I’m halfway through watching this set now, and I’m most impressed. If you already know Dan, you probably don’t need my review, but if you’re more of a beginner in martial arts, this might help.
My experience in self-defense is limited but I have lived as an adult in two very different countries: Australia and over a decade in South Korea. I have some experience in Chidokan karate (modernised Shotokan), with a little in aikido. Others are much more experienced to comment but, from my experience, Dan covers a lot of familiar situations from a practical angle. He might come across too strongly at times on the internet, but I think he’s often grounded with the right perspective if you try to understand where he’s coming from. Dan is talking about fighting and this can involve not-so-pretty scenarios.
As a kid, I had a guy with a knife appear and ask me and my friend to come to him. My friend ran off. I froze. Luckily, my father was not far behind me and the guy disappeared. Another time, I beat a young guy trying to fight me 3~4 times using the same judo trip and hold. I guess he picked on me because I appeared weaker than my two friends (true). I think I knew about two other techniques, and he knew none that I saw.
My point here is that our reaction in a real situation can be unexpected and that technique can help. After doing karate, I still wasn’t sure what to do with all the situations that Dan describes. I have successfully not allowed anything else to escalate too much over my lifetime, but karate mainly taught me how to square off for a potential fight, when a situation could suddenly be in your face. Dan addresses this kind of real situation precisely. Sure, we may learn to shout in martial arts but Dan teaches how to avoid, how to use phrases to indicate you don’t want trouble, hand movements to distract, and so on. I can see blends of traditional techniques and perhaps modern interpretation, with other realism, such as avoiding ground with simultaneous restraint and being aware of other attackers and weapons. The result, to me, looks effective. I understand Dan may mix systema principles here to good effect.
There are plenty of reviews and well-trained people who attest to Dan’s experience in the ring, not to mention when we consider his experience in other areas like the security industry. Dan’s experience here has rung true for them, as it does for a relative beginner like me.

@@brutusleao Hey, Jusuf! Yeah, Koreans have some amazing stuff. I saw an international taekwondo competition here in 2008 which was great to watch.
I'd like to do some martial training here one day. It doesn't seem like the right time for me now, but here's hoping!
I'll likely try to visit some clubs and vlog some of this also on RUclips :)

@@themilesinkorea Thats good idea.. Its never too late start with martial arts training. I can recommend to you hapkido or musado, which was very popular in 80-90's in many military training camps arround the world
