How Does Expanded Polystyrene EPS Foam Come to Life?
How does Expanded Polystyrene EPS Foam Geofoam come to life? It starts out small. The EPS beads (resin) before they get to the manufacturer are processed in reactors. The beads then begin a multi-step process which starts at the pre-expander. It is here where the beads begin their amazing physical transformation. This is where the pentane gas inside of the beads turns from a liquid into a gas. The polystyrene sits on the floor and the steam comes up from the floor to react with the pentane that makes the beads expand. When the beads get conditioned and worked then the beads get soft and begin to expand with the pentane gas that is released. The beads ultimately grow to 40 times their original size. The machine can be set for different receipts based on the amount of beads used. A lighter mixture would be used for packaging materials. A denser and tougher foam will be used for road use. The higher the density, the stronger it is, the more weight there is, the more wear and tare it can have. The beads then take a break in storage silos where they lose some of their pentane gas, making them easier to mold into their solid form. The block mold is where all of the action takes happens for the foam's final metamorphisms. It is where the hyperactive beds begin to take on their new role as usable durable foam. The beads are now put together with heat and steam, and the beads are going to want to expand, but there is nowhere for it to go so it is going to mold and fuse itself together. Then you will have this sold block when you are done. They are now tough enough to support major highway projects or delicate enough to be sliced down for packing materials.
