Made a gaff this year. Didn't use any tape. Just used Kevlar cord and wrapped it tight. Then used a 2 part loctite epoxy. Saturated it in two coats and the thing is indestructible.
you alright? havent seen you comment in a few months. hope all is well with you and the gang
If you pour boiling water on the paracord it will shrink and be extremely tight.
13:00 Please put a cork or a safety cover over the point so you don't impale yourself like what almost happened here: 13:00
I was thinking the same thing. No way I would work on any custom gaff without protecting the end with a cork or other type of protection.
Try the 3m electrical tape, its waterproof, stretchy and holds really well.
Joe, nice work my dude. Gotta say, with all your pulling around the hook, I was pretty sure at some point you’d impale yourself. But hey, you got through it unscathed. Well done 👍
It wasn’t as close as it looked on film but I was think the same when I was editing haha it looks awfully sketchy
@@joevtfishing an old wine cork would do the trick!
Sick clip. I must have laughed a half dozen times. Keep them coming.
thank you for watching!!
@@joevtfishing Ur a TRIP!!
Take the length of cord you are going to pull back through the wraps and use bowstring wax burnished in with your finger tips or a piece of leather on it before starting to force it back through the wraps. I think you will find it much easier and safer to pull back through.
That painting is amazing.
we tie it off on the rail of the boat "long range" and we use the to pull the line tight around the hook,, soo we let out a shit load of slack tie it off and roll it up on it. Hope That helps with the tighting thing cuz that looks ruff. peaceasy happy gaffin!!!
I appreciate the information, much cheaper than buying one or getting a kit from mudhole.
I've learned from decades of training apprentices, that the reason demonstrations go wrong... just about every time... is that you aren't focused -- only -- on the task. You've added an audience which splits your attention in half, then you're also focused on describing what you are doing, which splits your attention, again. On top of "all that" --- you are also assessing (and critiquing) how well you articulate the lesson, while also assessing how well your student is comprehending the lesson. IT ISN'T MURPHY'S LAW! It's just the division of attention when multi-tasking. So, give yourself a break. You multi-task real gooood....!
Its not bamboo. Its rangoon cane. Best gaffs ever. They float
Calcutta bamboo!
When we were fishing rockcod in California we would use the bamboo and double hook that you would use for like albacore no, Barb we were fishing commercial
Wrap with really heavy braided fishing line, then coat with several coats of epoxy. That way the end doesn't look so bulbous and ugly.
Glad to see you back making videos!
Nice painting
Golf clubs is what we use in the 850:)
thats a really good idea. strong, flexible, and light. you cant go wrong
you should try nuclear grade tape from 3M
The open hook is giving me anxiety
The bamboo is called Kolkata bamboo
pretty sick. should heat shrink everything by the hook to seal the deal
thats actually a really good idea. i might go back to all the gaffs ive done and do that over the wrap. thanks for the idea... well now that i think about it, it may weaken it over time bc it wont dry as fast. i still want to try it with one just to see how itll do
Cool, great DIY info. Love your videos, keep it up!
thank you for watching!
Hey where can you buy the bamboo
Awesome video!!
Great video on making the gaff, next video should be on making that badass decaf folgers Fern planter JK. Great video, you really need to get outta the house and back on the water. You ever do any sheephead or flounder videos up your way.
haha its a cheap plant pot ok. no i dont really inshore videos bc it blows up spots. i tried to make one last month and it didnt go well, i deleted it after a day and a half so i wont be making any more of them
Pretty unsafe, maybe tell your vewiers to put a cap on that hook so they don't gaff themselves. Otherwise a very good video. Great idea.
What type bamboo is it
i need a gaff... i'm so doing this. thx....
Joe,. I recently found your channel and have really been enjoying seeing you fishing our local waters. we are currently revamping our boat and hope to be ready to go by April or so for the dolphin run. Do you know anywhere in Jacksonville to source that bamboo? We want to make a couple gaffs ourselves.
Not sure of anyone local that sells it, I’m sure you could find some on eBay
Was anyone else cringing waiting for him to put a gaff through his hand when he was pulling the tag end through?
A guy doing a fishing gear video doesn’t have a needle nose anywhere to be found?
Still don’t know where to get bamboo?
Frank's Cane and Rush Supply.
Dollarama sells it.
Are you on Instagram
yes I am, @joevt_fishing
Joe VT Fishing just subscribed. You’ll see us @girls_can_fish a ten year old girl doing great things in southeast Georgia about 45 min from Jax. Your videos are great
