DJI Mini 2 Review: Real World Test in Alaska

- To test and review the DJI Mini 2 drone I took it deep into the Alaska snow covered mountains glaciers and lakes. This tiny 4k drone is capable and surprisingly good at capturing everything around you. It does have it's limitations but overall the mini 2 from DJI is an great upgrade from the original DJI Mavic Mini released last year. It's a great affordable portable small drone that will go with you anywhere and capture all your adventures.

There are jitters in the footage but these are not the fault of the drone but due to a frame rate mismatch that I forgot to correct in post
Hey jake question whats the difference between the mini 2 and the mavic air 2
I was literally just about to point that out.
@Legend Maurice took me 5 mins but i think i can go even faster thanks!
oh thank god, i was like 3 minutes in thinking damn this footage is stunning minus the horrible jitters when panning
@@piffsburgh6ix I know this is 4 months old, but the Air 2 has a larger sensor and can film in D-Log (essentially a raw video file).
So with the mini 2? You have to get your camera settings as close to perfect, because you can’t restore detail lost to over/under-exposure.
But with the mini 2? Due to its light weight? You can fly basically everywhere but restricted zones and over crowds of people.
The review of the drone is great, but the scenery steals the show. Spectacular!
Agreed! Thanks
@@JakeSloan I'm getting mine delivered tomorrow. Can you advise on SD card?
Your location makes this so visually pleasing! While I'm all focused on the Mini2, I couldn't overlook how this video was so wonderfully filmed.
Thank you very much
I just got the drone - it’s amazing! Even in strong winds it can stay completely still and take some amazing shots.
It's amazing such a little drone can do that!
Whic one u recommend mini2 or Mavic air 2 ? I’m gonna buy one of them today n m a beginner money is not the constraint guide me
@@DrPSinha This is my unprofessional opinion, but I owned the original MavAir for about 2 years and it served me well as a first time drone - primarily due to the collision sensors. I sold my MavAir and just ordered the Mini 2 - I feel I'm a fairly competent flyer now. The (new) MavAir 2 has a better camera with more native features plus the collision avoidance. If you can afford the extra $$, I'd go with the MavAir 2. On the flip side, it does require FAA reg in the US. No big deal, but a consideration, regardless. Oh, and the MavAir 2 is slightly larger, but not so large that you can't pack it up on a hike...but the Mini 2 is itsy bitsy, really ideal for throwing in your kit and scooting.
How much does it cost with fly more combo?
@@faikimgk7924 600 bucks
I have the Skydio 2 but, this Mini may be needed for my long hikes. Was that the Mindshift Backlight 26 liter pack? I have the 18L and it's my day hiker when loads of gear aren't needed and a lower profile pack is best. We had a dusting of snow here in Hawaii already too.
The mini 2 is going to be good for that I think and exactly why I bought it. Good eye on the back pack. I have the 18l for when I kayak/don’t need much. This was the 26l and I have the 36l for when I’m taking an overnight trip or need a crap ton of stuff lol. Great packs! It always blows my mind when Hawaii gets snow lol.
@@JakeSloan Yeah, I'm a camera pack geek of sorts. I also have the Shimoda X30 and the Atlas Athlete. The X30 is very versatile but the material squeaks. Not good for when hiking and filming.
I've beat my Backlight in harsh lava tubes and it's holding up well. All 3 packs are.
This early dusting was gone before sunrise but yeah it is weird how we get big snowstorms. Back in 92, I worked at the summit of Mauna Kea and we had 20' drifts.

Thank you for this review and the amazing shots!
You're welcome! Cheers
Thank you so much for this video! I deeply appreciate! You did what I needed right at the beginning of the video: Take off and Landing! A lot of guys make lots of videos, but do not show how to take off and lading! Thanks!
You’re welcome! Cheerz
beautiful environment Jake! just wow!
Thank you!!
Definitely big performance from a small device. Never doubted the Mini2 for a millisecond!
I doubted it till I used it!
Beautiful landscape and great information, thanks for the effort!
Thanks a lot!
Beautiful, absolutely beautiful
Thank you
Omg, breathtaking.
thank you
Great review of the Mini 2 Jake! Very timely for a winter preview of how it performs in the cold. One key selling point for me is the ability to charge the batteries on the go with a powerbank. I assume the powerbank can charge the controller also? The mountain vista at the 0:32 mark was spectacular! Great job!
Thank you very much! yes it can since it uses both usb 3 with power delivery and regular usb I would be able to charge both at the same time but the controller battery lasts a VERY long time and so I haven't had to worry about it yet. Thanks very much for the kind words
@@JakeSloan Great review! Can the mini 2 handle itself in the alaska winds on a windy day? What about the mini 1?
The video has just begun, but omg I have to stop and say you are so very lucky to be in such a beautiful place!
Thanks and yes I am!
where in Alaska is this place? Such a beautiful place.
@@linghannkim2439 The hiking trail is just when you finish going through the tunnel to Whittier on the right, it leads to Portage glacier which is where he was at. One of the most beautiful places in Alaska.
I’ve been flying mine in cold weather too, got some pretty good footage with the winter scenes. Also thanks to you my hand launching/landing game is getting better :)
awesome!
Beautiful cinematography
Thank you!
Wow amazing footage brother well done! ... Hopefully it fits in the Xmas stocking.
Thank you and I think it will fit!
Great review Jake. Especially the test in cold weather Living in Northern Ontario we have several months of below 0 or 32 f. My jjrc x9p shakes and shimmys in the cold and battery life is short. This mini 2 did a great job in my opinion
It did really well. Impressively actually considering how small it is and how much the original mavic air struggled.
Spectacular shots! Was a visual treat for sure. Thanks for the review.
Thank you very much!
The scenery are amazing and the music put the kick to it. Good job
Thank you
Bam, bam, bam!!
I love how you hit the high points and low points of the mini 2 without dragging them on
and making the viewer lose interest.
I also liked that you mentioned even though it does not have to be registered, at least here in the states, that the pilot still has to obey all the rules.
Being able to take off and land using your hand is awesome because it has a very low profile when taking off from the ground so this way you won't have to add any extra weight with extended landing legs.
I have the mini 2 but bought it just before the monsoon season here in Washington state. 🤣
So I am looking forward to doing some flying once the weather permits.
fantastic!!
Great footage! The drone does look pretty nice.
Thanks a lot!
Great aircraft. I like the upgrades they made to the little guy, thanks for sharing Jake.
me too and thanks Chris!
Really good, thanks for all the physical effort to make this film !
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching
Flew mine two days ago negative 20 good to go!
Awesome!!! I flew mine at -12 today 😁
Props do not get brittle in colder temps?
Wow! But the spec says 0c only? Any tricks to make it fly below 0c? Will the battery be damaged?
@@nelsoncruck2458 the battery shouldn't be damaged but it will affect the battery life of that flight.
Hey does it record audio as well as video?
10:20 looks amazing!
Thank you!
Thanks Jake! I’m up in NH and had concerns about flying in winter in the White Mtns. Looking forward to purchasing & flying!
Excellent! Have fun
Thanks for the video tutorial, a huge help when deciding which drone to buy! I’m really into videography using my GoPro but wanted a small and ‘simple’ drone to take it to the next level. Appreciate it 👍🏼
Excellent!!
Just bought this as a Christmas present from myself, can't wait to try it out!
Awesome
Alaska is so beautiful
It is an amazing place!
Wow! Amazing footage!
Thanks!
Great video! Lots of information in such a short amount of time! A lot of information that I haven't yet seen in other videos regarding the Mavic Mini 2, so I'm definitely leaving a LIKE and COMMENT. Thanks a lot.
Thank you very much! Cheers
All I know is that I want one! Cool video, thanks.
LOL thanks Will
Great vid. Why does the background footage look chopping when it's circling around you? Is it the frame rate?
It is partly the frame rate (some clips I didn’t slow down to match the 24fps) and partly I didn’t have any ND filters for this drone yet.
The ND filters would fix the problem. It's not the fault of the drone, just the way cameras work.
Beautiful. Nice shoots
thank you!
Amazing shots! Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks!
I flew my Mavic 2 Pro in negative temperatures in Fairbanks in November 2018. Only issue I had was the GPS, on some days, seemed jump around a bit. So my drone would randomly drift. It even says in the manual that the Mavic 2 cannot use GPS within the polar regions. So yeah, be careful when flying in Alaska. In my experience, there's good days and bad days.
exactly right! the mavic 2 pro is capable of much colder temps than this little guy but it's always good to be aware of your battery temps when flying in cold weather. The GPS signal gets more and more shifty as you get closer to the poles and makes life interesting up here lol. Cheers
Struggles on dynamic range? That shot with half dark half bright going over the mountains looked amazing
Agreed lol. And really it only struggles compared to other drones that are 5-10x more expensive
Amazing!!! I’d love to visit Alaska one of these days
Definitely put it on your list!!
Awesome post, thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
Do you think they will add the active track later?
I don't think they will but you can use a tracking mode using Litchi app
@@JakeSloan hopefully they upgrade for the new mini 2.
@@ListenandLearnEnglish This is the new mini two he’s reviewing sir
@@A-mechanics-review-4U I know. It could be a software update
@@ListenandLearnEnglish It probably will never get official active track because the mini series lacks Obstacle avoidance. Otherwise you can risk collisions very easy just off the auto pilot, Sign posts trees etc
You made that take-off look so effortless as if you were just about to fly a paper plane. Is it really that easy?
IT is pretty easy, with a little bit of practice
Sim.
Um drone tão pequeno, mas tão eficiente. Gostei dessa nova versão do Mavic Mini 2.
Cheers!
Phenomenal review and shots! Ty!
thank you
Your video was amazing but I have a question, I have heard that the mini2 doesn’t work on temperatures under 0 degrees, but you fly it in Alaska. At what temperature were you and did you had any problems?
No I did not and you can see more details on that in this video here: ruclips.net/video/9m0FbTm_q88/видео.html
I flew my Spark in a -10 degree weather luckily the battery survived.
WOW that is cold. I have flown my Mavic 2 pro in -40 but I have yet to try the Mini 2 in temps that cold. Cheers!!
@@JakeSloan Can’t wait to test the Mini 2 in extreme cold weather here in Chicago.
Mad love! Just got mine today!
Awesome
So cool, Jake!!
Thanks!
It looks cold but seeing you with that jacket open i get mixed feelings 🤪
Nice video 👌
Lol I was warm from the hike to get there.
For a 4k cam with 10k range at under 250g and $500, I could let all the downsides pass.
me too!
EXACTLY THIS!... it's weight in pure gold
Excellent review! Thanks for this.
Thanks
Hi Jake, very much enjoyed this video. You obviously ROCK IT with the location but much more than that, your filming, content delivery and editing are first rate. Bravo, grateful to have stumbled on you today.
Thank you very much! Glad you found my channel
I cried when I saw what’s in this guys backpack
LOL why?
@@JakeSloan so jealous
I wish it had the active tracking. Ill just stick with my Parrot for now
me too. if it did this would be a nearly perfect travel drone
You have Litchi app for active track. (have to pay for it)
The litchi app has active track but it’s not supporting the mini 2 for now
@@bennyvanbael7247 It supports active track if you sign up for the beta program.
I had Parrot Anafi, loved it, the only thing is range, if Parrot makes something like Occusync, i will buy Parrot again for sure!
Such a fantastic place! Thanks buddy, stay healthy and happy!! Take care and make more videos!!
Thanks!
Wow amazing footage
Thanks!
Got mine for a spin today, it's ok. I think the size is the best thing about it, but all those missing features that Air 2 has, it is pretty annoying.
True but for the size it’s really fantastic. I agree though it would be nice to have a few more features.
@@JakeSloan we always have to compromise, dont we?😆 I was thinking to up my game with my hiking videos, but I don't want to have clips where one can see me steering, without tracking it's tough. I think I'll still keep it though, and in the future get one with more features.
@@MichalOlender I can keep it for you @Michal. I will love and cherish it. Send it to me please. 🙏🏾

I’m so stupid.. I was wondering when he would get to where he was going so he could start the test lol!!!
Rofl this is the best comment!!
Thanks so much for a beautiful video with wonderful images. Your shots and review of the mini 2 is so helpful. I plan on buying this drone once I start traveling again. Just remarkable how portable it is for the image quality that it shoots. I'm ok with its limitations since I want to shoot just a few brief scenes, carefully, per documentary. My dad was, briefly, an expedition photographer in Alaska. Such a beautiful State, and I still have not had a chance to see this wonderful environment. Thanks so much again for this gorgeous vlog!
I agree it has limits but I am ok with them since this is such a small light package and easy to add to any camera bag or backpack. Cheers.
Great review ! Really helps to see these visually amazing shots captured with the drone. I will def be considering purchasing the mini 2.
Thanks Elle
How did your phone handle the cold? That’s my biggest challenge.
Thankfully the remote battery kept it alive long enough to film this stuff lol. In the past my phone has made it for maybe 10-15min before it dies
Hand warmers are the best way to keep batteries warm, but at -40 even they don't do that much.
Its ok, just dont use iphones, theyre not made for cold enviroments
@@kkonaa8177 LOL only phone I have.
@@phil.lariviere try to get warmer or fly from car
I think with Black Friday coming up they might have deals on it
Not gonna happen
I think they might but usually with their new releases they don't offer very big deals but you never know and its only a few more days to wait and see
Last year with mini 1 no deal on black Friday

Great to see a behind the scenes… interesting to see how the different scenes are linked together by the employer (railway/golf/canyon)… didnt seem like a film set so maybe a travel getaway ad for the railways… going outdoor for adventures… but yes re your comment on how you approach your work and the day in a life approach. Enjoy your work Jake, thank you. 🇬🇧
This was for a show that is about areas around the Midwest of interest to people
Great video Jake. The mini handled the conditions in Alaska like a champ!
It did, actually surprisingly well! I was really happy to see that it handled both the cold and the wind without issue so far. The real test will be sub zero temps lol
@@JakeSloan exactly! I have flown for like 25mins (mavic pro 2) 25° degrees Fahrenheit, and in high winds. But I am really concerned to fly when it's REALLY cold. I don't want the chemical reaction in the battery to stop mid flight and result in it crashing down. 😟
Maybe I'm just paranoid since it's so expensive. No problems yet.
Btw GREAT location and great video! 😎💟✅
Very informative, Jake. Thank you!
