For fine hair like ours, I just realized protective styles with added hair is a NO GO. They cute, they fly, but my hair be going bye bye and they aren't worth it lol. Wig life is the only life for me now (I never use glue or gel to tack them down)
FACTS type 4 hair doesn't do well in protective hairstyles ....the only ones that work for type 4 hair is twisting the strands ,wigs with NO GLUE OR GEL and sone crochet styles thats it
Same for me. I had to stop years ago. I can do crochet, but only keep them in for a couple of weeks. Which can be a waste at times so I just end up only doing them during the summer months.
I definitely did have some box braids that wreak havoc on my edges, that was when I decided that protective styles are not very protective at all and said no more. I just wash and conditioned and wore wash n goes or twists out , my edges have since recovered.
The protective styles *you* get installed don’t protect *your* hair. Most Braiders don’t give a damn about your hair or your hair’s health, and want to grab every strand & follicle into a braid, even those edges. Speaking up and saying ‘don’t touch my edges’, or better yet braiding your hair yourself (RUclips University taught me) will keep your edges from being damaged.
@@Goodshihh Same. Protective styles for me truly aren’t protective and actually do more harm than good when worn for the long-term, but in the short-term it’s a way for me to not have to deal with my hair if I’m going to be super busy with other things.
I did constant protective styling over the course of about 7yrs.. Would keep my style in 4-5 wks, wear my hair down a week and do it again.. I did this until the shops closed down in the panni.. My hair at the time I stopped "protective styling" was to my natural waist.. I noticed after a few weeks of wearing my hair free that it didn't have the same life it once had.. I did all I could with it for about a year then finally went to see a curl specialist instead of just my regular stylist.. Because now I wanted to see them curls, the way I used to.. I was diagnosed with extensive cuticle damage and dehydration.. Though I washed my hair weekly while styled and took out monthly, for my hair, that was a disaster.. All those inches I grew and was able to retain were useless.. Leading me to a big chop in Oct 2021.. And where my profile picture is from.. So though I had some new growth and didn't have to chop my hair all the way off, I did lose at least 12-15inches of hair.. I'm now on a health as well as growth journey, washing my hair twice a week, using botanical gels, styling in solely wash and go's.. And my hair is flourishing.. It is now looking like the head of hair I'd had as a teen.. I'm now nearing 40 and only about 6months into a brand new hair journey.. If nothing else, this panni made me relearn how to truly take care of my hair.. Silver lining.....
Yes I know the feeling. When we start a new hair journey, we need to concentrate on prevention which is always better than cure. I have been growing my natural hair for five years and my hair is not in good shape. Sound crazy, but may as well just get a relaxer.
@@beverleyharris6572 For me, when my hair was healthy relaxers weren't compatible.. I definitely wouldn't have put one on my damaged hair.. So a significant chop was really my only choice.. Thinking about the chemical burns and dealing with the newgrowth makes me anxious.. Lol.. But I get where folks are coming from with wanting to find what's easiest.. My wash and go set takes me about 1.5hrs start to finish, that's wash, style, and sitting under the hooded dryer.. And I have shake and go hair all the days in between my washes.. So that's been my saving grace..
All my protective styles damaged my hair because i was never putting my hair’s health first. I would leave braids and crochets styles in for 2-3 months to get my moneys worth and my fine thin delicate hair really can’t handle that. Also was too lazy to properly remove frontal wigs and literally just ripped out my whole hairline. Im learning from my mistakes and listening to my hair now.
I have the feeling we all kind of have experienced the same thing and we learned these lessons the hard way. Some have still not got the point yet so we blessed 🙌🏾
Yes Sis!!! I trusted a hairdresser to do me a sew-in weave. It was my first time both having a weave and using that hairdresser... Not only did she make me look more Yardie than the compere in the film Dancehall Queen, she did it way too tight and charged me more than her original quote... I couldn't bear the pain and took it out after a few days. Half my scalp came out with it too. I rectified the problem by sticking to doing my own braids and NEVER having a weave again.
Let's get rid of the myth: braiding is NOT a protective hairstyle. I remember sitting at the salon and watching 90% of ladies after the removal of braids have obvious hairline/bald spots from the tension of the style. The longer they kept braiding the more their hairline would go further north and the texture get more rough and thinner. Like what you like but be prepared for the consequences.
I have seen so many people growing their hair with braids for years and when they take it out and you see how short there hair is, you ask what happened ?
I disagree. It depends on how delicate your hair is and how the hair is added in. If you cant handle braids on your edges, either dont do them or don't allow your stylist to put tension on your hairline. Braids have been the best thing for me personally.
THANK YOU. I'm glad people are finally talking about this. I think braids without added hair can be protective *if* the person braiding is really gentle (tbh I don't think many braiders are gentle). But box braids, though very beautiful, are not the answer for many of us. People claim box braids grow their hair but I honestly believe most of us actually have fine hair and it's mostly only coarse-haired people that can see that type of progress from it.
Yup! Back to back braided protective styles broke my hair pretty bad. I am now trying to nurse it back by weekly deep conditioning and VERY low maintenance.
I've never had those kind of cornrows as they do look like they pull, But I had box braids and a whole plat fell off, I have a perfect square of baldness that I'm trying to nurse back 😔 taking its time but getting there. Thanks for sharing as Always and have a week as beautiful as your soul ❤
I once left braids for 3 months and my hair was so thin after so I cut it. A lot of us fine haired 4c can not do that. Coarse hair people can and retain lots of length. My hair is super thick now about shoulder length and I only wear wash and go's now with no gel or maybe a custard.
Even though some can go 3 months id still not recommend it, it gets really nasty at that point, some of us natural need to start focusing more on the hygiene of our scalp and hair rather than length
I used to redo my braids every six weeks and it took ages for me to see the smallest of results. Since I took the time to actively research and then plan my hair journey, I started to add a few extras to my routine and it worked a treat. When lockdown first happened, my hair was in a braided style and was due a redo. The hair shops had closed so I couldn't get what I needed. Because of this, I kept my braids in for approximately 5/6 months, but made sure I was spritzing my scalp with apple cider vinegar and water then applying a little oil on a regular basis... When I finally got to take my braids out, I was shocked at how much thicker and longer she had become!!! I've been keeping my braids in for months at a time; doing the same scalp routine ever since and have witnessed hair growth like never before😍👍🏽!!!
Three months in braids? Were you washing, moisturising while in the braids? I have fine hair strands (fine hair is not thinning hair) in the middle and back of my head and it thrives in braids aka when I leave my hair alone (with a washing & moisturising routine while braided) 4c hair tends to love being left alone but hydrated and braids allow me to do that, but not 3 months long.
@@serenamitchel3585 😨 did u say 5-6 months?! Guurrlll no 😵💫🤢🤢 stop it before u catch a fungal infection or something! I know u be itching like a mug 😆 Nah but fr ACV is not a CLEANSER, but an ACIDIFIER. It doesn’t remove sweat, dust & all that oil u keep putting on your scalp. U could be doing the same process since u really like it, but maybe for 2-3 weeks max, then I actually shampoo & deep condition your hair! Hygiene first IJS 🤷🏾♀️
@@serenamitchel3585 Something to keep in mind is you normally redid your hair every 6 weeks, but the next time you waited 5-6 months, so of course you’re going to notice more growth because you waited longer to check your hair. You actually would’ve gotten the same results if you had continued redoing your hair every 6 weeks, but you wouldn’t have noticed as huge a difference because you were checking your hair so often. If redoing every 5-6 months works better for you, keep doing it, but I worry about your new growth tangling up and causing single strand knots because it happened to me, and I had to cut a lot of my hair to fix the problem which set me back. Also, ACV is very acidic which is not ideal for the scalp/hair, and it’s not a long-term replacement for shampoo.
I had some corn rows with feed in hair. Those things were soooo tight that I could barely close my eyes. Lol. The breakage when I took them out was too much. I was so mad at myself for allowing her to braid my hair that tight. Never again. That was about 2 years ago. I have had braids since but I am my own advocate.
I got breakage along my edges from back-to-back knotless braids installs. I now ask the braider to not make them so tight around my hairline, leave out my baby hairs, and I limit the number of braid installs to twice a year. I use an ayurvedic and JBCO oil blend on my edges and they have recovered nicely.
Loosing my edges w box braids for years unfortunately. Since I went natural I tried them again and had bald spots. They've finally grew back in thank God! I decided I am not messing w fake hair and I am no longer doing any tension styles. My hair has been on its best behavior 🤗❤️!
Honestly learning how to master a protective style that truly protects is key, using less hair is key, loose roots, and tight up dos is key, I learnt the hard way
The lace fronts are making me a little thin around the edges. I started using henna once a month and I use spray-on castor oil. So far so good. I like the restoration routine you used. Your hair didn't shed too bad and still looks healthy.
I used foam to give me a sleek ponytail look. Came out great. Liked it so much I applied foam several more times during the week. Big mistake. Caused tangles and what felt like locked clumps. Lost a lot of hair. Babying my hair for it to be restored now.
I experienced damage from a sew-in. Could have been due to the fact that I was transitioning and hadn't cut my relaxed ends off yet. I love the braids you wore!🥰
Haha I got box braids about 7 years ago and they ripped almost half head off. Never got box braids again since that day. Now I did get some knotless braids done in Kenya three mos ago and they haven’t damaged my edges at all because they start the braid with your natural hair and the braiding hair is soft and light weight 👍🏾
The fact that these styles are called "protective" is weird to me....they dont protect our hair at all. Theres always some damage done when wearing braids with added hair. A real protective style is one that entails ONLY YOUR NATURAL HAIR :) I have fine 4b/4c hair and a twist style with just my hair works wonders as a "protective" style
It’s highly dependent on the grade of hair you have. My aunt has super coarse hair that is incredibly strong. She can wear braids for months and hardly get any breakage. I on the other hand can wear braids for a week and then have clumps of hair fall out when I try to take it out because I have very fine strands. So it’s a protective style to some…but not all naturals. I would also say there are differences even within 4c. Someone can have the coil pattern of 4c but have extremely dense and coarse hair. Hence, you really have to look closely at an influencer’s texture to determine if they actually have the same type of hair as you.
I got large senegalese twists that took my edges with it. I already had fine edges so it definitely exacerbated the problem. I used jamaican black castor oil on my edges and it really helped!
I have 5 weeks braid rule and learn this the hard way in high school in the 90s when wore my braids for 3 or 4 months. I had to cut my braids out most of the hair on the top of my head. Also have no gel, sprits and mousse rule for with my braids have I tell this to anyone who braids my hair that stuff destroys my scalp.
Yes,Yes and another Yes. I had jumbo Knotless braids in my hair for about 6weeks. The cutest style that only took 1hour to install. But the problem I experienced with take down - each braid was locked at point where the added hair met my hair. I reached out to the owner of the braiding shop and told her I believe that the Jam they used caused this to happen and was pretty much dismissed. I left a lengthy review and now refuse to go back to braiding shops. I think they do more damage than good and I spend a lot to time, money and effort on my natural coils.
Yes, yes!! I just took out my “protective” style and I suffered some damage to my edges too. Started using herbs and will start back to my weekly wash day as well. Thank you for sharing with us!! We LOVE you Nappy Fu😍
I definitely screamed "old school" when you pulled out the sulfur8 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Whoever that stylists was that did your hair is Ughhhhh but you're definitely going to grow it back!! I haven't had any damage from styles but a product almost ruined my ends took me a year to fully recover
Yes I experienced some havoc on my hair with Crochet braids TWICE!! First time the person putting them in didn’t care about my hair at all as she was putting in the crochet and puking the synthetic hair through I heard so much hair popping. I told her that I heard my hair snapping and she was like oh no that is my nails! Nope I was right ...I had SO MUCH BREAKAGE!! That was in my relaxed days. In my natural days I had a friend put in crochets and I asked her not to braid too tight. She said well you want your style to last right? Well it lasted but two sections of my edges didn’t! Had a bald spot on each side!! Never again!!
Definitely had my edges snatched from wigs and weaves. It got really bad when I started braiding my hair too. I just stopped using extensions completely and used a derma roller tool to get my edges back. This worked miracles and have a full hairline xx
@@MT-yx5cu I get them from any online beauty store or even amazon or ebay. Skin Medix is one I use mainly. I used a size 1mm no bigger than that to avoid scalp damage.
I still do protective styles (crochet, twists with added hair) but I do them myself. I leave all my edges out just cause I don't want them to have any type of tension. My styles are super loose and stay in for 3 weeks. I have thin hair but I notice if I do this, it works for me.
Never leave a "protective style" in that long even if you're washing it in between. One longer than a month. You'd be better off just twisting your own hair and leaving it in for a few weeks particularly if your hair is fine.
Top knot bun. Yes I wore it too much it was a go to for me. I added the marley hair, wigs but for me it stunted my crowns hair growth. I no longer do this and Thank God I am on a healthier life and hair journey. Drinking water green juices, herbal teas, healthy meal plan, exercise. So important for health overall. Low manipulation styles and seasonally trim my ends.Peace and Love!!
I got a sew ONCE in 2015 for prom and that was the reason for a big chop. Then did braids and that was damaging I haven’t worn weave in almost a year I style my hair in twist. I’m loving it it. I’m 25 so being around women my age who wear wigs and have their hair done 25/8 does make me want to go back to getting braids but my hair is going to thank me 2 yrs from now lol ❤️
Honey no more regular braids for me. Knotless braids are the new way. I hear people say they only last for about one month, but I make mines last for two, as my money got to stretch. I keep my hair as neat as possible. But Most of All, I keep my edges, matter of fact, I keep all my hair.
Good day, have you tried deep conditioning before you braid? Once the style is completed are you using tea rinses, herbs infused oils, a bit of grease/butter & a witch hazel based spritz to treat scalp all to maintain your healthy hair journey.
@@LRH1 Hello, I haven't tried the tea rinse but it is on my list. I deep condition and use the hair and scalp tonic by Tiba Naturals (my hair loves that stuff). I also have a mango butter and oil mix that I use but I also use Chebe hair butter by Camille rose. When I take my braids down I although my edges are intact, there's breakage around my crown and my hair becomes significantly thinner.

Wow I didn't know you were still on youtube. I used to watch you yearsss ago but I'm sorry to see your hair hasn't really grown, have you ever considered getting locs?
Have you tried to wear different styles of headwraps to give your hair a break? I have been wearing headwraps from The Wrap life and they are perfect for this season I have been in where I have embraced minimalism with my hair.
Yes Gurl .... I know what you talkin bout ... That was the white gurl brush LoL ... I feel you too when you said you gotta go back to what you used ta do ... Thats when my hair feel its best
My sister has experienced great success with using weaves and braids with added hair to grow her hair, but for some reason these styles destroy my hair, even though we both have the same hair. I prefer wash n’gos and loose twists and my hair does just fine.
Ya!... as pretty as those braiding styles look... attaching braiding hair to 4C hair or any tension pulling hair styles is a no-no :( . Only puff/ponytail pieces, half-wigs, or very, very short-term wig-wearing that is not glued or sewn down shouldn't damage our hair. I hate to see all the months or even years of hard work and care it takes to grow 4c hair to a nice n healthy state, to get damaged so easily... ugh! Howeverrrr... you know how to grow hair, so you're good :)
I have had a few setbacks and recovery was always getting back to the basics of aloe vera, a good oil like olive or castor and a good cream. All of the ayurvedic remedies are great too.
Good to see you and hope you enjoyed your travels. The braids were beautiful. I've never had extensions and probably would not try them at this point because I have alopecia.
I used to wear knotless waist length box braids LOL, gave me a bald spot towards the front of my scalp and it still won’t grow back… 2 years now smh. I’ve been wearing glueless closure wigs for a year and a half now and my hair is thrivingggggg. I think honestly that’s really the only protective style you can do with hair that isn’t yours that won’t damage your real hair.
I talked my daughter into letting me twist up her hair because she wasn’t combing it (because when she did comb it she was doing these 12 hour to 2 day marathon treatments that she wasn’t keeping up with). Even after I twisted up her hair she wasn’t combing it so I talked her into splitting the twists into two twists and of course she still was not combing her hair but she did like the clumped look of the untwisted twists so I talked her into making those clumps smaller and now she has locs that she loves! (She does miss a comb and brush ever so often but that is because I had gotten her a wooden brush to use while her hair was still loose and she only got to use it once or twice and she had really liked how it did her hair).
Protective styles are only protective when you have the right person to do it for you. You hsve stylists who will apply just the right tension needed on your edges. If you do your own hair, be extra gentle. I have fine thin hair and in the past, every time I wear a protective style, my edges would disappear plus additional breakages. I did a box braid recently and could not believe how gentle the stylist was. I kept the style in for 9 weeks and my hair grew like magic. My edges thickened as well. For me, what I did differently was left my hair alone. No scalp massages, no moisturizing. Your scalp naturally secretes oils which moisturizes the hair roots naturally. I did have to wash once but after a couple days, natural sebum did the moisturizing for me. Our hairs are different so different practices may have to be applied in caring for our hair. Generally the best thing I did for my hair is to avoid scalp oils. I treat my hair from within (with Multivitamins) and allow the natural reactions to do their work on my scalp; now, I'm achieving amazing growth. Deep conditioners of course are a must. ..... Protective styles can work. Keep exploring until you find what works for you.
Try onion juice and honey mixture it will grow back in no time. Ghana braids did this to me now I only get feed in's. I also don't allow anyone to start my braids with weave. Hope I was able to help .
Please just love your god giving hair! Let's just have a moratorium on weaves, faux locs, passion twists, etc. We need to stop and just embrace your natural beauty.
I had faux passion twists and I had an allergic reaction to the hair. My scalp was inflamed and broke off severely after having them only for 5 days. I could only cowash and finger detangle for a month before my scalp healed.
Yes for fine soft high prosody hair like my own protective styles are not protective styles when I use braids wigs or anything that put tension or stress on my entire head I completely shaved my hair off till about 1 inches and I do nothing to it ( wash n go only) i’m just gonna let it grow 🙌🏾😀💪🏾🫶🏾🙏🏾
See … I need to get back to my henna and natural treatments too. I’ve completely stopped and have been using store products. Tonight I made some rice water and mixed it with my Manuka Honey deep conditioner. I’ll be digging out the oils and doing right. My hair is the shortest it’s been in years. And it’s my fault 🤦♀️. But I just need to get back to what I know works✅💯 thanks for sharing!
I installed some heavy premade individual crotchet twists one time over my locs. Most people can’t tell but I can still see a thin part, especially around my hairline. I also have another thin section when I went to a salon to have them retightened as a post-delivery treat. Never again.
🌻For only one month I had my hair in a cute crochet style. I regret getting that style now. Those braids broke my hair off the edges and my crown area. My new comeback for my hair is amla fenugreek and my favorite coconut oil. Then after my deep condition a ACV rinse for my scalp. Invest in some wild growth hair oil. That will grow your hair and leave it thick. Happy growing our hair is our glory 🙏God bless you all ❤️.
I recently took my hair out of braids. I had it in for a month. Not sure why but a lot of my hair fell out from the root. A LOT. I have bald spots & my hair is drastically thin. I'm so devastated & traumatized. I laugh, 😂but I cry on the inside. 😭 My scalp never felt irritated, so I have no clue what caused this. I do my own hair & this has never happened before.
Honestly, that Tgin seems to damage my edges, so I stopped using it. Another thing was those closures that damage the front temple of my hair. I recovered with using growth oils. I also think the TGIN contributed to edge damage. I noticed that after I got braids. Braids have promoted hair growth. I’m learning that when your hair is been under a protective style it will cause a lot of shedding but that does not mean that it’s damaged hair
I understand what you mean NAPPYFU with practice what you preach. I’m learning this lesson now. Those setbacks will turn into major comebacks. I’m glad you posted. ❤️ In the past, I got some tight braids that I had to spend probably 6 months growing my edges back. Since then, I don’t wear braids because I’m scared the braids will do the same thing to my head. Plus, people seem to be heavy handed on my head; and I definitely don’t like that at all. If I could do braids myself, I would wear braids. Eventually, I’ll learn to do braids. Right now, I’m good without wearing them, but I miss having them.
I totally agree with "the heavy handed" hand. It seems going natural the scalp & strands have reawakening and you will see how people really treat your head. The comeback is real. I have been using 'covid time' being away from others to treat my hair. Do what you must to have your healthy crown. We must all be away of styles & know what works for you. I personally stick to a blend of medium cornrows & single braids. Accept the compliments, but quickly put it back in limited touch free healthy styles. (Twists etc..)
Yesssssss 😮💨 Cornrows and unfortunately knotless braids. My hair came out with the braids during the take down . I’m doing Ayurvedic treatments now to strength and thicken the hair. I’m also using Ayurvedic oils to grow the hair. I currently wear a SLAP daily to minimize manipulation of my hair.
I got box braids a few years ago. The hair was so heavy, and she braided my edges with that heavy braiding hair. 2 braids came out that had my edges attached. I was out of town, but I was where I am from originally. I took all of the braids out around the entire perimeter of my hair and when I got back to Houston, I took all the braids out. I learned a lesson. I don’t think it is the style, more so of the stylist. You have to speak up. Tell them what you want.
I am curious about something, but I don't know how to say it without being rude, since I do not really speak English. It's an honest question : Can you still call a hairdo a protective style even though it broke your hair? 🤔 Is it just by habit that people say that? It seems that every time people wear braids and wigs and stuff they call it protective style even when it is not. In that case can it be just called a braided style or a "put away" style, since you put your hair away for a while ? I'm not sure if what I mean is clear. Anyways, I'm curious, because I don't really understand the concept. Thanks in advance 😊
You are right it is not a protective style if it is breaking your hair. Whenever a “protective hairstyle” is done, it needs to be done in a way that it will not damage your hair, if so, then it is not a protective hairstyle. One more thing people generally tend to put protective styles in their hair and then they don’t care for their hair during the time their hair is in this “protective style” and then it turns into a “neglecting style” so that is what damages the hair too. You still have to cleanse your scalp and put whatever moisturizing treatments or oils or creams on your hair in order to keep your hair hydrated. You can’t go three and four and five and six months without putting water on your hair and expect for your hair to not break.
This has happened 2 me a few times. But rosemary, cinnamon oil and castor oil rubbed on the spot 2x a day (am/pm) for a month grew them back. And keeping them tension free of course.
Braids actually rip my hair out. I end up losing way too much hair. I have very fine strands and medium density hair. Losing a palm full of hair is ridiculous!
My fine hair can not do styles with individual braids or locs because that tension just snap my -ish right off. I can do cornrows and crochet method but individuals braids are a no-no for my edges 🙅🏾♀️
I do protective styles all the time, but the styles that leave my edges out. The edges blend in with the hair so I use no edge control products just moisture products. I shampoo my edges once a week; this seems to work for me.
Great video! I am definitely looking forward to your Ayurvedic hair videos. The first video of yours that I watched was your henna video and I’ve been hooked on henna ever since! And to answer your napchat question I don't think I've had a protective style that damaged my hair. But I have definitely neglected my hair while it was in a protective style 🙃

How long do Twist Outs last ?
Box braids are only protective if it’s your real hair
Somewhat similar boat I’ll be 45 this year did the big chop now it’s time to focus just on health health and health
The way your rolled your eyes at the clip breaking I felt that 🤣
Braids use to damage my hair also but since I have done my own braids I have noticed minimal damage.
😲 sp sorry to hear that. Glad to hear you've recovered
True
Well I think ot depends on the installation and how well hair can take it. But yh to be safe, better braid with your own hair.
I’m going through the same thing! May God restore our crowns!!!
Amen
Amen 🙏🏾
Yes!!! Micro braided bob & faux locs that were extremely too tight & heavy.
I have fine hair strands (fine hair is not thinning hair) in the middle and back of my head and it thrives in braids aka when I leave my hair alone (with a washing & moisturising routine while braided)
4c hair tends to love being left alone but hydrated and braids allow me to do that, but not 3 months long.
@@serenamitchel3585 😨 did u say 5-6 months?! Guurrlll no 😵💫🤢🤢 stop it before u catch a fungal infection or something! I know u be itching like a mug 😆
Nah but fr ACV is not a CLEANSER, but an ACIDIFIER.
I am about to remove four month old, once refreshed braids. Pray for me y'all. Great verse in the beginning.
I only have large knotless braids for up to 6 weeks now and that works brilliantly.
Agree! Just took out knotless braids and had minimal shedding and no breakage. I only had mine in for 3 weeks.
Loosing my edges w box braids for years unfortunately. Since I went natural I tried them again and had bald spots. They've finally grew back in thank God! I decided I am not messing w fake hair and I am no longer doing any tension styles. My hair has been on its best behavior 🤗❤️!
Amen to this 🙏🏾
Hello Grace. That thin spot in the front made my heart drop. I hope you have success in growing your hair back to a healthy state.
Thank you sis!
@@NappyFu also eat lots of kale and dandelion as it is full of iron and hair loves iron
Honestly learning how to master a protective style that truly protects is key, using less hair is key, loose roots, and tight up dos is key, I learnt the hard way
I like low maintenance of ponytail and half-wig …no tension on the edges 🙏🏾❤️🙏🏾❤️
Yes me too!
I use foam for everything BUT u have 2 set it with heat and hair must b clean. Hope that helps.
I was going to do some braids next week…. Now I am rethinking it. Hmmmm. Be blessed. Have a great week.
Were you planning to get Fulani braids? Thats what I have here. It's a beautiful style but I can't get it again. Knotless braids I'm a fan of.
I experienced damage from a sew-in. Could have been due to the fact that I was transitioning and hadn't cut my relaxed ends off yet. I love the braids you wore!🥰
Me too! I had a patch of hair in the back of my head come out. I had to get it all cut off but now I’m 100% natural but the sew ins are a no for me.
@@Girlintheewild same...been natural since 2010. I had Senegalese twists 5 years and I loved them.
I mean if that works for u that’s great, thicker hair works best with protective styles anyway so I can see why it might not have worked for u
My natural hair stylist calls them alternative styles instead of protective
It depends on the width of the hair not the curl type
It’s highly dependent on the grade of hair you have. My aunt has super coarse hair that is incredibly strong. She can wear braids for months and hardly get any breakage. I on the other hand can wear braids for a week and then have clumps of hair fall out when I try to take it out because I have very fine strands. So it’s a protective style to some…but not all naturals. I would also say there are differences even within 4c. Someone can have the coil pattern of 4c but have extremely dense and coarse hair. Hence, you really have to look closely at an influencer’s texture to determine if they actually have the same type of hair as you.
Great video!😍
WOW when we think we've gone through worse, sorry to hear this dear
Yes, yes!! I just took out my “protective” style and I suffered some damage to my edges too. Started using herbs and will start back to my weekly wash day as well.
Thank you for sharing with us!! We LOVE you Nappy Fu😍
I definitely screamed "old school" when you pulled out the sulfur8 🙌🏾🙌🏾
Whoever that stylists was that did your hair is Ughhhhh but you're definitely going to grow it back!!
I haven't had any damage from styles but a product almost ruined my ends took me a year to fully recover
I stop doing braids years ago, even before I went natural simply because of the shed afterwards....I hate it that much
Yes I experienced some havoc on my hair with Crochet braids TWICE!!
Gurrrrl funny coz I had a similar experience as yours with "faux locs"... twice my hair got yanked, never again!
Contoure forgives you Girl!
Lol 😂. Thanks sis.
Definitely had my edges snatched from wigs and weaves. It got really bad when I started braiding my hair too. I just stopped using extensions completely and used a derma roller tool to get my edges back. This worked miracles and have a full hairline xx
Where did you get your derma roller?
@@MT-yx5cu I get them from any online beauty store or even amazon or ebay. Skin Medix is one I use mainly. I used a size 1mm no bigger than that to avoid scalp damage.
U have beautiful hair my sister!!😍
Saaame for me! I love my braids but had to take a break to work on those edges.
It's best not to leave a protective style for no longer than 5-6 weeks and smaller braids puts alot of stress on your hairs strands.
Thank for showing all your shed hair. I see some videos and they make me feel like I am going bald with the amount of hair I lose.
🤣 right?!
Honey no more regular braids for me. Knotless braids are the new way. I hear people say they only last for about one month, but I make mines last for two, as my money got to stretch. I keep my hair as neat as possible. But Most of All, I keep my edges, matter of fact, I keep all my hair.
Braids with added hair always breaks and or weakens my hair. Love the styles, can't wear them.

Rosemary does wonders to stop shedding. The DIY combinations are a blessing, because you control the raw ingredients. Mielle Rosemary and mint serum helped a few troubleshooting areas. Correct! Seems like we all need some lil reminder every now and then 🙂
My sister has experienced great success with using weaves and braids with added hair to grow her hair, but for some reason these styles destroy my hair, even though we both have the same hair. I prefer wash n’gos and loose twists and my hair does just fine.
Maybe you don’t have the same hair as her. Look at her strand width.
Ya!... as pretty as those braiding styles look... attaching braiding hair to 4C hair or any tension pulling hair styles is a no-no :( .
Thanks!!
I have had a few setbacks and recovery was always getting back to the basics of aloe vera, a good oil like olive or castor and a good cream. All of the ayurvedic remedies are great too.
Lol I know where you’re coming from with the robe, I have one the same old but very comfortable. Hair styles looks beautiful.
Good to see you and hope you enjoyed your travels. The braids were beautiful. I've never had extensions and probably would not try them at this point because I have alopecia.
First time watching and listening. You are hilarious. Too funny. Too funny. Keep it up Sista-Lady! Keep it up and I wish you continued success.

I use to leave my extension braids in for six months 😂😬I have locs now and best decision I ever made regarding my hair🙌🏿
😩wow
Nope. Never seen anyone with long hair who wore them regularly-until RUclips. And RUclips is still the only place I see that.
This 💯
Happened to me still going through recovery mode the struggle is real sis
I had faux passion twists and I had an allergic reaction to the hair. My scalp was inflamed and broke off severely after having them only for 5 days. I could only cowash and finger detangle for a month before my scalp healed.
Oh my goodness! I’m glad you’re okay!!
@@misprinc1928 thank you, it happened before Halloween. I ended up cutting it very short and shaving the sides and back to start over healthy.
Yes for fine soft high prosody hair like my own protective styles are not protective styles when I use braids wigs or anything that put tension or stress on my entire head
I completely shaved my hair off till about 1 inches and I do nothing to it ( wash n go only)
i’m just gonna let it grow 🙌🏾😀💪🏾🫶🏾🙏🏾
Make sure you always rinse synthetic hair with ACV
This is scary I hope your hair recovers. I'm suppose to braid my hair in a few days but I'm rethinking my appointment. Lol.
Great video
In the past, I got some tight braids that I had to spend probably 6 months growing my edges back.
My girl, heyyyyy nappy fu 👋💕
Yesssssss 😮💨
Cornrows and unfortunately knotless braids. My hair came out with the braids during the take down . I’m doing Ayurvedic treatments now to strength and thicken the hair. I’m also using Ayurvedic oils to grow the hair. I currently wear a SLAP daily to minimize manipulation of my hair.
Happy Sunday.
Is it just by habit that people say that?
@@Superlife1369 Okay, I understand. Thank you 😊
Omg that’s a lot of shed hair I would cry!
This has happened 2 me a few times. But rosemary, cinnamon oil and castor oil rubbed on the spot 2x a day (am/pm) for a month grew them back. And keeping them tension free of course.
A cute scarf coulda bypassed the gel
super cute
Braids actually rip my hair out. I end up losing way too much hair. I have very fine strands and medium density hair. Losing a palm full of hair is ridiculous!
You are hilarious. Just subscribed.
My fine hair can not do styles with individual braids or locs because that tension just snap my -ish right off. I can do cornrows and crochet method but individuals braids are a no-no for my edges 🙅🏾♀️
It was the wig glue for me ...😭 Can't wait to see some new growth
😲 sorry to hear that 🙏🏾
I do protective styles all the time, but the styles that leave my edges out. The edges blend in with the hair so I use no edge control products just moisture products. I shampoo my edges once a week; this seems to work for me.
Massaging my head while watching something helped which growth
Great video! I am definitely looking forward to your Ayurvedic hair videos. The first video of yours that I watched was your henna video and I’ve been hooked on henna ever since! And to answer your napchat question I don't think I've had a protective style that damaged my hair. But I have definitely neglected my hair while it was in a protective style 🙃
Greetings... look into Alma powder, aloe vera powder or gel, fenugreek powder or seeds, rosemary leaves & cloves... there is a whole world of growth in the pantry. Teas (black, green; white & herbal).
Same here! Love Ayurveda!
I've learned that only large or extra large braids are best for me and my fine 3c/4a hair. And I do them myself so that I can control how much tension is on my hair. I learned from experience. I had to use deep conditioning, auyervedic DIYs and time to get my hair back right. Now I'm rethinking these braids I was gonna do tomorrow lmao!
I'm dying to know what colour is on your nails! That is the most beautiful shade of green and I NEED it for spring!
Post partum shedding got my edges gone 😭😭😩
I had knotless braids in for about 2 months. I lost enough hair on my head to make a wig. My edges are destroyed. Right now I put twist in my hair and where my YGN t-shirt buns to work and at night I put my silk scarf on. Wash day consist of sulfate free shampoo and leave in conditioner. I use wild growth oil and a hair cream every other day. Hope that my edges grow back soon. Almost forgot....Textured ID Hair Masque for deep conditioning.
I would strongly recommend to also pay a visit to a dermatologist or trichologist to ensure the damage is not permanent.
The hair oil once a day on the spots massage them before bed you’ll have growth in a week it’s will grow back fast long as it’s kept moist
I don't do protective styles on my hair, but crown area is a hot mess. I've been ill for almost a year, and although I've been washing my hair...I haven't been deep conditioning/doing protein treatments/detangling/seeing my stylist properly.
My poor crown is so thin and balding and I'm so sad!!!!!!! It's my most sensitive area, and I was gaining control before I got sick. I've been feeling better lately (maybe that means my new meds are working 🙏🏾), so hopefully, I can start back on my regiment.
Glad you are beginning to feel better. May God heal you completely!
@@sable7114 thank you so much❤!!! Hopefully, I can fix my crown area.
For me hair is secondary to health. Wishing you the best health possible.
@@marleyhill34 thank you for the health well wishes ❤. I hope you are doing well!!
It like that saying goes, when you don't look good, you don't feel good. I just feel so ugly with that thin bald spot at my crown. I'm just hoping to feel better so I can get that spot back right. You know?
@@apara2005 I pray that you feel better and whatever condition goes away ASAP. That's understandable honestly, especially as women, we are more concerned about our appearance.
No matter what though, remember, you're beautiful! The hair loss is temporary and it will grow back as you heal💕.
My alligator clips give out randomly too!!! I know my grip ain’t that strong?! I have about five left now. 🤦♀️ I want my money back.
🇬🇧🙋🏾♀️Pa ha ha ha ha oh my days I can't with you, byeeeeeeeeeee😂👏🏾
Girl don't watch that robe, we all low key got one of them we don't want to let go of🙈
i suggest tell your braider to put less hair around your edges, me doing that has serious made a difference over time
Hey Sis.
Just wondering if you can do a review on clove water for hair growth and reduced shedding. I tried it for 1 week and noticed more full and less breakage. By the way love your videos 😍
Many years ago I tried a sew-in. It did not only look horrible, bit was so tight my sins were snatched. I took it off after two days and my edges have never again been as full as they were. Never ever again.
Really sorry to hear this 😞
