@@OttoJulian_ If someone adds the DJI Bluetooth mic to the DJI Action 5, does that improve the ability of the Action 5 to pick up sound, and from farther away?
I love my action 5 pro. I used it to film in Japan and it ended up being my only camera I used because it was so convenient to record with and because of that I got a ton more footage than normal to work with when I got home. My only real gripe is that low light kind of sucks and I find the look of the Super night to not be usable. It may have great low light for an action camera but I consider it a trade off for the convenience vs my mirrorless. Overall I'm really impressed with the quality of the footage in such a tiny and light camera and the stabilization is excellent for my uses.
Hi! You are back from Japan! Hope you had a great time! Yeah the low light is nothing compared to a mirrorless camera but for an action camera it’s quite good, specially if we look at GoPro and the action 4 performance, but as you said, the small size makes it quite convenient. I’m planning a trip to Japan most likely for next year. Besides my Sony camera I’m more inclined to bring the Pocket 3
@OttoJulian_ if I had a pocket 3 that would have been my main choice. It seems to be the middle ground of quality between mirrorless and small handheld cameras. I saw LOTS of them used in Japan and honestly was a little tempted to get one myself.
@@TonyStockX it’s good., as long as you understand the limitations being an action camera, which are far from being perfect or a replacement for bigger cameras. I think that’s the problem with many users who think that they need to perform close to a mirrorless camera.
@@OttoJulian_ got it!! Much appreciate it! Yeah based on all the review videos I’m just hoping I can simply see myself lol. The action 4 is horrible in low light. Hoping the 5 is way better
hi! new subscriber here! which is better between the two if I never know when to take horizontal or vertical videos? I always want to have the option of changing the orientation of my videos. I know insta360 has the freeframe mode but does DJI action 5pro have the same function?
It's easy for me: 178g is insanely heavy for using as a helmet camera, and since it's bigger the moment of force is crazy. Assuming a center of gravity at the center of the camera, that gives (when camera parallel to ground, like when steeply turning on skies) 0.046N.m for the AP2, and just 0.032N.m for the Ac5. That's a 43% difference, this is actually quite big! It gets worse when looking at the moment of inertia, which is very relevant for neck movements: 0.073 g.m2 for the Ac5 vs 0.12 g.m2 for the AP2. Add to that the insane battery life of the Ac5 and it's an obvious choice.
"178g is insanely heavy for a helmet camera" what Planet are you on? Maybe if you have a neck like limp spaghetti, for any average person, this is negligible (moreso when moving).
@@paddy1 weight isn't the issue as much as movement of arm and inertia. A small weight difference has a large impact away from a center of rotation. Simple scenario: paragliding competition. You need to look around all the time to avoid collisions. With a heavy camera it's actually really tiring over several hours. Also you sometimes need to spiral down, and you get multiple Gs in that case. A light camera is a blessing when we're talking about 4-6Gs. I'm sure there are similar scenarios for a lot of other sports.
@CuivTheLazyGeek Pure nonsense. There are ~20 grams between this and the GoPro Hero 13... To sit here telling us that the person winning your fictional paragliding competition convincingly is the the person wearing the Go Pro because the helmet that's 20g lighter means less fatigue is comical. 20g heavier over extended use is negligible. And you don't spend anywhere near enough time experiencing enough gs for 20g's perceived load in that circumstance to be particularly taxing - any difference would be marginal (even if extremely unlikely) and not worth writing home about.
@paddy1 Well, since I'm that person doing those (very real) paragliding competitions, I can confidently say you're wrong :) Welcome to physics and moment arm mate!
If there is one thing that I have learned. From watching content creators is that. You have to watch quite a few of them. While a percentage are both honest and unbiased. Intheir reviews about whatever. Some are brand fanboys. Others are sponsored, you are one of the honest content creators.
I have both cameras as well. My initial thoughts from reviewing footage from both are that the Action 5 looks better in good lighting, but is still unusable in extreme low light. The Ace Pro 2's image can be soft, but produces actually usable footage in extreme low light without a gimbal. In scenarios where I'm using an action cam (Beach, rain, boat, etc.), I don't want to have to connect a wireless mic where I'm worried about it getting wet, sandy, or oily from the sunblock. I'm leaning on keeping the AP2, but I'm going to do some more tests over the coming weeks.
Hi! Thanks for sharing your own experience! Good point about the external mic and I appreciate your insight about low light on these 2 cameras. The Ace Pro is a very good camera, despite all the haters on the flip screen and other details but it’s good to read this kind of feedback
@@OLC_Fishing No. I think their mic implementation is industry leading. I did a whole bunch of tests comparing it to the Action 5 on my channel. Not trying to phish for viewers on Otto's channel, but if you find them useful, they took a ton of work.
Happy to be educated and / or accused of not paying attention, but I am confused as to which camera is which at different points in the review when both Camera designations A and B are used in an interchangeable manner - see time sequence point 5.10 and 7.40 for example, am I missing something? Is A the DJI Action Pro 5 until time stamp 7:40 after-which they switch before switching back again at 8:16?
@@quotidian5114 hi! Sorry about the confusion. When you watch the sequence at the end it says which camera is A and which is B. This was meant for the viewer to focus on more on the video aspect while trying to find which one looks the best or more appealing for that person. Sometimes people are influenced by the camera, so I tried to show it in a different way. If you have any questions let me know, happy to help, and appreciate your way of asking
Pretty damn fast honestly it does depends on the size of the video but I downloaded an 18 min video in about a minute and a half if the clip is within a minute it’s like 5 seconds
5:48 I like the Action 5 but this kinda puts me off. I know it's personal preference but for my use, I don't take a lot of close up shots or "selfie mode" as I only use it for motorcycling, and I do like the colour profile of the Ace pro 2. I ride a lot at night too and I've heard there may be some stabilisation issues with the dji in night mode. But the battery accessories and life on the dji is so useful for riding. The AI features and app for the insta360 is quite appealing too though...Any other cyclists/motorcyclists, what did you guys go with?
I think the major differences are that DJI has way longer battery life, is smaller and lighter, and... has 10bit log. In some reviews I do see that the Ace Pro 2 has a bit more detail, but for actionsports,... don't think that mathers to much. I still hesitate though. I have the GoPro10, and Insta360 Ace , and... that GoPro overheats way to easy and that Insta360 Ace Pro, is a 'brick' , bulky, but till now, fine. I want to replace that GoPro, since, for studiowork it's a hassle, since, overheats easily (I usually do interviews, 30 minutes or longer, with batterydoor closed, it will fail after 20 minutes, with door open and batterypack, it 'goes', but not always). I like the DJI one, great battery life and 10bit log, gives ya bit more room to play, ... I saw thought that the lensflare is a bit weird, but other then that, I think this one will become the new 'gopro' hehe.... I don't use the mobile 'editing' options, I always edit on my laptop/computer, so that the app of Insta is better, don't care much. 1 point that was never mentioned, is that DJI luckily did improve the bitrate, since, that one is a big one.... nice to have 10bit log, but if the bitrates are low, ... bit useless then. That 8K... will that ever hit the market? I mean, I have it on my R5 also, but... I really couldn't see the difference, other then getting UUUUUGEE files and a PC that couldn't handle it. And... not many 8K tv/screens out there ayh....
@@OttoJulian_ Hi! Umm, how to make sure it’s properly secure before getting it wet, like which areas to tighten. And what to do/not to do after use in the water. Thanks!
@@mommyshane1928 simple: there are 2 doors, make sure they are well closed, if you see like an orange or red part on the doors it means they are not properly closed. tighten the lens, don't use other ones like ND filters (They are not waterproof) and once you come out of the water rinse with plenty of fresh water, specially if you used the camera in the sea
in the video clip I showed, it still seems to be a bit soft, but I'll run some tests during the weekend and if anything weird shows up I'll share the results
If you know how to edit AND color grade then it’s a good reason to get it. If you don’t then it’s not an advantage. Of course, it’s not as professional as the log profile on a DSLR or mirrorless but we are not comparing these

@@SL1984_ no, but I’ve been reading some reports about it and people have said that it happened when the device was hot and they moved to a colder environment. As far as I know, this is common with lenses but there might be something else going on
DJI offers 2 wireless lapel microphones, internal memory and time code features. Does the other one have these? Internal memory is not important, but if time code and a wireless microphone are connected, without a receiver or if it doesn't say to buy a device like a GoPro for the cable, my preference is Ace Pro 2 for 8K, otherwise these are DJI. Can those who know explain?
Thank you for the excellent review. My question, which is the superior camera for underwater video and photography? I currently have an Akaso v50x, which was surprisingly pretty decent, for the price. I am looking to upgrade to something more serious for snorkeling and diving. Thanks, in advance.
My experience underwater with these cameras is very limited, but a few people I know (not content creators) that work at this have shown me videos of what they do and I feel the Action 5 performs better. And no, I'm not being paid by DJI to say that :)
Very useful content! Thank you for it! I want to use it for filming while sailing, but I can not find any comments on the quality of the film after the water splashes on the camera and how it affects the vision. Do you have any comments on that?
these cameras have something that they called "hydrophobic" lens coating, when the water hits the lens it will fall off. This works as intended most of the times, unless your lens is not clean or external factors like that could affect it.
Plan me buying Insta 360 ace pro 2 why it can flip only up and down and plus ai voice generation and on wide view it won't turned the video to little eyelash
That’s a good question! Not sure if they sold too quickly or if they didn’t produce enough. I was told by them that today that they are working fast to keep up with the production
@ besides, influencers have saved me thousands of dollars by showing the products before we buy them, can’t blame them or the companies, I just don’t like when said companies try to hype or hide info
I would have liked to get the AP2 but it's not available anywhere. Also, in some clips I've noticed how the skyline behind trees will flicker on the AP2 footage. This looks terrible and is something they will need to fix before I consider getting one.
@@OttoJulian_ No but it very apparent in some other videos I've seen. The lack of detail in the skyline on the DJI is unfortunate too but not as bad as the AP2 flickering issue.
@ that’s interesting! I’ll look into this. Maybe some of my unpublished videos have it but I haven’t noticed? Thanks for the feedback, oh yeah DJIs clouds seem to be a bigger deal than I originally thought!
I need your help. Right now I have a Dji 5 but was thinking about getting a second camera as a face cam (motovlogging) so dont know if I should get same camera or give ace 2 a try. Good thing about dji is to share the extra batteries filters etc! What would you do?
@@xLaSoMBrAx Sorry the shooting tips reply was for someone else. I think it depends. Personally I would be split because I like to have different products just to feel them out and use them in different case scenarios. I think in your case, you might want to consider having the same color science and overall looks. Something I don't like is to match footage from different cameras when I edit videos, so if you care about that 2 of the same will make sense, and also what you said about sharing the same accessories is important.
I have thr the action 4 and for my uses i want to be able to get short clips to my phone quickly at the time and post them on socials. DJI's software for this use case is clunky and time consuming. Is this better with the Insta?
both are good, choose the one that looks better for you and have the features that you find the most interesting/useful. Also make sure that you are ok with how the clouds look on the Action 5 Pro, a lot of people don't like them
Thank you for the detailed comparison. Very nicely done and covered a lot! IMHO, the AP2 looks sharper and more detailed in 8K, but less natural. It looks a bit over sharpened. The DJI AP5 seem to have less distortion on the edges than the Insta360 AP2. The longer battery, smaller form factor, charger, internal storage, better water resistance are all factors that swing the choice toward DJI.
How is the zoom does it gradually zoom in or it clicks in like 1x, 2x as i see on these phones & Kan you do a video about the live view remote for the insta360 Action 2.. Great video on those aspects. Thanks 🙏🏽
I'd say both are easy to use for beginners, so it all comes down to which one you feel had the best settings and video quality or the things that matter the most for you. There is really no right answer.
@ Can you look at the video remotely through either of their apps? Similar to how with the DJI Pocket you can connect to the device with your phone and see the same thing your camera is seeing ?
(Edit, I thought max fps was 60, it's 120 st 4k. ) 8:39 to clarify, in case someone misunderstood, he's only talking about the horizon lock. But without it both do 4k 60 fps. But Ace Pro does 8k 30fps DJI doesn't, it goes up to 4k 60fps. This is clearly stated on their website. So for action both ste really 4k 60 cameras. For slow footage you can use 8k 30fps on the Ace Pro 2. You can see the fps without at 11:31
@@mtbboy1993 mmm actually they go up to 4K 120fps. Yeah that section was meant for the horizon lock, the actual max resolution was mentioned before that part. What do you mean about the fps at 11:31 ? Didn’t get that. That table is for internal memory record times
@@OttoJulian_ I see a website states both can do 240 fps high speed video. So if that's true that's great slow motion. But I don't know at which resolution.
@@mtbboy1993 yeah 240fps is at 1080p, looks bad honestly, I did show an example on both original reviews, but cut it out from this versus video since it was getting way too long
5:41 I think Camera A looks better for your face, but camera B pulls details from the clouds better. Perhaps focus or sharping needs to be added on camera B.
Not sure of how you’d pull it off unless you have clips from before the recent firmware update on the action 5 but is there anyway you can do a comparison video of the low light before and after the latest firmware update?
@ I mean the super night mode the update says it improved the image quality and performance of super night mode and now you can shoot up to 4K 60FPS in night mode I don’t really have that much night mode footage to compare it to from before the update
@notbillymays5062 mmm I’m sure it’s not a big difference because I had a bunch of videos taken before the update and I can’t tell a difference. Now, I also think you are confused. Super night mode at 4K still caps at 30fps. 60fps is possible only using 1080p. That’s a trade off that personally I would not use.
@ I think you’re missing an update man! I’m looking at it right now 4k 60fps in super night mode I have my camera set to it right now and was recording some test footage last night!
Is there anyone who buys both and would use them each for different things? If so, what would they be used for individually? I want an AP2 as a dash cam but want the OA5 for snorkelling and diving
I mean, you can, but it won't look too good because these cameras perform better with plenty of light. If you are thinking of a YT studio it's better to get a mirrorless camera, just a bit more expensive but great results
@OttoJulian_ any small clip... Can you upload it to we transfer or something and share... I just want to check the video quality straight out of the camera

@@OttoJulian_ OK, but would be interesting to know exactly why, it doesn't make sense. It's not a hardware thing. It's firmware. So to me it seems like a silly statement to not do it. But if they do it any then they make a fool of themselves. What it will do is effect file size. I don't see why adding 10 bit colour would require special hardware. Bu most monitors won't be able to display 10bit. Professional editing monitors will.
@@mtbboy1993 it’s actually a hardware thing according to them. They have publicly stated that. The chip is capable of other things but the trade off is not having 10bit color.
@OttoJulian_ OK, strange. I didn't know about the chip and 10 bit thing. But I'm curious why the chip can't do it. I don't see why. It's just color depth it's not like it's crazy demanding thing. Strange when DJI and Gopro can do it. So if this chip is so bad, it's strange choice. Does it mean it can't handle 10 bit with 4k 60? Or is it at 120 fps? 1 bit is not something most will notice. Not have monitor to display it. But 10 bit footage edited looks better whay I've seen. But a strange choice imo. But if it truly is the king of night footage then lots of people will go for it. I do mountain biking vids, and winter I coming, so it will be pitch black, and Gopros over the years have looked awful even with powerful lights surpassing a full size stadium.
@@muaensheikh2756 both are really good! They have their own pros and cons. The video will give you hints of what’s better on each category. For example, if you are going to be on a windy location the wind guard can’t be beaten unless you use an external mic?
@OttoJulian_ for me it's important the stabilization and the battery and for sure the night shooting . I would use external mic with good noise cancelation so what you recommend for me please?

I know insta360 has the freeframe mode but does DJI action 5pro have the same function?
hi! no, DJI doesn't have a freeframe equivalent
Add to that the insane battery life of the Ac5 and it's an obvious choice.
good points!

Great video. I ended up purchasing the Ace Pro 2 as I liked the color, details and sharpness of the video.
Very nice. That’s a good choice!
Whaaaat an action camera footage unusable in low light? Well, I never
@wayneberry3453 these people want a $300 camera to do what a $3000 camera does
Whats your thoughts so far? Do you need an external mic on ace pro 2?
@@OLC_Fishing No. I think their mic implementation is industry leading. I did a whole bunch of tests comparing it to the Action 5 on my channel. Not trying to phish for viewers on Otto's channel, but if you find them useful, they took a ton of work.
Great video thank you! Does the Action5 have pause recording feature like insta360 ace pro?
Thank you for sharing. Which one you recommend for workout videos and photos?
Can the footage from DJI be transferred directly to iPhone phone and how fast is the whole process ??… thanks and an awesome video ❤
Thanks. Yeah it can be transferred to your phone. How fast? I haven’t really paid attention to this
Pretty damn fast honestly it does depends on the size of the video but I downloaded an 18 min video in about a minute and a half if the clip is within a minute it’s like 5 seconds

I think the Ace Pro 2 has a focus issue? Is it true?

I want to use it for filming while sailing, but I can not find any comments on the quality of the film after the water splashes on the camera and how it affects the vision. Do you have any comments on that?

Thank you for the detailed comparison. Very nicely done and covered a lot! IMHO, the AP2 looks sharper and more detailed in 8K, but less natural. It looks a bit over sharpened. The DJI AP5 seem to have less distortion on the edges than the Insta360 AP2. The longer battery, smaller form factor, charger, internal storage, better water resistance are all factors that swing the choice toward DJI.

Actually 10-bit can be added in a firmware update just like DJI did with Action 4.......
Their chip doesn’t support it. They already said it publicly
With want best????
both are great!
Can you make a video compairing the regular Ace 2 to the DJI action 5 non-pro?
As far as I know there is no "non-pro" version. It's just this one (for now)
@@OttoJulian_ Guess I'm not upgrading then.
@@kennyadvocat ok 👍
thankyou so much, been waiting for this kind of honest comparison and side by side videos, some other youtubers are straight bs covering up the shitty looks of the insta360 ace pro 2 in post to make it look better.
ins360 focused so much on lowlight capabilities that their daylight video looks shit even at 8k.... bought insta360 before and never again, all just gimmicks and dog shite.
@@BearHandsGaming hey man. You are welcome. I don’t have a problem with either company but I like to show things in a neutral way as they are.
