  • @MisterMorcus
    @MisterMorcus 6 лет назад +12

    I may be in the minority on this since most enthusiasts think that sharper pixels are better, of course I also think that this depends on the types of game you are playing on the WII. 240p Component to my CRT looks fantastic. On the flip side, for say a game like Donkey Kong Country Returns, I use a generic WII HDMI adapter paired to the M-Cable. The M-Cable not only upscales to 1080P but also adds anti-aliasing and makes the game look like it came out on a much more modern system.
    Regardless, I think that all of these options are great and appreciate getting to see them in this video.

    • @shiva_MMIV
      @shiva_MMIV 6 лет назад

      I never understand that "the more pixels you see the better" attitude, honestly. Putting a lot of money in retro consoles equipment to obtain an image totally different to what the designers originally intended and call it "perfect" is nosense to me, but to each his own.

    • @megalon84
      @megalon84 6 лет назад +2

      @@shiva_MMIV It's not at all a totally different image in most cases, not in the way you're implying in which the game is now a drastic departure from the game designers' intentions. Often times it's to get a cleaner image out of a console with the stock less-than-optimal output due to cost-cutting measures when the hardware was conceptualized. The Wii just straight up has a cheap DAC with worse Component signal output than its predecessor and bringing it up to par is not changing the games in any manner worth complaining. On an otherwise identical setup, Gamecube games look quite a bit worse on the Wii than using an actual Gamecube. Virtual Console titles, such as SNES games, looks worse than playing them on an unmodified RGB-capable SNES, because of the ugly artifacts and added blurriness of the Wii's signal.
      Where I would agree with you is something like using N64 mods to disable anti-aliasing or Gameshark codes to remove the texture filtering -- which does fundamentally change the intended artistic look and aesthetics of those titles to more resemble PS1/Saturn games. But striving for actual good signal quality (that should have been possible at the time!) over the poor output that made it into the system because of price-focused hardware compromises is not the same thing and should not be outright dismissed.

    • @shiva_MMIV
      @shiva_MMIV 6 лет назад

      @@megalon84 When I was talking about retro consoles I was talking more about the likes of the Megadrive or the NES, to me the Wii is not old enough to consider it retro ;-)
      Also, I'n not a fan of the big N design decisions, if they can save a cent in the manufacturing costs they'll do it, but perhaps the more smooth output compared to the GC was an intended effect, after all they knew that the wii was going to be connected mostly to HD flat panels.

    • @megalon84
      @megalon84 6 лет назад +2

      @@shiva_MMIV It's not smoother output, it's a cheap DAC with worse output quality and it's obviously not intentional. If the intent was smoother output they would have utilized some sort of bilinear/smoothing filters like they did for N64 hardware or on the Wii U with certain Virtual Console games. There's no sense in guessing that they perhaps did this on purpose when we know that's not true.
      I was talking about the Wii because this is a video about the Wii and the person you originally responded to was talking about the Wii, so...
      Wii itself is 12 years old now. That's plenty old. In 2008, N64/PS1/Saturn were already retro (12+ years old by that time). If you go back further, mid-to-late '80s consoles were already considered retro by the time we reached 1998, making them about as old as the Wii is now. All consoles become retro with the sufficient passing of time, usually 10+ years, not due to one's personal feeling.

    Well, there is one reason to enable scanlines on a CRT screen: When playing on a VGA computer monitor. :D
    The image quality can easily be compared to BVM and PVM screens under the right conditions and via Component- or HDMI-to-VGA-conversion. Getting back to an analog VGA signal is not really a loss when you use proper shielded cables and computer monitors will also scale properly with various resolutions (a very huge advantage against modern LCD/digital screens).

      The dchdmi is for the dreamcast right? Do you know what the internal resolution is with that mod? Is it still 480p but the output is 1080p? Or is it like dolphin where it changes the internal resolution to 1080p? Would that even be possible?

    vWii looks bad at 480p because the Wii U "zooms in" to compensate for the underscan, and since the resolution of the actual picture is around 456p, the resolution needs to be higher than 912p (according to the Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem). In fact, it looks MUCH better if you set the output resolution to 1080p.
    Also, the aspect ratio is wrong because you set the output to 16:9 (on both consoles).
    And yes, I have watched the whole video and read the description :)

  • @naikrovek

    Great video. I am fairly sure that "outputted" isn't a word, though. Also, it looks like the Wii is set to 16:9 output and the display/capture device isn't. Things are squished horizontally (too narrow), looks like.

    Bob, what do you like to use for 480i? Ossc pass thru to your oled? Ossc BOB? Framemeister? Crts only?
    As for the wii dual it sure isn't cheap but you can count me in for one. Looks like it's going to run almost $200 for a kit, installation, and rgb scart cable. I ignored the wii during its prime. With the mod slightly bumping up the quality I think now is the time to tackle the wii library.

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  6 лет назад

      Personally, I try everything to avoid 480i. ISO patches, hardware mods, anything I can do. Then if I'm stuck with 480i, I try to play on a CRT....but if I have to play on a flat-screen, I'll usually try the TV's deinterlacing first, then "settle" on BOB deinterlacing. It doesn't look bad and I love that no log is added, but there's still some flicker. Adding scanlines sometimes helps.

    As many people have pointed out, there seem to be issues with the post-processing of the comparison shots. None skew my results (Wii Dual is great for people who want the best, maybe not necessary for casual Wii gamers) and my description of the comparisons reflect what I ABSOLUTELY saw when I was recording the captures. I'll try to post a future video with a focus on the highest quality comparisons, but please keep in mind this was an overview and walkthrough of a product, not a detailed technical analysis.
    Also, it seems I forgot to keep the aspect ratio constant when taking menu shots, which is why some of the menu circles seem like ovals. Seriously though, they're shots of a menu screen, not game footage...anyone obsessing over that either has too much time on their hands, or enjoys posting nitpicky negative comments.

      Without the video's post-processing does the HDMI solution look closer to the zoomed in RGB with OSSC at 7:56? (at that point in the video you can see the sharp pixels "pop in" which I think is when the zoom overcomes the post-processing).
      Basically I want sharp pixels like if you run a Wii game on the Dolphin emulator outputting at the Wii's native resolution. Is that something that is achievable with this mod?

    A little thing thats not correct in this video. The component technology used in the wii is not analog, it is digital Y'CbCr, this is why the wii2hdmi is so cheap, because thats also digital to digital. Only the sound is analog.
    The reason for the lines, is the way it deviding the colour, which is not rgb. But in Luna and red and Blue difference chroma. This is again by the tv decoded, and it is in this translation, that is pure digital, the noise will come.
