Thanks. I really hesitate between this one and the deluxe special, cause I don't want a full jazz bass sound, the sound of this bass is not far from a precision no ?
If you use just the neck pickup, it sounds very similar to a Precision bass. Using both pickups gives you the typical Jazz bass sound and using the bridge pickup gives the thinner "Jaco" sound.
Thanks for the answer. Okay, so it is not like my Ibanez sr700 where I have an equalizer (low, medium, hight), here the two volume knob are for each pick ups ? So for pop, rock, rap, and a bit of funk, reggae it worth it? Thanks.
No, the pickups are passive so there's no "boost" for bass or treble. With passive pick ups you can only "cut" frequencies. The thing that makes the stacked knobs special is that you can mix the tone circuit of each pickup separately or together which you can't do with regular Jazz controls. The Flea Jazz will do pop, rock, rap, funk, reggae and even Metal. It's very versatile.
Every time somebody says that there's always somebody naming couple of other bands in a very condescending way. There's no difference between naming two bass player driven bands and naming five. On the whole, there are still very few of them. And by the way, when I think of Iron Maiden it's Bruce Dickinson that comes to my mind first.
Flea is the punk n funk of the band. He and AK create a complementary set of rhythms and stabs. He doesn't just sit in the mix. It also helps he is half naked and doesn't give a F. That could be why he is so synonymous to the term memorable bass player.Great vid looking to buy a jazz thanks Andertons, and thanks FLEA.
I think the Capt was referring to bass players who weren't also the singer, because the average person will think of the singer, regardless of the instrument they play. Lenny, Geddy, Les, etc are signature stylists on the bass, but also are unique vocalists. Flea made his name as a bass player alone. (I will say Steve Harris is the other name that popped into my head.)
People are talking about Lemmy, Macca, Geddy Lee, etc. The difference is that they were/are SINGERS also. RHCP is one of the few mega bands where the bass player is as important as the singer (right now, I can only think of Iron Maiden)
Gustavo P There are plenty of bands that instantly make you think of the bassist when you name them. Of course, for people who like bass, that is. He is a guitarist and I'm pretty confident he can't even play bass, of course he doesn't know any
@@zeusdutta945 I love Muse and they are the definition of how a band should be. Everyone does several things in order to have that big sound they have. But I dont consider Chris as important as Matt Bellamy. Matt is, as far as I know, the creative mind that writes most of the songs and is the lead vocals/guitar player. If Chris leaves the band, Muse will be different, for sure, but it´s not as heavy as if Matt leaves, IMO
howlingmine Lemmy did exactly what he needed to in the context of Motörhead. Was he Victor Wooten, no. But honestly Wooten would have sounded shit in Motörhead.
Nearly bought one of these. Lovely bass for the money and the nitro is great. Ended up springing for the full fat custom shop version but I can say with some certainty it wasn’t worth three times the price. It is nice though.
"I definitely remember the music video from earlier this year 2015-2016 where Flea is suddenly standing there looking bad ass with this bass". I definitely remember almost 20 years ago on Californication's music video.. he was standing there looking bad ass with that exact bass. lol
Quite rare for Andertons to have such a disappointing review of an instrument. Understandably the demonstrator doesn't have to be an expert of the signature artist but Nathan seemed unenthusiastic and negative. Would have benefited from an enthusiastic guitarist like Rob or Pete who could show even an ounce of interest in the instrument. Will search other channels for better!
Well I heard Nathan say he liked the neck, thought the pickups sounded really good, and wouldn’t mind playing this bass at all. Sounded pretty positive to me. Maybe he should have performed a cartwheel to make sure there was no confusion that he thought this was a good bass? 😉
I freaking love the Chilis, Flea is one of my absolute favourites and one of my biggest influences (For bass in general and slap, my fave songs to do are _Higher Ground_, _Can't Stop_ and _Dark Necessities_). Also some of the other really iconic bassists who play these and became one of the "famous" guys in the band are Mark Hoppus (blink-182) and Geddy Lee (Rush)
Power of Equality is one of the best opening tracks on any album, ever. Blood Sugar Sex Magik is a perfect album, and they've been trying to recreate it ever since.
lol they finally did this vid! I've done a review of this bass myself on my music channel (totimusic) and i do quite think it sounds dandy. nice job guys!
Know what you mean, and there is a vid on RUclips about the genius of Paul Macca, but he hasn't done himself any favours with all that crap he has put out, starting back in the latter days of the Beatles.
+Torsten. It's an expression which means he has created a poor image of himself by creating some rubbish songs, despite being a great bass player/singer/songwriter. Too many of his songs sound like they were written for children or geriatrics. It's a shame (in my opinion).
Ndlanding Correct me if I'm wrong but I think you're talking about his earlier songs. I agree that they're very simple and that they don't really have a message but think like rubber soul and every album after that. The songs are so brilliant (Sure, there's a few shit ones aswell)
Was it Stanley Clarke who used to have an additional bass player in his band to provide the proper and necessary rhythm section playing whilst he was busy widdling away on his Alembic? Always made me smile.
Just got one for Christmas from my lovely wife. Flea inspired me to play. First had to get a Stingray which has been my go to bass for all my years. It's a cracking bass. The neck is super fast and it's instant Flea from Stadium Arcadium onwards. A bass that plays and sounds like a far more expensive bass. Sits in my collection very nicely.
Loved Nathan's playing on Higher Ground and on the 'play out.' Just FYI, Captain. It's often very difficult to understand what you're saying into that machine. Would love to get in on the laughter you two share whenever you use it. Looks fun!
The guy who bought the bass didn't just give it to Flea, he wanted to sell it to him (having paid $35,000 for it himself) after having become rather wealthy in the late 90s from the booming internet business and some giant merger or other... He met Flea in Australia, and spoke to him about a deal, Flea in the end offered him a prototype Modulus bass (back when they were his signature basses), and the rest is history. If you Google "flea 61 jazz bass story reddit" you can find the story as told by the guy himself.
The Fender thumb rest was always quirky. When Leo first designed the P Bass and asked players what they wanted, many of them requested a thumb rest. The only problem is that Leo didn't ask what they meant (or what a "thumb rest" even was) so it ended up on the treble side for years. Eventually Fender got the hint and moved it to a much more rational location above the strings (bass side), but tons of basses were made with the rest in the "wrong" place for years. The funny thing is, most bass players tend to find resting their thumb on the edge of the pickups to be preferable, so they'd just take off the rest anyway!
That's not entirely accurate. Back in the day the classic bassplayer would play bass with his thumb. The rest on the "treble side" wasn't a thumb rest. It was a "Tug bar". You'd tug your fingers there and your thumb would strike the strings. Later more people kept moving it to the op and playing with their index and middle finger. Then Fender decided to change it on their 70s models.
I own a mex fender road worn Jazzbass and I think the neck moves a lot.

Dear guys and gals at Andertons, what about doing All About the Bass (or better yet Sounds Like) using the gear of people such as Steve Harris, Geddy Lee, Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, John Paul Jones, Chris Squire, Paul Mccartney and Lemmy? They all have killer bass tones and very easily identifiable sounds. I think it would be a lot of fun for you guys to make and for us to watch. Thanks for the excellent work on your channel. Cheers!
and flea described the 60s J bass beautifully: "this bass, it's been a bass for so long that it's no longer even a tree" also, when you played the bass it didn't really sound like flea, he has a lot of aggression when he plays, a nice raspy almost staccato sound
What should you play on a Flea bass? How about some Ornette Coleman, some Metallica, maybe some Fear, or some Meters? His style is so much more than slap and funk bass, and he's played with and/or been influenced by all of those guys and styles.
So I was out trying new basses looking at the squier, fender elite, pro, and this. I just had the guy hand them to me without looking at what I was playing.. I seriously kept my eyes closed so I could just judge by feel and sound. This thing felt so good and sounded great too. The only thing that felt better was the elite with the c to d neck. The pro has the same neck with tall narrow frets which I do not like on anything but the tele. This thing kinda looks like a dog to me but it plays so sweetly.
It always puzzles me why Flea never had a Modulus Silver/Blue flake signature. Those two basses were iconic during the late 90's into the early 2000's, and the tone he got was so good and so unique it would have made something special.
Hey there's this really underground band called les clay pool whixh has an awesome bass player. Her name is Primus. You guys probably haven't heard of, but should check it out...
The reason for the metal pickup cover was to reduce the audible interference caused by other equipment. These cost about £15 and is the first thing I stick on a new Jazz Bass!
That was fucking painful. I love you gents, I do.. But do your fucking work. The whole video reminded me of when I was in school and the teacher would ask me to explain the story I hadn't read the night before. Blood sugar black chocolate? They had 4 albums prior. And flea has been using this jazz bass in the studio for decades, and on tour for years in fact it's in the Californication video.. so no Fender didn't just jump on it. Smh.

I wish Fender would do some more mexican non-relic'd nitro runs - like the Classic lacquer series. I like 'roadworn' but I'd rather it just happened naturally. I have 12 year old poly guitars that I've played to death, gigs, tours, been knocked over several times, fallen off the stage, blah blah blah - that pretty much look like the day they were born. Would love them to show their history a bit more the way nitro finishes do.
Flea has had this bass for a long time but only after his endorsment with Modulus ended did he play a a whole lot. Some might say that the endorsment eded because of that very bass.
I own this bass and it's BRILLIANT. The stacked knobs give a huge variety of tones. The neck is gorgeous. I can't say enough good things about it.
Thanks. I really hesitate between this one and the deluxe special, cause I don't want a full jazz bass sound, the sound of this bass is not far from a precision no ?

Ian Vaughan I owned one then sold it , missed it that much I had to get another . It’s a keeper !!
Stuart Zender is my go to bass player that pops in my mind. gotta love that funk hes got
"When you think of the band, you think of the bass player almost first...."
Erm, Steve Harris? Les Claypool? Geddy Lee?
Chris Squire and Gene Simmons as well.

I think the Captain was trying to think of Geddy Lee
He mentioned Mark around 2:00, pointed at Nathan and said "obviously dearest Mark". (Mark King is Nathan's older brother, for those who don't know)
Well I never knew that! But looking now there is a definite family/facial resemblance.
I think the Capt was referring to bass players who weren't also the singer, because the average person will think of the singer, regardless of the instrument they play. "Sounds like [Flea] By busting the bank"
Satch Boogie the only expensive thing is the modulus basses and the GK AMPS
Alonso Miranda Well, the bass is 950 and if you put a cab and some pedals, you go over 1500 which is the "without busting the bank" limit
oh i was thinking the "buy busting the bank thing"
Satch Boogie cheapest I've seen this bass is 1,235€ crazy for a Mexican J bass
you only need the bass and a head and cab and a MXR micro amp and you are done
"Saturday Night finger" -Capt. Lee 2017-
Hulk Slayer caught that reference not familiar with that saying. But what do I know? Guess not much.
Got a Flea bass for xmas. A few months on it's awesome. Super fast neck and setup. Pick ups are brilliant. Highly recommend one.
As a canadian Im triggered that Geddy Lee wasnt mentioned
Les clay pool, steve Harris, cliff burton...
Emilio Fedele the trailer park boys would kill him 😂
because lifeson and peart. are as famous as geddy

Will you sell on the flea market?
Hey finally!!! I actually got one for Christmas and I love it. Cool to see you guys doing a video on it.
The point is bassists who are not also the front person. There are plenty of those (i.e. Lemmy, Sting, Geddy Lee, etc)
Lemmy... LEMMY... FOR FUCKS SAKE LEMMY!!!!!!!

Matt Freeman from Rancid is an example of an bass player being a key member of a band. Though that might just be me and my obsession with him.
Caleb McKinney i agree. Although when you think of rancid you tend to think of lars or Tim more often
the real problem is that Rancid are the most overlooked-underappreciated bands in rock music as a whole
It’s not just you mate, I think he’s generally known to be one of the greats, well greats in punk.
my dad was in a band with him before the operation ivy days lmao
I've got one and I absolutely love it. I got mine 300$ off (250 quid) cos it was blemished. :o
Love the dual concentric pots and it feels fabulous.

Eli Joseph Doummar Clapton is probably the best known from the three
I agree, but when there is a talk about most influential bassists, Jack Bruce-in one of the best to mention.
Yeah but do you really think Jack Bruce is more influential than Clapton?
Jeremy Wilson BTW Clapton is my all time favourite guitarist.. but jack was the brain behind cream..
Eli Joseph Doummar I think the relationship between Bruce and Baker drove the band but overall popularity has to go to Clapton.
Steve harris is absolutely the front figure of maiden. Both with his stage presence and his songwriting!
I love how the talk about Dearest Mark even tho nobody outside the UK actually knows who Level 42 is

Mark kings a beast His riddim is so strong

funny thing the only time i have seen flea hold his signature was on the youtube commercial fender did.

You can see Flea playing that bass on the video for Californication from way back in '99.
Love The Captains ad-lib vocals

Might be repeating others, but Flea is playing Jazz bass as early as Californication video. And later in "Can't stop".
when he said of bass player, a bass player that was the image of the band, not precisley for virtousity or anything, i thought Gene Simmons of Kiss

Chris Squier, John Entwistle, and the all powerful LEMMY!

Wasn’t it a cutlass?
Yep originally a cutlass I believe the stickered up one yeah buddy
Robert "Bubby" Lewis. Solo, Player for Lupe Fiasco, Snoop Dogg and a few more. Has sig series on a few brands.
lol, this is choice entertainment.. two guitarists talking out a bass lol. loving it! we bass players are GOD's

"When you think of the band, you think of the bass player first" Motörhead, LEMMY for fuks sake dude
Just completely fuckin forgot about all the famous bassists
The notch is a great idea
Who knew that Andertons had a Flea Circus act? 🤣😂
2023 and this bass costs… tadaaaa…£1400!
want this bass badly!
Rofl!!! .... Nice optional extras!! :)
he has that bass 20 years already
Some top gags from Nathan here - all the funnier because the *two eggs and zest of a lemon* flew right over Herr Kapitän's head.
