Salieri wrote this as a 20 year old. A singer by trade; Salieri didn’t want to be ‘aimless’ with his melodies. He worked for Gassmann and the Italian opera company in Vienna. Had he been less secure in employment as an opera composer, I’m sure he would have had a more robust career within the instrumental sphere...This concerto shows a certain originality that would have gained the attention of music lovers in Vienna.
Deliziosa opera di Antonio Salieri, diffamato presso il grande pubblico ma ritenuto nel suo tempo il massimo compositore a Vienna. E Mozart, all'epoca molto meno considerato, era così in contrasto con lui da affidargli l'educazione musicale del figlio Franz Xavier! E quando nel 1788 Salieri fu chiamato in carica come Kapellmeister, anziché proporre per l'occasione un'opera propria, preferì curare l'allestimento di una riedizione delle Nozze di Figaro di Mozart. Quando il mondo tedesco volle costruire una propria dimensione storico-artistica, cancellò gli italiani dalla musica in terra germanofona per creare una storia pura, che va da Bach a Wagner, Brahms e Strauss. Tutta la folta schiera di italiani che avevano alimentato la cultura musicale tedesca soprattutto nel corso del '700 e nei primi dell'800 furono spazzati via. Il classicismo non è nato con Haydn, bensì da un coro plurale, in cui c'è posto per italiani, tedeschi e francesi.
Salieri was so focused on operatic composition that he rarely composed instrumental music after the age of 25. A shame as he appears to have been quite able….There are excellent passages in all three movements. Music lovers in Vienna would have been quite surprised to hear such a sensitive and mature piece of music from a beginner of 20…

Molto bello, linguaggio perfettamente inserito nel classicismo viennese. Perché Salieri dovrebbe essere considerato inferiore al "noioso" Haydn? Questa musica rivela un grandissimo musicista.
