do this digitally by using a new layer and by reducing the opacity of your initial sketch layer (like 20%). Honestly, I believe digital is faster to level up. You don't need an expensive Cintiq, you can buy a drawing tablet for $30-$50 which is more than good enough. OK for sources. I believe you should use the same model for about 50-100 sketches. Why? Because the familiarity with the proportions of the model will help you will with foreshortening and extreme foreshortening. Where to get pictures of the same model? I highly recommend Grafit Studio which has very economical photo packs. You can easily get 20% discounts through Ahmed Aldoori or Cosmic Spectrum (both great figure artists). Find some videos on YT and get the discount. If you prefer books, I highly recommend Visual Nude Pose books from Japan. They're not pornographic and have great models with poses that run the gamut from sitting, standing, lying down, etc... OK how to do this. Gesture drawings are easier and you should start with that. You can do thousands of gesture drawings in the same time as hundreds of figure drawings. If your anatomy knowledge isn't great, I highly recommend using construction lines from Loomis, Reilly, and others. The issue with using construction lines is that your characters and figures end up looking the same. The next step to build up your eye and sense of proportion is to just draw the figure using your eye. It won't be 100% but it can be 80%-90% which is more than good enough. Slowly draw the figure. If you're starting with your eyes, I highly recommend a proportional divider (Accurase). There are YT videos on how to use. Use it as much as possible, but eventually you won't need it anymore as you leveled up your eye. I recommend drawing the head last. Why? You can put a placeholder or even a neck, but one of the things you will end up correcting 90% of the time is the head. You either drew it too big or too small.
@@asimian8500 Thank you so much! I’ll definitely look into the model photo packs, have had great progress even with just some portrait drawings using the same figure so i can see that now. Will probably start it out digital since i got a drawing tablet recently as well. Appreciate you taking the time out to share the knowledge! 😊
@@Uberkilltoecheese Hey, no problem. We all need to share info. There should be no secrets in art. We're all on a journey to be the best version of ourselves. If I can save someone time, I'm all for it. The other thing I learned which could have saved me time is to create your own workflow, but don't do it in isolation. Learn from others, but make your unique technique for creating art. Take a little here; take a little there; And incorporate it into your workflow. And worry about style later. You should be a generalist and be able to do any style before zeroing in on your unique style. In fact, it will take place as your absorb techniques and styles from others. You don't even have to try. It comes. I primarily do digital work, but there is nothing like the feedback and precision of traditional tools. This is not to dissuade you. A $20 USB light table (size of a 13" iPad) gives you many of the benefits of digital with traditional tools. It's definitely not a binary case of either or. Both are great and both have their strengths and weaknesses.
@@asimian8500 I didn’t see this till now strange, but I agree! I’ve watched a number of videos on workflow so I’m keeping them in mind to save me some time down the road. And about style I completely agree, I’m mostly just learning the foundation and then style etc will come later with time. And for traditional it has a special feeling for sure, I doubt I can find that in digital, but they each come with their benefits so I’d like to have a wider breadth of knowledge and/or skill. Thanks again
my draw everyday goal is very lenient, if i just draw a circle that counts for the day. i'm more focused on building a habit than actually pumping out finished or even half-finished pieces every day
I used to love art, i was younger and had endless creative output, would sit and draw for hours on end every day and unfortunately focusing all your creative output on one thing every day drains it completely. You dont realise it but its an unhealthy habit to pick up on, because if it settles, then breaking it to gain inspiration (watch shows, play the games you WANT to make to learn what OTHERS are doing right) starts guilt tripping you into thinking youre not doing something productive. On the other hand if you keep going with 0 creative motivation, your art starts becoming samey, you dont really have a goal with what youre drawing. Daily drawing with a goal slowly becomes mindless daily doodles that dont really end up being something you like. Its just a very weird cycle. Take breaks everyone, consume art, look around you, draw in your head, imagine things, you dont always have to pick up the pencil and fill the blank page. Your mind needs time to replenish your creativity.
Yes, perfectly said. Art is only as good as what inspires it. I've been stuck in that loop as well , and its counterproductive. If you are drawing everyday there comes a point,(intermediate to advanced) where its not needed I find. The next level is sharpening your eye and observation skills, along with your influences to push your work forward.
The art goal I made had the idea of not overworking myself to the point of burnout, I simply wanted to draw consistently, NOT everyday. I basically just draw whatever whenever I feel like, usually spanning 2 days everytime.
I did the draw everyday goal last year, and while it is unnecessary at times, overall it pushed me to do more work than I otherwise would have. Also it really solidified my habit of drawing every morning. On the flip side it sucks when you get a hand injury lol
My goal is just to do more art for myself. Too much of what we do is targeted to a goal and not enough is just a pure expression of self, I intend to change that for myself this year.
I started writing a Light Novel a few months ago. I'm starting to get very serious about it and i'm putting more and more hours into it each day. I'd love to be able to draw, some of the illustrations & some characters myself but i really struggle to keep the motivation to pratice my drawings regularly. I always have in mind the "final GOAL" of me making my own characters design. But when i see my day to day pratice and don't see any significant improvement, i start getting a bit discouraged, laziness start kicking, and then i'll skip my drawing practice again for a few days or weeks before getting into again.
My art goals are essentially to just finish at least one full painting with a background each month. I'd like to gain a better understanding of how to construct backgrounds and character interaction with backgrounds.
As someone who is only now getting into drawing my goal for the year is to be able to make one drawing that I can look at and feel like it’s complete/finished
The drawing everyday goal is definitely a self fulfilling failure type thing, because of course there will be a day where you forget or are too busy. But also I notice whenever I miss enough days I start to feel a little empty inside, because drawing is kind of my processing tool as well as a study. So I think waking up each day and thinking “I want to draw today” is helpful because the goal resets every day and isn’t concrete at all. Something that also helps is thinking of a medium you wanna work with if I feel art blocked. If I don’t feel like drawing that day, I switch up the tool from pencil to oil pastel or something.
You're right. The "bE ALwaYS pRoDUCtive if yOU waNT to MaKE iT" 🤪. Honestly, this bullshit caused a massive burn out in my drawing routine. And don't get me wrong, but YT played a big role in that. I watched too many "inspirational art pep talks" to the point that I wasn't inspired anymore. 😅
I do draw every day, but I will make sure to take a day off if I need. I only draw every day because I genuinely enjoy it. I don't make sure to draw for a certain amount of time, and there are even some days where I just doodle a little. Sometimes, when I intend to finish a piece, I break it over the span of a couple days. Doing it all in one sitting can be very exhausting.
I made the mistake of doing a “Never miss a day” challenge. I failed on day 3 (hahaha). Now I’m trying for a “do ABC by the end of the year” in a way only I can measure like you said. Thanks Josh
So grateful for this vid - the last two years I had those unrealistic more followers on Insta, creating art every day goals ... and it was so frustrating - so yes, I just do what I can do with my additional regular job and simply picked two goal for the entire year
My goals for this year are to work on color and anatomy. I’ve struggled a lot staying focused on these concepts, but I sometimes get distracted from the flow of several unfinished pieces. This year it’ll be different, I’ll be watching more long process videos to help guide me on my drawings and use proper references that will benefit me and help find my style.
Honestly, it feels great to hear someone say that it's okay to not keep a goal that HAS to be maintained every day, like drawing. For me, I spend hours working on a new piece & I don't get as much free time to draw during weekdays because of uni classes & studies. Thanks for voicing this out! This year, I plan on trying something new & working on my weaknesses in art, along with enjoying the process for each of my pieces ❤️
My only art goal these days is a quote from an artist friend of mine who streams. When they sign off, they say "Keep making good art, keep making bad art, because the bad art makes you better at the good art." Just keep making art!
Yes! My goal is to earn an income with my art, whether that’s through an industry job or as a freelance illustrator. And I’ve got my metric for measuring my goal. Let’s do this!
The only goal I set for myself as someone who started painting 6 months ago is to redo the painting that I did on New Years Eve again at the end of the year and to do a painting for every unique game I play this year. Focusing on media which I am invested enough to spend my free time playing is a solid way to keep my interest and study many different styles of design, and the thing I love about video games is so many have screenshot modes now so you can find interesting composition and lighting as a reference so much easier. Excited to see how far I can get in 18 months of self-teaching and study.
Honestly I think one of my goals for my art practice is not to rush myself. Sometimes there is this internal and external pressure to getting better ASAP. I feel like instead of feeling like I need to hurry up, I need to enjoy and be present in the process of a steady and healthy improvement so I can see my faults.
Awesome to hear your goals Josh! Mine are mostly to work on art that I genuinely am interested in rather than just fanart/ pretty portraits to please the algorithm. Lots of success with my print shop and commissions at the moment so gotta work hard!
My goal’s to kinda reconstruct my workspace into something that I feel completely lost in and can feel nothing but comfortable when doing a job. It’s kind of plain and a little messy for now. I can still work but it can feel more like… well “work” than just drawing.
My art goal does involve the "draw everyday", mine is to "try to draw for at least 5 minutes a day". I don't pressure myself to draw, or get upset if I miss a day, but I want to have it as a goal so that I'm more inclined to draw during my freetime. In one way it could also be reframed as "draw an hour a week". Overall I wish I drew more. I have a weekly art session I attend for 2 hours, but I don't draw much other-times since I work on other creative outlets more.
1st January : posting an artwork 3rd January : posting an artwork 4th until 30th January : artblock attacking my brain, and I lost all of my motivation🙂
I actually did draw everyday of 2019, this was mainly for me to develop digital art, just 45 mins a day and to make sure I didn’t get distracted, I shared the journey on Instagram on a new account and it grew really well and way more than my regular account that I have had for many years, I don’t recommend it to people but for some that asked, I just said draw when you get inspired and make sure you practise correctly, no burnout. My goals for this year are to develop landscape, character and creature designs with entertainment career as a focus
I like this so much! I was already applying theses rules to myself, but to see a famous artist sharing them is just awesome - Like you, I like to call them goals to reach through the year and not resolutions, so thank you for the video
My original goal was to draw every day in order to improve quicker with consistency, but I changed it to just practicing every day and then actually drawing when I’m in the right mindset to do so. Now, I just do about 30-35 minutes of figure drawing practice and then 1-2 hours of anatomy practice. Consistency is key and I like to believe that focusing on the basics and building upon my foundations will be better for me rather than racking my brain to actually draw something. Thankfully I learned not to let myself feel like crap if I miss a day or two or three or four etc. because you are right, life is very unpredictable and anything can happen. In the end, I’m not a pro, so I don’t know how effective this routine I’ve set for myself will be by the end of 2022. We’ll see? 🤷♀️
I just recently stumbled upon your channel and I like going through your videos because I really want to go back to drawing again. I still have a lot to cover but I'm glad that I actually found a channel that answers much of what I need to know. Thank you for making these videos!
This video gave some advice to set my on goals where i could promise to achieve them and also having fun doing my passion or do whatever i like even if i feel like drawing or not. This was helpful video, thx Josh.
Very solid video! I really agree on your earlier point about making your goals be decided by you and not an outside source. For me, I never posted my art on social media before even though I have been (very slowly) learning for the past 6 years on and off. I made a Twitter account and posted some stuff on and off for about 5 months. None of them got any likes and didn't pass above 8 views each but that's ok because this is just a hobby meant for me to enjoy. The other day, however, one of my drawings "blew up" with a grand total of 20 likes and one whole follower. I smiled a little at that and got back to work faster than ever on my next piece. As soon as I posted it I lost the follower and went back to no one seeing or liking my art. I then spent the next 3 days sleeping 3-4 hours a night so I had more time to attempt to speed up my learning to somehow attract more people. All of this is, like you have said here, not a healthy long-term mindset. I'm going back to being a slow but gradual workhorse that maybe posts one or two pieces online a year. I don't like the feeling of chasing internet points even though it got me good for a second there.
2021 was so huge with my entire shut down of social media platform. I level up so fast at anatomy, value and especially composition. Now I would like to speedrun Blender to help me on complex scene and environment, and start to develop my "real" style. And in 2023, hope to make my first dollar with my Art.
I’d love to draw every day if I could, but my art goal is to try to finish my art quicker & not take hours working on a small detail that people won’t even notice it anyways. I started timing myself to see how long it does take me to finish a project & see if I can do it quicker next time.
Happy New Year! My main art goals this year are to have shop openings every major holiday (as determined by me, I picked about 7 of them), to make two RUclips videos every month, and to experiment more in my artwork.
My goal this year is to make at least 10 youtube videos. Spend 2 hours on learning to draw human figures, portraits, scenes ect. I also want to finish my first art series. I believe all of these are achievable. Just need to stay consistent and not beat myself up.
My goal is to draw more this year, but not everyday, just more since I'm doing art course now and art for a game at the same time, and I want to keep making personal illustrations.
I temper my “draw every day” goal with just focusing on not kissing 2 days in a row. Even if that means drawing every other day, it keeps me motivated without being overwhelmed
I drew everyday last year. It’s not too bad if you have extra time in your hands. Depending on your life obligations I don’t recommend this at all. It doesn’t make you that better anyway. Work smarter not harder!
This, in my opinion is great advice. I also never wanted my success to be tailored to any one else, to where other individual's could make or break my work.
great gotta be honest here, I was about to set one of them as my art goals 😬 the one that I wanna master something altho I didn't thought about it the way you did. for all my drawing years, I've never started or thought about the important fundamentals that I finally realized what I've been doing wrong. I don't wanna master fundamentals that I'm the best at it, I just wanna see slight improvements from the last year me. but other than that I want my art goal is to finally get into practicing in digital art and to be confident to finally post online. both aren't something I'm planning immediately bcuz I need resources and being mentally prepared but I plan by the end of 2022, I finally have started the starting point to my dream of being a comic artist.
My goal for the last 3 years has been to finish something lol. I think this will be my year! I step away for months at a time on paintings. But I realize I paint for myself and I'm not driven by money. So I started going to school last semester for graphic design and it's been making me produce, be creative, and actually finish! I like how quickly I can create in this new medium.
This is a helpful reminder. I've been very guilty of setting terrible unreachable goals in the past! These are some good guidelines for setting ones that aren't terrible!
Concerning Art goals: There are three courses I want to do; First one is an anatomy course I can do at my own pace and will start on February. Second one has to do with backgrounds, I feel I don't usually do backgrounds enough and I know I need a certain learning environment to at least be pushed to do them before I naturally incorporate them in my work. Unfortunately I missed registration time for the last batch so I'm aiming for the next time registration opens this year. And the last one of them is seasonal and pretty expensive as well so I'm saving up and building a portfolio for it, hopefully I'll make it for fall registration; if I don't make it to this one this year it's not a big deal. I too want to travel, there are a few events and places I want to see this year; already started saving for one of the trips and will do a dance to the gods so that COVID doesn't get in the way. Like you said, life is humbling and if COVID does get in the way then there are plenty of other stuff to do. I want to improve on my workspace, lately it's been feeling a bit constricting and I've been looking into desk options it's just there are so many it's going to take a while to choose. Fitness has been something I've been keeping up at from last year, sometimes it's hard and I feel lazy but gotta push through it's always worth it! Keep it up Josh
I was drawing everyday and felt terrible, until I got covid and was sick all throughout December and focused on recovering up until today. Art became something I feared and loathed but watching this video genuinely helped with the feeling. It's easy to fall off and be unmotivated sometimes the goals we set just don't work and can put you in a worst spot. Hope everyone is having a good day and gain the ability to overcome whatever is tearing them down 💕
I'm actually gonna set a goal for myself to be more outgoing and see new things and reconnect with my friends. artistically I want to simply draw consistently. a few sketches here and there for the week. y'know like keep the engine warm thing.
my goals this year is mostly improve myself by ridding myself from perfectionism mindset since its one of the main things that is holding me back from improving further. Finish projects i haven't finished due to not liking them or thinking they are boring, and focusing more on studying on things i am struggling on drawing.
Totally agree with this! Im trying to become the best artist that I can be and that means watching videos like this one and trying to take onboard the lessons you and other artist put out onto youtube and hopefully Ill get a little better everyday! I draw a lot, but not everyday as Im kind scared of burn out. Sorry this a long ass comment!
I've been looking forward to learn how to actualy paint and to make more finished work . Maybe, if school don't tear me apart i whould like to take one of my projects out of the paper. And of course i need to develop a better exercise routine.
The thing I learned with my own journey with art, is sometimes you do need days away from doing art, days where you can just focused on yourself, and your emotions, maybe even treat yourself with a good time, good art progress is only as good as ones optimism towards themselves. If you don't have a good self image in general, then your art is unfortunately doomed to fail. Self care is always important.
i think, necessity might be a huge factor to take into account before you set goals. For example for me i needed to draw every single day and look for a stable good job with my drawing to sustain myself and my family, i set this goal on March 2021 and i had committed to that until today, and pressure and necessity got me do it. So be realistic about your goals, don't waste time when you know you have to work.
Good points which apply to not only art but everything around. Thought I'll leave a comment because I love your videos and enjoy them vastly but never leave a trace other than a thumbs-up. Thank you for your content, love your work! ❤️
Happy 2022 to you Ergo Josh. 🎆 My goal for this year is to see how many pieces of complete finished art I can produce and see how much I improve in the different areas in my pieces. 🙂
was immediately called out by your "draw every day" mention. I have the habit to obsess over my art and go through bursts of "i must improve now, i have this guide that i will follow exactly" - and I get burnt out. Last time it was so bad that just thinking of a certain part of the art fundamentals gives me anxiety now. So now I'm back to the part where I just try to have fun, not "grind in just the right way to maximize your time"
My goal this year is to draw 12 (one a month) full body artworks! I get so intimidated by anatomy that I couldn't bring myself to draw much last year. I want to overcome that, especially after being inspired by Ergo Josh's improvement through the years!
My short term art goal is to feel less awkward holding a stylus, and feeling comfortable while drawing. Mid term is to notice improvement with my line confidence and overall drawing improvement. Long term is to finish line art characters where the anatomy looks accurate.
Literally all 3 of the horrible goals you mentioned were the base for my goals last year LOL, definitely happier im heading in a better direction this time around
Omg thank you Josh, drawing every day is just so over rated in my opinion. Every time I tried it, it just made me feel horrible because I can't ever keep up with it, and seeing so many people encouraging this and saying "if you want to get good, draw every day" made my motivation get as low as the rug on my bedroom floor. So I'll make myself some more reasonable goals this year based on what I can actually do and feel good about myself. So thank you so much 🙏
The best art goal to have is to master a certain skill, the best thing one can to to an art career or hobby is to add something to foundation. Another great thing one can do is try surpass one's last master piece or try to adopt a subject one has't been drawing. These goals are doable and accumplish things that matters.
As always, I love watching your videos ever since I found your channel I definitely feel like I learn new things here just when I thought I knew everything there is lol
My Goal this year is to gradually finish the drawabox challenge as best as I can. The minimum I've set for myself is at least halfway at the end of this year ^^. I also want to learn video editing so for that one I've set the goal to at least have two videos made in the next four months.
My first Art goal for 2022 is to establish more backgrounds in my art, since often times my characters are just standing in a white void. It would primarily serve as a method of adding context for the character, and the kind of world they live in. The second goal is to refine my character Art in terms of Anatomy. I can occasionally get some solid original designs, but more often than not they fall short due to the lack of consistency in proportion whether it be long legs, short arms, or uneven eyes. If I can get in a good place with proportions I’ll be satisfied, nothing pro level, just my kind of level. My third goal is to add more complexity to my characters in terms of posing, not just standing around in a neutral pose, but making it feel like they have personality with the way they are angled.
One of my main goals for this year is getting better at anatomy and lineart since all I do is portraits. Already seeing some results but it's a long journey ahead.
Thank you so much for making this video. There's so many goals I made that are similar to what you've discussed and now I'm able to re-evaluate and decide for myself what's the best way to reach those goals without it being unrealistic. Also love your videos btw. I've been binge watching them all December as I recently subscribed🙂
My art goal for this year is to draw every day for a minimum of 10 min each day and I intend to stick with it. Reason being that... I'm lazy af. I want to get better at art but I don't have the habit of grabbing my tablet or a pen and paper and just drawing. And developing that habbit has proven quite difficult over the years. I would constantly delay everything ("I'll do it tomorrow") and barely make any kind of progress, if any at all, as a result. I joined an evening art school 3 years ago which has helped me a lot. I have now decided it's high time to take the next step. The school alone won't be enough. If I don't take it more seriously and put in the effort at home I won't get anywhere. So now I'm drawing every day. It's only been 12 days but so far so good. Obviously if something happens that prevents my from drawing on a particular day like you said then so be it. Nothing I can do about that. I won't consider my goal to be ruined because something happened beyond my control. The most important thing is that I'm now busy with art every day, usually for about an hour. It's not a lot but it's an improvement. I'm thinking of adding another goal which is to complete a drawing each week and upload it. I want to complete a few works before that though to get confident with the workflow.
Yo wassup ergo... Things you've touched on this video are very informative and understandable Having to work for a specific company or firm seems to much of work due to too many people also having to also work to get there and some how you have to stand out.. Just end up not being pick.. As you also said it might seem childish but its the fact you've put so much work in just be turned... Personally my goal is to at least better myself with figure drawing and colour then adventure into a very expressive composed art
My art goals this year do involve aiming for producing art to an audience, but the difference is that is needs to be what I want. For example, this year I want to continue (which is key, cause i'm already doing it) pursuing digital illustration techniques and pieces to set up commissions for the future. For me, this is a positive thing (even if the commissions fail) because I get to focus my relation to the art process and explore what about sci-fi/fantasy makes me excited enough to draw if for other people. I work full time, so the outcome of the commissions is largely irrelevant for me, it's mostly can I focus enough to set a product up that I can say in a my art journey, "i did that for a few years".
One of my art goals this year is to not draw faces 🤣 I tend to spend more than half the time on each artwork just to "perfect" the face and ignore everything else, so this year I'm focusing more on anatomy by not drawing faces 😬👍
Ooh, that’s kinda cool. I’m trying to do something similar by drawing more art that doesn’t feature humans at all. I focus so much on the characters that I don’t do much with anything else, and I want to change that.
i would still recommend you set aside time to practice faces even though you already know how to. skills can deteriorate if you aren’t using them, i would know. i went through a period of not drawing animals at all so i could draw humans instead. now, while i know how to draw people, im re learning how to draw animals because all those skills went to waste when i decided to stop drawing them. sorry if this was too wordy lmao. tldr: keep drawing faces
Hope my inspiration and motivation to be an artist comes back, I need to keep in mind everyone starts somewhere and the process will be slow instead of being good enough immediately

the only art goal I have nowadays is to just finish more things, regardless of whether its the crappiest thing I made, or if its the best thing to ever be shown
Same! To finish something and learn from it!
Me too! I wrote on my whiteboard “I would rather make something crap today than make nothing at all” and it’s been going in the right direction
Haha.....same lol.
Same here! I have too many drawings from last year that aren't finished. So far, I have 6 paintings that I've started this year, but only one is colored, so it's not looking too good 😅
Same. Seems like a growing trend, I thought I was the only one
Absolutely agree
And those days I am not drawing I am watching lessons and checking out other artworks and artist for inspiration and studies
fr!! a little bit ago i was drawing constantly everyday then i would burn out and feel so depressed about it
The one thing about the goal of 'draw everyday' is to actually get into the habit of drawing regularly, if you aren't already. Sometimes people can get distracted by everyday life, and even if you have the time and energy to sit down and practice, you end up doing other things. At least I found it helpful for me to get into a mindset of 'oh, I have free time now, might as well draw.' But otherwise, I agree with you!
for me it's like training, you don't like the ideia of spending to much time drawing in the start but as everything else you train that will, I didn't draw everyday but now if a pass a day without drawing I get bored, it surely helped me a lot.
haha love your profile pic so nostalgic
Also it lowers the bar for expectations which is good if wanting to be perfect makes you freeze and not do any art.
Yeah this was my reason for this goal in 2020! It worked cause drawing is natural for me now!
I luckily managed to get into this habit during my last year of highschool.
Now I can easily sit down and draw something when ever I want (even if it looks like shit.)
Problem now is having more than 2 hours to do so.
As a person who attempted to “draw everyday” and fail, questions life, got depressed, thought I was a loser and almost quit. This brought back the motivation to draw again.
Don't give up, you'll get there, you got all it takes
Make the goal easily attainable. Set it as a goal to draw 6 minutes a day. We all can find 6 minutes in a day to draw.
That’s so lovely to hear- sounds like you are in a healthy place in your life :)
I'm looking just for that too ... I was planning to do It on Fiver! What platform are you going to use ?
Are you "marketing" your art work? (posting on instagram, stories, etc) letting people know you're available for comissions is a great way to start. It doesn't have to be anything laborious. People love getting their portraits done and so forth and it's a fast and easy way to start making some money and letting people see your work.
Same! I want to make an income with my art :)
I'm doing the same thing, best of luck to you, and may we all find comfort in our art 😊🎭
:) i would love to hear where you found your sources for material to draw if you would like to share because im always looking for more
Good luck on your art journey
Well said. A practical approach to an ambiguous subject. It’s almost like we romanticize claiming the goals over achieving them. Preciate this 👊
The art goal I made had the idea of not overworking myself to the point of burnout, I simply wanted to draw consistently, NOT everyday. I basically just draw whatever whenever I feel like, usually spanning 2 days everytime.
How often you posting an artwork in a week?
I did the draw everyday goal last year, and while it is unnecessary at times, overall it pushed me to do more work than I otherwise would have. Also it really solidified my habit of drawing every morning.
On the flip side it sucks when you get a hand injury lol
My goal is just to do more art for myself. Too much of what we do is targeted to a goal and not enough is just a pure expression of self, I intend to change that for myself this year.
Art goals this year:
-improve my art
-get familiar with CSP and procreate
Manageable, I think 🤔
I started writing a Light Novel a few months ago. I'm starting to get very serious about it and i'm putting more and more hours into it each day. I'd love to be able to draw, some of the illustrations & some characters myself but i really struggle to keep the motivation to pratice my drawings regularly. I always have in mind the "final GOAL" of me making my own characters design. But when i see my day to day pratice and don't see any significant improvement, i start getting a bit discouraged, laziness start kicking, and then i'll skip my drawing practice again for a few days or weeks before getting into again.
Best luck to you. Improvement can be slow at times but being able to see mistakes and flaws in your own art often can be a sign of Improvement
I learned well from this video. Thank you
I do draw every day, but I will make sure to take a day off if I need. I only draw every day because I genuinely enjoy it. I don't make sure to draw for a certain amount of time, and there are even some days where I just doodle a little. Sometimes, when I intend to finish a piece, I break it over the span of a couple days. Doing it all in one sitting can be very exhausting.
I was already drawing everyday since the year started well mostly completed sketches to finish up later...
This is a great list, I had to learn to not aspire for these the hard way, all aspiring artists should take these points to heart!
Yes! My goal is to earn an income with my art, whether that’s through an industry job or as a freelance illustrator. And I’ve got my metric for measuring my goal. Let’s do this!
My goal is to get better at drawing, manually and digitally!
Excited to see how far I can get in 18 months of self-teaching and study.
my goal is to make an NSFW art project that would cost my morality.
Nice
same bruv!
Poggers same
drawing every single day just a recipe for a burnout
Honestly I think one of my goals for my art practice is not to rush myself. Sometimes there is this internal and external pressure to getting better ASAP. I feel like instead of feeling like I need to hurry up, I need to enjoy and be present in the process of a steady and healthy improvement so I can see my faults.
Awesome to hear your goals Josh! Mine are mostly to work on art that I genuinely am interested in rather than just fanart/ pretty portraits to please the algorithm. Lots of success with my print shop and commissions at the moment so gotta work hard!
My goal this year is to improve my anatomy and story telling so i can write my own Manga/Comic.
1st January : posting an artwork
3rd January : posting an artwork
4th until 30th January : artblock attacking my brain, and I lost all of my motivation🙂
I love how you simplify things, Josh. You are an inspiration to me. :)
You're like an artist close friend that helps honestly and chill. Peace!
Happy New Year! My main art goals this year are to have shop openings every major holiday (as determined by me, I picked about 7 of them), to make two RUclips videos every month, and to experiment more in my artwork.
Thank you so much for sharing your goals with us. This was very insightful
My goal this year is to make at least 10 youtube videos. Spend 2 hours on learning to draw human figures, portraits, scenes ect. I also want to finish my first art series. I believe all of these are achievable. Just need to stay consistent and not beat myself up.
Ergojosh, your advice is always sound, sensible and helpful. Much appreciated. Thanks.
I don’t have any goals. I just do things spontaneously with vague intent that relies on my current circumstances.
That is excellent advice. Thanks for the video.
His voice is so soothing.....i just keep melting while listening to him💜🌼
This is a helpful reminder. I've been very guilty of setting terrible unreachable goals in the past! These are some good guidelines for setting ones that aren't terrible!
Concerning Art goals:
There are three courses I want to do;
First one is an anatomy course I can do at my own pace and will start on February.
Hope everyone is having a good day and gain the ability to overcome whatever is tearing them down 💕
I'm actually gonna set a goal for myself to be more outgoing and see new things and reconnect with my friends. artistically I want to simply draw consistently. a few sketches here and there for the week. y'know like keep the engine warm thing.
ergo I love you man, your tips, tutorials and basically all your content inspires me
my goals this year is mostly improve myself by ridding myself from perfectionism mindset since its one of the main things that is holding me back from improving further.
6:33 THATS MY BDAY
I love it! You really need to start podcast! It really help me alot to improve everyday life as an artist wish,, you get better days man keep going!
As always, I love watching your videos ever since I found your channel
I definitely feel like I learn new things here just when I thought I knew everything there is lol
For the past 2 weeks my goal was "be better at drawing", now i want to choose better goals.
thx for the video.
Thank you. This is a very helpful video.
My Goal this year is to gradually finish the drawabox challenge as best as I can. The minimum I've set for myself is at least halfway at the end of this year ^^. I also want to learn video editing so for that one I've set the goal to at least have two videos made in the next four months.
I like your idea of not relying on outside influences in gaging your goals
I took notes lol, cuz its somewhat relate to your goal.
Would you mind if i take a note?
Oh no a matter of fact we have the same goal only on the anatomy part.
@@AHZUR You are more than welcome to
@@Fi_Sci_ Thanks.
Great advice. Subscribed. Thanks
One of my main goals for this year is getting better at anatomy and lineart since all I do is portraits. Already seeing some results but it's a long journey ahead.
For me it's the exact reverse :D I'm so excited to make more portraits this year
Thank you so much for making this video. There's so many goals I made that are similar to what you've discussed and now I'm able to re-evaluate and decide for myself what's the best way to reach those goals without it being unrealistic.
Also love your videos btw. I've been binge watching them all December as I recently subscribed🙂
Mine is beefing up my anatomy. Male anatomy to be specific. I'm planning on doing a 30 days of male figure study. After my hand heals.
This video was extremely helpful for me, thank you for sharing this
My art goal for this year is to draw every day for a minimum of 10 min each day and I intend to stick with it.
Things you've touched on this video are very informative and understandable
Having to work for a specific company or firm seems to much of work due to too many people also having to also work to get there and some how you have to stand out..
One of my art goals this year is to not draw faces 🤣
I tend to spend more than half the time on each artwork just to "perfect" the face and ignore everything else, so this year I'm focusing more on anatomy by not drawing faces 😬👍
@@kh14 thanks for the heads up! I wont stop completely because I love to doodle anime characters when im bored 😅 but I'll still keep this in mind 👍
Girl saaaame... like I hyper-focus on the face but ignore the rest of the body😂
@@Laura-Yu I feel you 😭
i suggest reading the book Atomic Habits its a wonderful breakdown on forming the habits that allow you to achieve the goals
James Clear's newsletter is great too!
One of my art goals this year is to make more colored/finished illustrations. Great video by the way, as always!
Hope my inspiration and motivation to be an artist comes back,
I need to keep in mind everyone starts somewhere and the process will be slow instead of being good enough immediately
