Today we're driving Alex's 1990 Subaru Sambar Kei Van! Not only has it been converted into a one-of-a-kind VW Van lookalike, but it's hiding a lot more under the surface than we ever could've imagined! Brake fluid in the dashboard, a gas tank you have to squat to fill, the list goes on and on. It is one of the original Kei vans to grace the streets of Japan, before finally making its way here to Canada as a JDM import. Enjoy!

I love it! The engine sound is surprisingly cool too.
If anybody wants one of these and you decide to get it imported to the U.S. make sure there is no VW emblems anywhere on it mine just got flagged at the port for counterfeit trademark and it’s costing me a lot extra to get it shipped back to Japan just to get the emblem taken off and shipped right back here. And be careful also because the seller of mine edited out the VW emblem on all the pictures so I didn’t even know it had one on there so be careful. Learn from my costly mistake.
I imported a '95 Suzuki Carry kei truck. I find myself smiling and laughing when I drive it as well. Thanks for sharing.

I work at Subaru of Indiana,the only Subaru plant outside of Japan and I've only known these existed for a couple days.
Take a look at the wonderful Honda N- Box a real stunner - Also great for us in the U.K. to import because we also drive on the left as they do in Japan. The only legal modification is to fit a rear Fog light/lamp and fit a stick over speedometer reader from kilometres to Miles per hour 😎

JDM vehicles over 25 years old can be imported into the USA but not all areas will register them for on road use. 15 years or older can be imported to Canada.

Should have added the larger VW front logo. Seen a tiny Suzuki-VW conversion where I live with the full VW paint job replete with larger logo and 15” white-walls spaced out from the body and it looks awesome-twice as good as this one.

There are newer kei vans sold in the Philippines for around $5K. And they’re left hand drive.
The kei vans/trucks in the Philippines are chopped up, imported as parts(for tax purposes), are then reassembled and the steering wheel moved to the left.
I saw one of these in Edmonton they are so beautiful...the wheels are so small in diameter

Great little busses and the mileage on a full tank is way more than 100km more like 45 miles to the gallon on mine but i don't rev it like a super bike !

The math says he is getting 10 miles to the gallon. How? There must be somthing wrong with his carb
Well it's a very small motor, and to get up to highway speeds the motor has to wind up to 6500 RPM, so the motor is just screaming. Bigger tires should help mileage.
Plus it is 32 years old, bet the motor has not had an overhaul in that time. Japanese Kei cars imported into the U.S. tend to be high mileage.

yes. Look up "Kei vans" that are older than 25 years
there’s a company in Cleveland Tennessee that has them. I’m getting one imported now by a company in Carrollton Texas. So yes. But some states won’t register them.
what a 25 litre tank only gets you a driving range of 100 km ???
Yep, it s normal for 20+ years old car. Its old carburetor motor, if you want to go pretty much "dynamically", then you will have to revving it non stop. I have modern 2016 version of same car and this car consumes 6 liters per 100 kilometers.
@@rammstein7573 Thats not normal for a 25 year old car. The small honda civics from he nineties, still get up to 50 mpg. This van weighs about the same at 2000 lbs. Something isnt right here.

I think its because the engine is so small. Its working to hard to reach normal speeds. But even so, 10mpg is insane.
