    1) When you finish a piece, it looks like someone else painted it
    2) Art you previously thought was impossible, legendary, etc is less spectacular.
    3) New artists/artwork starts to interest you, that you didn't notice before.
    4) Your art is less professional overall, but gets more attention from professionals and peers.
    5) It's much easier for you to know when a piece is finished. You can keep track of your progress.
    6) You are more concerned with how your work is fulfilling it's purpose, rather than overall attention.
    7) You feel the need to ask for critique when you feel "too" comfortable with your work.

Same here, also a self taught srtist. Honestly, I'm losing motivation rn and just procrastinate on doing art related stuff. It just feels like I'm not going anywhere further and It feels monotonous. I don't know if I'm doing anything right.
In fact, I don't even find motivation in doing things anymore. Nothing interests me now, and I get overly drowsy when I try to do something even though I'm not tired just a few minutes ago.

@@pivotalpancake5454 You got this pimp. In those times of low motivation it might be good to set a time , like 30 mins - where you do your thing every day for 30 mins. You might find that motivation comes back once you get started , if not just call it off after your 30 mins. Hope you feeling more up to it soon. Just remember if you commit to doing a little bit daily even when you're not feelin' it, you'll probably be pretty happy with yourself that you stuck to it.

@@partingmist8550 Thanks for the advice... But although I think my problem is is that I don't really know if I'm even progressing or doing the right thing anymore. Since obviously things take time before they improve, but I'm kinda anxious that I'm getting nowhere at all.
Doesn't help that I'm mostly alone as an artist, and I don't really have people to ask advice or help from aside from public YT comments which is rare. Doing 30 minutes is a good way to start that creation drive in your brain, but really I'm just too afraid to flinch anymore because I feel like every decision I make is just wrong.
      Thanks for your advice though.

mainly what he is trying to deeply explain to us as his audience and community is that the expression of the art is the journey. It basically can be certified that art is the “feelings” ❤️ basically just from the “heart” 💕 “The Heart Is All About The Deepest Moments Of Expression, that you as an individual has went through in life.

Another thing I’ve noticed is I’ll have long periods of no art. Like a month or two it’ll just be very loose doodles of eyes or arms, but not much sketches that could be final pieces of art. But then, out of nowhere, I’ll get this surge of improvement where I stare at my art and be like “I DID THAT??”
Best feeling in the world. So if you’re going through a massive block in anything, the best thing you can do (unless you’re on a deadline) is let it run its course, because then you’ll jump.

I stopped drawing half a year ago, I felt I didn’t improve despite trying my hardest to follow numbers of tutorials. I used to love drawing in anime style but it didn’t resonate with me like it use to, so I thought I was getting worse. 2 days ago, I picked up my Apple Pencil again, chose a brush I personally like, decided to draw whatever comes to mind and oh gosh, it felt like my brain connected with my hand! I felt the joy I once had a few years ago while drawing, I drew characters I’ve never drawn before. Just like you said, it was like looking at other artist’s art. It wasn’t complete anime style which was shocking to me because I’ve never thought of drawing other than said style. I thought,” woah, this really came from me” I felt proud and I want to explore more. I guess I was too dependent on references, cared too much what majority likes seeing, didn’t want to budge from my old ways and wanting to make everything perfect. I hope I can keep this up, improve and someday having a style I personally love!

My journey is moving backwards and forwards; I could be progressing quite rapidly one day and lose all knowledge and skill the next(as if all that time studying and practicing never occurred). As my eyes improves in noticing mistakes, my hand lags behind by a tremendous amount.
In fact, that’s how I’d describe my art journey: it’s lagging.

    • @pong6377
      @pong6377 2 года назад +25

Same bro. But I think that isn't really a bad thing because being able to discern between what you did right and wrong means that you actually understood the concept that you're trying to practice. And once you have that understanding, the only way forward is to really sit down and practice it. What you described as "lagging" is a consequence of the imbalance between what you understand and what you can do. If you're like me, it's a little bit harder to actually draw and apply the concepts because I think that my brain associates understanding with actually being able to draw or it's afraid to practice the concepts because they might not be in line with how it imagined it to look like.

Sometimes I despise my process and feel like I don't know a thing, and other times it moves so smoothly and I have such a good time doing it that I try another and I lose it again. I don't draw frequently and I do things at my own pace to avoid stress but I have to do it when my brain allows me. It gets really frustrating.

I’ve been noticing some of these things with myself lately and it feels amazing, and I’ve noticed some of these things have been coming in cycles, stronger every time. For example, a year ago I was feeling pretty good in my art, and then I realized I had a ton to learn and was stuck in a low for a while, and just recently I’ve been feeling really good again and I’m so happy with my improvement - so much so I’ve started to tackle things like perspective and environment studies. It’s an incredible feeling, and to anyone out there who is struggling and feeling like they aren’t improving, trust me, keep at it and make the art you love and you’ll see yourself improve! I wish the best for you! And thanks for the amazing video Josh!

I love when art RUclipsrs make videos about “signs your art is improving” instead of “how to improve your art” that I’ve seen everywhere now 😭💕
One of the things I remind a few beginners is “look back once in a while.” You sometimes don’t know what you improved on until you look at your older art. Y’know how some artists would express disgust and cringe from looking at their older art? Try seeing that as a good thing, because it shows how far you’ve gotten. In looking back, you can also see some art you made that while the artstyle then is crude or not great in comparison, there’s some charm to it.

I’m definitely feeling like I’m nearing the stage of “knowing when it’s done”, although first I have to contend with a more prevalent issue: “am I done or am I just tired?” After I finished this video I was thinking about uploading a study that I’d spent the better part of the month (where free time from work allows) working on. I hit a point where I felt like I couldn’t really do much else for it and took a break. Looking at it now, I see that it can improve in some ways and may need an update to my process.
So I guess that’s what I’ve learned so far: knowing when to take a break and when to come back.

    • @maryagrimm8412

The whole art style thing has always bugged me because I feel like young artists don't find their own art style because of it. If one improves on their own pace and draws what they are attracted to, then their art is going to naturally develop a distinct style and personality ---- that is what art style should mean. Instead, people decide they want to have a ghibli style or a Tim Burton style and they only draw in this hyper-specific way which means that they never learn anything about posing, details, color, shading, or even their own personal preferences; they just get better at copying the art style.

Yes please, a "beginner's" procreate course would be 100% appreciated!
I put beginner between quotation marks, mostly because with these kinds of programs (also photoshop etc.) it's usually quite easy to get started, work out the basics, and go from there, while missing out on all the tips that really make you work effectively and quite well (think layers and masks etc.) are less obvious simply because they're functionalities that don't exist in drawing on paper, and you really need to know what their purpose is before you can use them.

I used to HEAVILY doubt anything I did. I've fully stopped doing that in 2021. A character I created for a comic I drew as a kid, I had started to do his final redesign in 2015. I was further inspired by a lot of military clothing, sci-fi, cyberpunk ect (also my Gunbreaker in 2019). I gave him my friend's haircut (he passed away in 2013, and loved the character). Fast forward to summer of 2021, I see the Guardians of the Galaxy game, and the way Star Lord was designed, looked quite a bit like my character. I got excited, made me feel pretty good. I later even got to talk to the artist, and he was so damn cool. I told him how seeing that made me feel.
Then when Final Fantasy Stranger of Paradise was released, some of my friends, and my teachers thought I did the characters. I no longer doubt myself, and have fallen in love with drawing again, and want to finish this project I was actually encouraged to get back into, when I was in the hospital last summer.

usually something I do to encourage myself to draw is to mention it on my calender. I'll write a simple "Drew" with a checkmark beside it, and looking back at a month and being able to visually see how many times I practiced and worked throughout a month has a big impact. recently, I had just challenged myself to draw every day for as long as I could, but on the 20th day, I finally broke. it led to me feeling like a failure, and that I would never improve, but then after taking a week-long break and trying again, I drew something that really described what you said here in the video: "you feel like someone else drew what you just created", and it helped me to see that I WAS improving. what else has helped me see that is the way I draw my own characters; my approach to heads and torsos has become different and more focused on clearer, box-like shapes to maintain an understanding of depth, where before I was more inclined to fall into getting too confused by my own messy sketches.
thank you for making this video, wish you all the best

I've struggled with this feeling of not improving ever since I finished community college with an associate in arts. Now I'm at a four-year university where I'm surrounded by other art students who have a lot more experience in different fields than I do. For years, I've just sketched on paper or in Photoshop.
Now I'm about to start my last year in college before I get my bachelor's in animation, and I feel nowhere close to being ready. Eventually I have to start on my senior project, and then I have to apply to studios for internships and full-time jobs. I feel this immense pressure that I have to get better and that I cannot afford to relax or I will not succeed; once I graduate, that's it. Luckily, I live with my parents and my college is relatively close so it's not like I really need a job. Right now, I think I should just focus on school, but I feel like that's still not enough. I'm also teaching myself other things when I should be teaching myself what actually matters. For example, learning watercolors when I should be learning 3D modelling and animation.
I don't know what my priorities should be at this point. There is just so much to do and so little time to do it in. I feel like I'm just bullshitting my way through life and not really taking it seriously.

I think losing my ‘that’ll do’ attitude has been one for sure. In the past I’ve noticed details were off and just figured few people would notice, or that it was beyond my level of skill to correct it. Nowadays I go back and rework those details, which leaves me way happier with the end result.
Also, making scenes more dynamic or ‘feel right’ instead of just assembling characters in a flat kind of way that just about meets the brief.

2:06 - finished painting looks like it's done by someone else
3:16 - art you previously thought legendary is now less spectacular
4:18 - new artists/artworks interest you now that you didn't notice before
6:28 - your art becomes less popular but gets more attention from pros and peers
8:08 - it's easier for you to know when a piece is finished
9:19 - you care more about purpose over attention

Hit or miss, not very accurate, still nice video tho.

Another sign of improvement I noticed is that I can now start to define my comfort zone & try to get out of it by doing studies & making artworks of concepts that I find to be outside my comfort zone, to challenge myself. Since I started drawing I felt free and ig the reason I did what I did to make me stressed is bc
I didn't want to be judged for drawing what I drew bc ppl would always point out what was wrong in
What I drew and ig I didn't want to be wrong, so I recommend for the artist that stress themselves out
When they draw to take a break from the internet go outside and just draw, don't think of anything of
What you're drawing don't look for the mistakes and trust me you WILL feel a difference 😁

First off I’m so happy with this video! I needed something like this to watch or for someone to speak about because to be honest…I been feeling like this with my art! Like someone else has done it!
It’s not that I’m angry, no, it’s the fact that I think my style is starting to become something it wasn’t at first. My art doesn’t look like my art anymore, because it’s so improved and consciously unbelievable how I was able to create a style, I BEEN WISHING TO HAVE!
I’m really starting to see improvement and I Just wanna say, it’s all because of you and any other artist I watch. I’m becoming so improved that I think this is a huge signs of improvement.
    Thank you ergojosh!!!❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

One of the ways I notice that I improve is when I get bored of drawing something. When that happens I know I've learned it very well at a certain level and should try to challenge myself to push the complexity a little bit further. For example, I've been studying just the front of the thigh for a few weeks - not for hours every day, but as one of the warm-ups I do, I'll test my ability to reproduce the flat anatomical view. At this point I have internalized a decent simplification of the surface muscles and can apply it to figures to give them more detailed mass, but now I'm noticing that I need better coverage of different poses and angles. To continue learning it I'll probably have to go collect a lot of references and practice the different views.
But at this point, I have another thing looming on the horizon, which is that I want to pursue doing some comics, and that would engage a lot of skills besides illustration - there's a whole art to panel composition and writing for comics that I'm aware of but not really practiced in. And you can't just practice drawing and painting to get better at them; while I've put in the effort to make some compositions with a storytelling component, it's like studying anatomy versus studying whole figures. So what I probably should do is find a way to study comics in depth and do "master studies" to grasp what it would look like if I try to put it all together.

    • @ergojosh
      @ergojosh  2 года назад +2

Its time to do the hardest thing - learn by doing. Try mixing it all together making a comic first and fight the instinct to learn how to do it first. Get a solid point of reference and grow from there! You’ll be surprised at what you can make right now and the older you will respect it.

I loved my art so much when I was a teen, then tried to find 'my style' and tried learning a bunch of other techniques and gaining knowledge from cartoons and shows I liked. Then, I just became unhappy with my art and myself, feeling like 'I'd never get it..'. I drew on and off for about 10 years, and found my happiest art moments when doodling and free sketching for no one in particular, trying not to aim for a 'style'. Then, by watching youtube videos, I found that I had a style this whole time. I draw what I like and what makes me happy, and by focusing on that (which turned out to be much more cartoony and childish drawings than the anime/beautiful animated styles I loved to watch) I've been drawing more and more and learning as I go. I recently looked at an anatomy class by Karina on Drawfee and it just 'clicked'! I tried so many times and would get fustrated. But I see this all as growth. I'm much more patient and accepting of finishing pieces, knowing that I'll be moving onto another to learn something new. I love it. I'm an elementary cartoon drawing art teacher now too! It's amazing what happens when you let yourself explore in your passions and what makes you happy, rather than others.

I’ve noticed this too about artists I love and admire! It’s still wonderful as you said, but I might notice a form off or like some line work that got too messy somewhere.
I felt bad for thinking like that, but I guess it means I’m improving. Here I was thinking I’m still not enough, but I didn’t know that. I’ve noticed I’ve gotten quicker with illustration, and I understand form and lighting a lot better, but I never knew noticing little things and others work meant you’re getting there. Thanks for the wonderful video!

I have been hitting the stage where I feel like I'm going stagnant. I look up to so much more artists and indulge myself in these amazing talent showcases, and when I try to draw them myself I get frustrated because it doesn't look as amazing as the arts I've seen.
This really helps me to reflect and realize that I have worked as best as I can, and albeit slowly, I DO improve. I always say that our biggest cheerleader is ourselves, the one that can pick us up and give us reason to keep going is ourselves, and this video really reminded me of that; that RIGHT NOW is the time when I need myself to tell me that I've done a good job, and to keep on walking.
    Thank you!

This made me feel so much better about my own drawings as well! I haven't gotten comfortable yet to start drawing more "human-like" characters and have stuck to more simple, cartoon-ish designs. However, I've been trying to study what other digital artists do and try to incorporate that into my own drawings. For instance, things like lighting, shading, and perspective. I do feel that in the one year I started to draw for the first time (digital and traditional), I'm seeing some differences from the first couple of drawings I did. I really do believe now that practice is key and just drawing things that make you feel happy is equally important. Hopefully, I get comfortable enough to do more concept art and sketch out things like rooms and buildings. I do feel that even the color and design of a room can somewhat tell a story. Great video!! ^^

I stopped drawing then it was all I could do for a while with whatever art supplies were around, a notebook, and copy paper. When I revisited old drawings and challenged myself on certain things I was able to execute it (or at least am a lot closer to what I was attempting). I couldn’t believe I drew/painted some of them. I know my arts improved although I’m still not happy where I’m at. I’m so glad I watched your vid about enjoying art when you’re bad at it too. These both really resonated and allowed me to gain perspective to start enjoying my art again.

I've been getting a lot of #1 this past two weeks. Really being on a self improvement roll. It's a great feeling when the results fuel you to make even better art. Made one render and really liked how the body turned out but the face was a struggle, but it pushed me to really nail the face the second time. I felt it got better but the hair was crap so it pushed me to do it even better next time! By the end the last two I made were unrecognizable from the first in terms of quality! Really proud of myself in that sense.
The only problem is that my audience is usually just a few close friends since my media presence is almost non-existent lol

I noticed an improvement when I decided to create a stylized version of live action celebrities from a famous movie from disney "lemonade mouth". It showed myself that I can simplify people into characters that have never been displayed as a cartoon before by knowing how to keep the likeness of a person. It challenged me to break down the person into their most simple form and I learned so much from start to finish.

I didn’t notice it cuz it was a multiple people drawing but when i was examining specific parts i realized one of the hands looked like it was struggling to breathe lol. And since I’m doing an art trade I also have to make sure it contains important features. signs of improvement for me personally:
    1. when making a mistake using it to my advantage instead of throwing the drawing away (i do traditional art with markers so fixing mistakes is a bit tough lol)
    2. being able to step out of ny comfort zone. i'd always been scared of trying new things and chose to stick to only a single style, color them the same basic way as always... being confident in yourself to try some new style/coloring/drawing technique is definitely an improvement in my eyes :)

One sign that I was improving is my hands felt more confident. Like I wasn't afraid to put marks down any more, I can see a mistake and know what I need to do to fix it and when I need to start all over, when I need more reference.
I also stopped rushing myself to finish quickly when working a timed session, but instead of cramming more in as quickly as possible I try to summarise and use broader strokes

  • @TomNCatz

Not necessarily something that "helps me tell I'm improving" but your last note about when to ask for critic has a bit of another facet to it. When people ask me for critic and I look at their piece critically and talk back and forth with them on what I see there, both good and bad, I find that I am learning then too. Breaking down what you see deliberately for the purpose of helping improve it and thinking about how to communicate that has helped me to look at my own pieces with a more refined eye as well.

I forgot her name but I always thought her art was SOO amazing until
About a year ago I realized.... I could draw what she could draw back when I used to watch her
And I was soo amazed and realized it wasn't as hard to draw in the artstyle she had
And it really gave me a confidence boost bc I couldn't draw like her until 6 years later
And it helped me know how much I improved in 6 years, I remember that my poses were stiff
And how my colours didn't go together and how I couldn't draw hands even tho now Im still not good
At it, it always helps to look back at my old art too see how much I've improved, I've been drawing for 12 years I started getting into drawing when I was 1 I'm 13 now and even tho I'm young and my art isn't the way I like it I always go look at artists old work and their work now and it always helps me to know that
No one is born with the talent they by have now it took them years of work to have their talent😁✨

For me, I think one of the markers of getting better is recognizing the techniques the artists I look up to use. Like, I used to look at art and have no idea how they did it or what I liked about it, but now I notice how they use linework, brushwork, form, color etc. And appreciating artists I overlooked more came with it, along with realizing mistakes in art I thought was flawless.

I just had this video recommended to me, and I am so glad I set aside time to watch it. I relate especially to your tip about how receiving comments from the people you admire and/or professionals is really a sign of improving and becoming better.
My story... (sorry for the long-ish post)
I have been learning how to digitally draw and paint better since I first got my Wacom in 2018. Prior to that, I was only a traditional artist. Switching mediums was fun but intimidating and I did bad for quite a while. Yet I have always wanted to improve, and kept a small list of artists in mind I wanted to learn from and emulate in my own style. Well, as time went on, I got much better. Like you also point out, I see the flaws in the people I admire because I am training my eye. I still admire their works but I don't feel like it's "God level" to achieve anymore. So, as I improved, I noticed my friendship circle has actually dissolved more than grown. People outright admit they are jealous of me and that turns into pure anger more often than not! Even though I willingly teach my method to others. I now only have just a small handful of people from that old friendship circle who comment or like my art circa 2021-22. It hurts and is not easy to cope with, but it's taught me multiple things: I AM improving. I CAN actually become as good as the people I admired. And I learned an extremely valuable lesson about true friendship!

Thank you for making this video! There are moments where I feel like my art isn’t great, but then I look at my older art and see that I have improved A LOT
I think a sign (technically two signs) that I’m improving is when I see that I have made a piece faster and/or that something I had trouble drawing before is now easier to do. It used to take me at least 5 hours to make a very simple piece, but now I can make one that is more detailed with better structure in that same amount of time.
I’m still learning anatomy, especially for the human torso, but I realized that my torsos now are more realistically proportional and have actual form to them. I used to struggle so much with toros and they would end up looking like weird, inflexible tubes. Even though I’m still learning, I realized that torsos are now much easier to draw than before, amen they look better too
Improving can take a long time, but it is seriously worth the wait. If younger me could see the art I’m making today, she would be like “No way, that’s not possible.” But it is possible. We all improve at different rates deepening on the person and the point in time in our lives, but we all improve nonetheless. The most important thing to do is to not give up, no matter how temping it might be
