    Hello! I hope this is an overview of the papers I have in my studio. I've been waiting for my chiyogami order to arrive but it didn't come in time for filming :( I hope you enjoy, my fellow paper lovers! I'd love to hear about your favorite papers to work with in the comments.
    Some additional notes:
    -Copy paper sold at the office supply stores are not great for writing since they're designed for printing documents. I've seen people mention heavier weight copy papers with a "premium" label being decent for writing though. Test the papers with your favourite pen!
    -If paper grain confuses you, ignore it and make your books! Return to learning more about paper grain when you're ready. I make cross grain journals for myself all the time because there are specific papers I want to use and don't want to waste.
    -Screen printed patterned lokta paper seems to be more durable than unprinted, solid colored sheets, making the solid papers unsuitable for book covers. I've discovered the hard way that after some use, the paper fibers lift easily even after a protective spray coat.
    -You can make your own endpapers with wheat paste and acrylic paint. Check out DAS Bookbinding's tutorial here: • What is Paste Paper an...
    -When I'm looking for a specific type of paper, I'll search for the paper type and weight on Google. You can also search "handmade papers near me" for local shops that sell the large sheets of patterned papers.
    -Different papers react differently to glue. Through trying different papers you'll have experience and understanding of their behaviours and results!

    this was very very helpful! I started bookbinding a few months ago and quickly fell in love. A couple years back I got my hands on an old wallpaper sample book as you'd find in a housewares store. I've been experimenting with using those wallpaper sample sheets for covers, as it makes sense that they might be more durable and even water-resistant.

    one can get book board from slitting the covers of a 3-ring binder! thank you for showing the types of board together, the difference can be hard to understand.

I actually had a question about where you buy your 2 ply crawford thread. I've only been able to find it in 4 ply, but I'm not making exposed spines so I'm worried that would be too thick

    Hi. Love your channel and I am very inspired by it. But I was just wandering how important it is to use the acid free cardboard. I am attempting my first book and I have cardboard leftovers from use in my furniture business(backs for armchairs). But they are not acid free so I was just not sure if I could use it or not? I see some stores sell book-cardboard not acid free, so how important is it? What will happen if I use the non-acid free board and when? Hope you can answer. Sincerely Lillianne

  • @katiehanrahan5293

    Thank you so much! This was very helpful. My favorite (so far) decorative papers are lokta and chiyogami. I get them from Hollander’s and they are beautiful! A question about your watercolor paper: you stated you use hot press paper but many artists prefer cold press. Is there a reason you use hot press over cold press? Just curious. I’ve made a few cold press watercolor journals but have not tried the hot press.

    • @bittermelonbindery
      @bittermelonbindery  Год назад +1

      I use both cold press and hot press! Hot press is just what I had leftover in my studio. I polled my Instagram followers last year and it was almost a 50/50 split, so it seems like each artist has their own preference.

    For a thin paper 52gsm what binding stitch would you recommend in order to make a 365 page journal? 😊

    • @bittermelonbindery
      @bittermelonbindery  Год назад

      Definitely something with a hard back (enclosed spine). If the signatures held together is over 3/4 inch in thickness and has a wedge shape when it's sewn, it may need to be rounded to manage spine swell. And maybe even sewn with supports such as linen tape to support the weight of the text block. I personally haven't made anything viable over 150 pages yet!

  • @orlanswf

    lovely and informative video, as always ❤
    by the way, about the book showcased at 7:05, what's that binding/stitch called? looks like a mix of coptic and japanese binding, and I'd love to try my hand at it!

    • @bittermelonbindery
      @bittermelonbindery  Год назад +1

      It's just a decorative stitch that I add at the very end! Before I complete sewing on the last hole of the cover, I bring the thread to the side and weave through all the holes until I return back to the last hole to finish off on the inside. Hope that makes sense.
      I show it here on my livestream: ruclips.net/user/livexs09xraiU2g?feature=share&t=2484

    How do you keep the paper from bubbling when you glue it? Or is that just the quality of the papers fault

    • @bittermelonbindery
      @bittermelonbindery  Год назад +3

      thin and low quality paper will bubble for sure! also using too much glue or glue that is too watery. brush gently when applying glue. test the paper before using it for a book if you're unsure.
