      I did the exact same thing after this greenhouse collapsed in a heavy rainstorm three weeks after I set it up. After spending about the same amount of money the greenhouse cost, it was restrengthened with cattle fencing. It could not handle the last ice storm and collapsed again. If I had to do it over again, I would not have bought this and would have made my own strong frame out of wood. Yeah his greenhouse has zero structural integrity.

      Did you put the panels between the framework and the cover to help w/ sagging or is the framework on top of the panels? I’ve been thinking of adding panels to mine also

    • @grandmaletta1432
      @grandmaletta1432 2 года назад +3

      The panels are on the inside of the frame. I didn't want added friction on the plastic. It does keep the cover from sagging. It's held up to our 50 mph winds and snow.

  • @rhulse8904
    @rhulse8904 2 месяца назад +3

    You can use 3/4" up to 1.5" pvc, grey conduit or even black water pipe for the additional ribs to add rigidity and support for the cover, the grey conduit or black pipe is probably best because it is uv resistant and won't become brittle like the white pvc will but you will need a barrier between any plastic pipe and the plastic cover as most plastic pipes give off chlorine gas and will degrade the plastic cover, duct tape or aluminum tape will work as a barrier. Also, if you build a wood frame out of 2x6's up to 2x12's standing on edge to sit the hoophouse on (anchored to the wood frame of course) you can not only get the cover a lot tighter but gain much needed height and it adds a tremendous amount of structural stability in high winds. Using 1/2" to 1' thick wood strips to attach the cover flaps to the wood frame, a wood frame will also eliminate the need to bury the flaps and anchor them with cinder blocks or heavy stones. You can anchor the wood frame to the ground if desired but not necessary as the wood frame will be quite heavy especially if using 2x8" up to 2x12" treated lumber. My hoophouse is 10'x28' and 7.5' tall and I used 2x8's for the frame making it a total of 8 feet 2 inches tall which makes a huge difference for plants such as tomatoes and okra which easily get over 6.5 feet tall which was a problem I had with my first hoop house. Another thing, regarding your video on how to prolong the life of your greenhouse, you need to spray the mesh windows heavily with the protectant because the mesh material is not uv resistant at all and will deteriorate in just one season, at least that was my experience with my first hoophouse. I'm thinking once the mesh windows on my new hoophouse do deteriorate I can replace them with residential window screen material and attach it to the cover with hot glue. I'll have to think on that a little more and cross that bridge when I get to it. Another side note, you can use the 303 protectant or any other uv protectant like Armor All to prolong the life of belts, hoses, rubber door seals, rubber O rings and even tires on cars, motorcycles, boats, ATV's, RV's and bicycles. For example, if you have to replace any belts, hoses or rubber seals on your car, motorcycle, boat, ATV, RV or bicycle soak them in the uv protectant for 15 to 30 minutes before installation and it will double or triple their life. Hope this helps and happy gardening!

    I purchased a similar one from Amazon after watching some of your videos. I tried to overbuild it, full solid cinderblock base, added EMT support, door and wall on the north side, insulation on sides. I've been trying to get it to hold heat better but tonight being the coldest night all winter has put it to the test. It is 24 F outside and 32 F in the greenhouse. I have extra tarps around it, 3 strands of incandescent Christmas lights, and a heating cable meant for deicing roofs on the ground. I am happy with my purchase, spent more on adding to it. If I knew it wasn't good enough to insulate passively through a moderate freeze I probably would have built my own. I love the water heater ideas but am yet to find a good vessel. I am also considering your buy two strategy. I sure wish the manufacturers would sell just the top. I think a big blanket on top would help trap heat. As it warms up I want to try shade cloth over the plastic, maybe frame the windows with wood and mesh. I always wonder what zone you are in. Thanks for all your innovative videos.

It slowly weathered and suffered some damage through snow season and heavy winds but i was amazed at how well it did through it all. If i just took the cover off through the winter it would probably still be fine. You could replaced the cover with plastic later too. Although at the cost its hard to beat these options

The cover lasted just 6 months but the company sent me a free replacement and it’s still on at the moment some 2 1/2 years later it is now starting to leak though but I’ll simply skin the tunnel with a ‘proper’ professional cover as the frame is so sturdy. My tunnel came with doors both ends but unfortunately they don’t make the same model now. Wouldn’t grow without one now cheers 🍻

    I planned on doing the same as you and removing the plastic during the warmer months and then reinstalling it come late fall. I wouldn't recommend this Greenhouse in high wind or large snow load areas. I anchored mine with earth anchors and ratchet straps. The cover has bricks all the way around because my area has higher than normal wind. I recommend tucking the bottom plastic flaps under the greenhouse and then strapping the greenhouse down to hold the cover on in higher wind situations. If the cover is lose rain will collect and could cause frame failure so keep that in mind as well.

You aren't just limited to what most kits limit you to. I'm making one this year 10'x20' and got a 6mil 25'x40' sheet of plastic for 110 bucks that will cover it no problem. Wonderful information! I'm 3 years in for this greenhouse. The 1st year I had the same size, unfortunate learning experience. We had 70+ mph winds in March that year and it didn't survive. The zippers seemed to take the damage first and after that it didn't take long for it rip off. After some thought and a new plan, I ordered the same greenhouse, just a bit smaller. We set it up with the north end next to a railroad tie support wall that was already in place in our yard. We set t-posts on the inside corners, & secured it that way. Since my large greenhouse came apart where the poles go together, I used gorilla tape on all the junctions and corners before I put the greenhouse material over it, and then went back and reinforced all the corners of the cover where it rubs on the poles. This is the 2nd year for it and we have another on order to set up next to it. I set the bottom edges the same way you have, but I used cattle panels to fence it in and help keep the wind from getting under it. I like your door idea and hopefully will be doing something similar this summer for it. Thanks for your video! It's nice to see others ideas.

    Nice! Thanks. I’m slightly jealous. How much did the greenhouse cost?

    Have you had any problems with the greenhouse getting too hot during the day? I bought a 6x8 polycarbonate greenhouse and I have a shade cloth curtain inside, and I ran a small fan on a timer. I have to open the top vent and front door everyday because the temperature will get over 110°. Outside temperatures have been under 70°.

    I know the FL sun destroys everything. I wonder how it would hold up in the South. I have seen them on Amazon. Thanks for the info.

      They last about 3 years if you take the fabric off in the summer & replace with shade fabric. The framework holds up for longer. It's the fabric cover that deteriorates. I'm in NW Florida. I've had 2 of the smaller ones. Definitely add the extras like more hoops in between or use cattle panels to strengthen the structure. We use long screw in ground anchors & rope to hold the structure in place. Replace rope yearly. Use cement blocks to hold the fabric down. Take the cover off for hurricanes.

    I just grabbed one of these, the 12x7x7. Brain storming my flooring now. I already have some black tarp but I'm worried about water puddling.

    We bought this exact same greenhouse based on your recommendation. Ours was up for 24 hours and we got 20 mph winds overnight and the roof supports bent and the north side almost completely collapsed. We had it anchored with screw in anchors and laid haybales all around it on each side to weight the sides down. Thankfully, Amazon accepted it as a return, but we have yet to receive our refund. I'm glad that yours is working well, but if you don't have substantial wind breaks then I would look for another solution. We are currently building a hoop house with cattle panel and a 2 ft wood frame.

    Thank you so much for this update on your green house. I didnt see the original but will go look for it. I have been looking at greenhouses for over a year now but like you I read all the comments. And that is why I havent purchased one yet... that is until now and I have already clicked your links and added it and the ground screws to my basket. By the way, there is also a coupon attached to it so there is an even better incentive to purchase now. I think it was 15% off but I chose the smaller option and not sure it will be available on the larger ones. Oh by the way, can you share where you got the hot tub from?

    I’m thinking that even when that second plastic cover I ‘done’ that you could easily put greenhouse plastic on it.

  • @Engwadur

    that probably also helps to conserve electricity by having the hot tub in there.

    Apparently the manufacturer in China chose not to use material that is UV resistant. We've had our Quictent greenhouse for 1 year and the window screens have disintegrated already and the door zippers have already done what cheap zippers do. Don't get your hopes up too high on the quality.

    Sadly... I rent a small place and the backyard is a pool and a small area but it is slopped concrete. I still bought a small green house. Because where I live in Texas, we get high winds. I used pvc pipe in between the metal bows and I have a 55 gallon metal drum in the corner to hold it down. For winter, I bought extra greenhouse plastic and put it over and then used husky tie down to keep the plastic on to help with the heat.
    Not having soil to put a green house on is NOT ideal, but it is doable. With a heater on.... the coldest it got was down to 45 degrees and that was on a 17 degree early morning. Otherwise, I still have peppers growing in it and have my some of my small citrus trees in it.

    My polytunnel cover, in a really sheltered garden, only lasted 2 years before the little plastic panes between the green threads started to fall out, and it became self-watering every time it rained. :( So be prepared to buy a new cover every few years, would be my advice.

    My hubby bought me one.. But sadly the winds way out here in the middle of the country destroyed it within the first year.. Not the cover.. The frame broke.
