As someone who lived in Hawaii for a while in the early 2000's. I wish Kei vehicles were the norm there. I feel like they're really the perfect vehicles for the islands.
The Subaru Domingo was also sold in Germany as the Subaru Libero (also with EFI engines) and it was quite a popular car back then as it could match up to Autobahn speeds. Nowadays it's still a quite sought after item, with some very good kept up examples (especially these with the retracable glas-sunriof) reaching prices up to 12k€.
Unfortunately, "no replacement for displacement" isn't always right. It may be twice the size, but in reality only makes maybe 5-10 more horses than a nice turbo'd/supercharged Kei engine. The EF12 was pretty sluggish when it came out, but it's built to last. If you did get one, make sure it's got EFI and slap in a turbo. Expensive, but you'd have the fastest Kei-type van around. Really cool van either way, might run a bit nicer in town than your average Kei van too.
For around town and just normal city driving it really is a better kei van in every way. I think the only flaw these have besides the ECVT is parts are hard to come by and more expensive than usual. but I definitely want one eventually
I didn't know about the Domingo's engine. Nice. 1200cc, if you add a turbo you get that acceleration power you need on american freeways and can cruise without super stressing the engine all the time.
people overrate how much acceleration you actually need for american highways. I pulled a fully loaded teardrop trailer with my fiat 500 across the states. Acceleration was horrific but someone will always end up letting you merge. (though it felt a bit sketchy at times)
@@Lepretr0n It being possible doesn't mean it's a good idea. Chances are if you try to drive a 50cc moped coast to coast including freeways ... you won't make it :)
Should try doing a hill climb test up Wilhelmina Rise, its a few blocks away from the JDM Hawaii Repair shop plus you get a fun winding round to drive down after.
Hey Guy - You need to try and get your hands on a Suzuki Carry (or Every) van with a turbocharged 3 cylinder engine. I owned one for several years. (turbocharger, intercooler, fuel injected, 4WD) It was a ROCKET!! They are rare but they're out there!!
There's also the Suzuki Every Landy (1.3L) or Super Carry (1.1L) and a ton of others. Suzuki made soooooo many variations of the Carry/Every but they had limited releases in different markets. The late 90s/early 00s Landys are pretty sweet, though! Very similar to the Domingo in size and functionality and even though they moved the engine to the front, they still look really cool, unlike a lot of modern kei vans.

That’s big $$$$
Tell Scotty Kilmer that lol
Bring it,I'd love to put an exhaust on a "Big Block" LOL.
I know I’ve said Id drive a lot of cars to the west coast to get an exhaust from you but the Domingo is actually fast and big enough to make that happen lol
Well if you shipped it here from JDM HI you got it licked bud..lol@@Waybeforethefame
bruh the domingo is my dream car T^T i want it so badly!!! I wish i wasnt broke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You'll get there brah!!!!
@@Waybeforethefame someday for sure T^T just gotta work hard
Bro a hiace isn't so happy over 120. I cruise mine about 110 just to be nice to it.
True True, at least with a Hiace you're very cozy and riding on real size wheels lol
@@Waybeforethefame yeah well mine has a 2" lift and general grabber all terrains. I take that bitch everywhere
Maybe a Toyota Lite Ace.or Nissan Vanette.
those aren't vans? I believe those are both trucks
Would love to see a camper build out of it.
That’s my goal honestly
what does JDM mean? What does KEI mean? i love these silly little vans but I want one I can drive on the street legally.
JDM Mean "Japanese Domestic Market" and refers to cars that were made by Japanese companies, obeying the country's regulations. Kei is a class of cars that are small and awesome pretty much lol
Does Kei mean something in Japanese like small or something?

110 km/h sounds find to me; I drive a Mercedes Sprinter at that speed and I'm still faster than most other cars.
The sprinter motor is like 3x this one lol but I agree 110klm is good
I think if the vehicle had a supercharger it would meet your expectations
I agree, but I think I'm also being greedy, 70 MPH in a kei van is more than enough for a car shaped like a box
Firstly!
🏆🏆🏆
Seven seater ? For kids ? Dwarfs ? Dogs ? 🤣🤣🤣
7 thin Japanese people brah
What are you excepting from Kei runs too slow for you
Then just buy big truck
I
not a kei tho, engine is double the size
if man if your looking for powerful engine kei cars not for you man.. . kei cars a utility car not a race car..lol
This isn’t a kei car though
wow the pavement is terrible, worse than where I live
