    Its been cool to see you guys in my neck of the woods. I have been a member at the Georgia Aquarium since it was first opened. It has come a long way and they are still going. One of my favorite places. Sometimes I leave my office and go into the aquarium on lunch to clear my head from my corporate responsibilities. My wife and kids also love this place

    The way they designed the viewing pane with the crashing "swell" overhead is simply stunning. The inclusion of the wave action as part of the exhibit is what makes it so compelling.
    If it were completely empty, I'd still think it were one of the coolest tank in the world. Simply due to it's design. Then they packed it with a beautiful Indo-Pacific coral and fish. What's not to love?

    I really enjoyed this tour video. Thank you for sharing. Very similar to a home aquarium just a lot bigger scale. I found it interesting that they use instant ocean salt mix. I would love to know the reasoning behind that. I personally use Instant Ocean Reef Crystals in my our reef. I see online that some people turn their noses at the product, but for me it's a great product and very consistent. Kudos Victor with your generosity and donations to the aquarium.

    • @WorldWideCorals
      @WorldWideCorals  9 месяцев назад

      Thank you for watching and commenting! They get the best pricing on IO salt, and it has been around forever. Reef crystals is also a great salt as well. The alk is a little high, but with a bunch of stony corals in the tank, that can only help!

    • @stephenhartter6806
      @stephenhartter6806 9 месяцев назад

      Hi Gordon, Instant Ocean is a great salt that has proven capable of growing a wide range of marine animals for decades. In addition to cost savings, Instant Ocean is available in commercial super sacks. It isn’t practical to dump hundreds of bags or buckets of salt to create batches of saltwater at this scale.

    • @WorldWideCorals
      @WorldWideCorals  9 месяцев назад

      Great question! Unfortunately, that was not discussed on this visit, but can be on the next 😁

    • @stephenhartter6806
      @stephenhartter6806 9 месяцев назад

      Hi James, the PAR values vary since there is an “experimental” LED only section in addition to the traditional Metal Halide area. On top of that the natural sunlight fluctuates seasonally. Without natural sunlight the test section of LEDs is capable of PAR values exceeding 300umol/m2/s (though dimmed down lower through 0-10v control). The halides get about 100-150 umol/m2/s at the bottom (also dimmable). The lighting system is quite complex though and the control system dims the artificial lights based on natural sunlight values to mitigate seasonality.

    Could run rebreather setups so they don’t gotta worry bout bubbles

    • @WorldWideCorals
      @WorldWideCorals  9 месяцев назад

      Very true, but that requires different and very specific certifications. Surely something for them to consider! Thanks for watching!

    • @stephenhartter6806
      @stephenhartter6806 9 месяцев назад

      Rebreathers would solve the bubble issue but bring numerous other problems. They are clunky in smaller aquariums, especially with delicate corals since they have the two small tanks, scrubber, and counterlungs. In addition, they are challenging to maintain buoyancy when constantly changing depth in the shallow water. Rebreathers also take about 30-45 minutes to setup and the same amount of time to break down after each dive. Running through the prechecks alone takes several minutes and problems arise frequently due to the complexity of these setups. They also require a minimum of two divers in the water at the same time whereas surface supply diving is significantly more flexible and integrates a communication system which is important for working dives. Finally rebreathers require a separate certification program that is expensive and time consuming to implement. We utilize CCR frequently for research and conservation efforts but rarely utilize them within the building other than training and practice dives.

      Hey Cody, the pH referenced is the pH within the calcium reactor. This low pH promotes the dissolution of the calcium carbonate media making the ions available for the corals to uptake. The pH of the main exhibit is about 8.1 to 8.2.

    • @WorldWideCorals
