    Well sir, for me, it all comes down to priorities. What you see in the videos are things that I feel are important. I could give you plenty of examples of things that I don't have, but most of society says they are important. My priorities are food, shelter, clothing. If it doesn't help me with either of those 3 things...I generally don't waste my money on it. Hope that helps.

    Nice job, Bobby. If anyone wants to do a double barrel burner, you showed them how to do it.

    Well, Mother Earth Mag had a configuration in the early 70's, it was in one of their first couple of years. It didn't look anything like your configuration. I used the ME version and it worked great. The 2 barrels need to be staggered, the pipe coming from the lower needs to come into the top of the second and the exhaust pipe is vented from the lower part of the top barrel. That way, the top barrel is radiates the heat before smoke is vented. It worked for us in the 70's!

    @peacemaker350 Yea...its a rain cap from Lowes. I don't really like it, but I have to put something up there. I can't leave it open like a wood boiler outside. The rain would just pour into the barrels. I've seen the barrels turn cherry red, they get very hot. My problem is the fact that I need to regulate the temps with a thermostat. I can't just open the draft and walk away, or close it down for the night. I hope to have an outside wood boiler for next winter

    So, in summary, you replaced that turbocharger with a supercharger, bored out the motor and upped the cam, and added high efficiency exhaust? Very nice! If only Verizon could do that with your internet connection!

    @bowhunter2439 I couldn't do an inline for sure..the creoste, even a small amount, would mess that up. I've seen fans that mount to the outside of the pipe, just above the stove, to help with draft. But when they are blowing, they are forcing are up the pipe that has to come from somewhere...meaning its likely being pulled thru cracks in the building. Thats what I'm trying to prevent, and the initial reason for the lower blower intake.

  • @mhpgardener
    @mhpgardener  12 лет назад

    @galegregory97comcast I have the bottom half of the barrel lined with firebrick. I check the pipes ever so often, depending on how much wood has been burned. I think that double pipe will resolve the creosote issue.

  • @mhpgardener
    @mhpgardener  12 лет назад

    @MrVTHILLBILLY Thx bro. I do have the brick in there, but not the sand. For the cost, if they last 3-4 years, its a good deal. I like the forced air furnace that you bought. If I have no more cresote problems, I may cut holes in the top barrel and put pipes in there. I just don't want to do it if I still need to get in there and clean the barrel.

  • @mhpgardener

    @Planting81 I'm trying. That broccoli and cabbage at the start are just going crazy.

  • @mhpgardener
    @mhpgardener  12 лет назад

    @greekcabanaboy Its true that the barrels would help retain heat. But that process is general for a passive solar GH. It would take a LOT of barrels of water to make a difference here. That type of GH is much more expensive to build...but is certainly something to think about.

  • @mhpgardener
    @mhpgardener  12 лет назад

    In that situation, I think it would be working like an open fireplace in that I'd be pulling cold air into the GH and forcing warm air out somewhere, much like heat going up a chimney. I'm gonna try pipes inside the upper barrel and see how that works.

    • @frankdeegan8974
      @frankdeegan8974 5 лет назад

      Now you are talking heat exchange pipes in the top barrel will solve most all your problems, no outside air needed in the quantities you are pumping inside now, only one fan to push air through the exchange pipes firebrick the bottom of the fire box, cooler fire with the setup you have now both barrels should be red hot with heat exchange pipes you may not need a thermostat bank the firebox set the damper and enjoy the heat .

  • @TheDelta604

    they are 4 X 4 X 4 and if you dig down 2 ft you will warm the dirt floor once placed in the whole if you pre plan and coil 1/2" copper tube around your barrels after an inch of cob before you finish the mass you will have a water heater for the fish that will also heat the greenhouse.

    My only option is wireless. Satellite is a no-no. And I don't have a land line for dial up, not that I'd want it anyways. I can look out my window and see the tower, straight shot. The problem is I'm out in the country, and the tower can't support the growing traffic. VZ needs to do some upgrading, and fast.

    suggestion: 55 gallon barrels(painted black) in the center isle-way, with rain water catchment and the black color, there will be enough thermal mass heat in the winter (just with water) you wont need a heater(possibly) just think about it. :)

  • @NaughtyGoatFarm
    @NaughtyGoatFarm 12 лет назад +1

    How about using the excess air from the blower to blow across the outside of the heater to blow hot air into the space you are trying to heat.

  • @mhpgardener
    @mhpgardener  12 лет назад

    Ideally, an outside boiler would be best. But I can think of about 7500 reasons why I haven't done that...its not cheap. I used to keep a pot of water on the barrel, but its really a drop in the bucket compared to the size of the greenhouse. Maybe I'll run across a cheap wood boiler. That would be nice.

  • @mhpgardener
    @mhpgardener  11 лет назад

    I wish I could find something else, but VZ is my best option right now. I talked to a guy from the local retail store and he said he thought we'd be getting 4G in a few months. I'm willing to pay more, but I want to get what I pay for.

    @dt65262 I agree. They don't mind taking the money, but they no longer feel like they're making a profit from me. Its only 3G anyways. When they upgrade to 4G, then I need a new modem. THEN they will have a reason to charge more, but not right now. I think the stoves will be ok. I'll check them in a week or so to be sure, and plan on making the first stove pipe double wall as well.

    I feel your pain as we are lucky what service we do have without needing to use Verizon. We get 70 GB per month, download speed of 7 Mbps and upload of 1 Mbps for $80/mo.
    Our carrier provides service by wireless tower and we have a pretty good line of sight to the tower. I'm sure you've investigated wireless service that might be in your area. The only problem with the service is their repair response times. I'm just glad we have them otherwise, it would be dial-up for us.

    @mhpgardener You could say that. I'm in Australia. Most of our "net" comes through hi-speed optical fibre. Even if you live in the middle of nowhere here there is the option of receiving it via satellite. The federal government pays for your dish, decoder etc, all you do is pay for your actual plan. The people that supply us with food etc are not then left behind too much hopefully. It's a great system.

    Thanks for the concern Alex. I keep a close eye on the stove pipes. Once it gets really cold, I'll clean them every 2 weeks. I just take the top door off and run a wire brush up thru the stack, quick and easy. Someone suggested pouring perlite into the spacing between the 6 inch and 8 inch pipes. I haven't done it yet, cuz I didn't want to mess up the top seal. But it's still a possibility.

    @TheClownCentral Geezzz...such rudeness....LOL j/k 2 reasons.. 1, I couldnt figure a way to safely vent the pipe thru plastic, without worrying about embers burning holes in it. 2, Not only would I use up space for the stove, but I'd have to pile wood in there too, which would further decrease my growing space. Good question though. :-)

  • @mhpgardener

    @selfreliantboy VZ is pretty much my only option. Its only 3G too. And it looks like everyone is doing the throttling deal right now. Just a matter of time before they shut me down again, then I'll have to decide what to do. Oregon huh? The GPS must have sent you off on the wrong road ! LOL

    Learning a lot from your videos. I like the way that you troubleshoot and improvise your solutions.
    Regarding Verizon: I am a computer technician with a strong background in telecommunications and troubleshooting of broadband problems (I don't work directly for any of the ISP's though, only for actual business end users).
    What all mobile (cellular) internet users need to understand is that there is a maximum bandwidth available at each cell tower that is in range of your cellular modem, hotspot or smartphone. All users connected to each tower are competing for a slice of the maximum tower bandwidth, just like farmers competing for the water flowing through a large irrigation pipe.
    When too many users are downloading at the same time, the tower becomes "over subscribed" and the QoS system (Quality of Service) in the tower has to start throttling down packet flows to the users in order to balance bandwidth demand with bandwidth supply. (The flow rate & volume of water in each farmer's pipe begins to slow in order to not kick off anyone from the supply. They still get water, just not as much and not as fast.) So, if you are the ISP & tower operator, what do you do when users start complaining about your QoS throttling?
    You can't possibly increase maximum tower bandwidth without increasing your tower's backhaul capacity back to the nearest internet backbone (either more copper cable, more fiber optic cable or more microwave backhaul capacity plus more powerful routers & switches). You don't have enough revenue from a small, dispersed, rural area customer base to finance capacity expansion anytime soon, but, in the meantime, your customers are complaining vociferously. What can you do to make the most customers reasonably satisfied without losing too many to competitors?
    Well, you have a very small number of unlimited access customers who pay the least for the most bandwidth, and a large number of users who pay the most for contractually guaranteed & limited chunks of bandwidth. Obviously, the unlimited access customers are getting a sweetheart deal from the early days of network build out and that's where you might want to throttle the most in order to keep the majority happy. Sure, it sucks for the unlimited access customers who where some of the earliest & most loyal subscribers, but as the ISP you have to throttle back somewhere to keep the network usable for the greatest number of users.
    So, the bottom line is this: there is not infinite bandwidth on sections of the cellular mobile internet, but there is exploding demand on network bandwidth by every single user on every single network segment. Something has to give to keep the network functioning...

    @manholewisdom Thx. Actually, that was my first thought, after watching so many rocket stove vid's. But I wasn't sure about keeping it from falling out the bottom, or exactly what to mix it with. So I just kept it simple. Yea...I need the height to get it up above the roof line of the GH. Compared to being outside last night..it was very cozy in there. A couple more nights of 20 degrees and 30 MPH winds and I'll put me a cot in there !

    Thanks Jewel. If you're gonna try to maintain the growth of your plants, I'd try to keep it near 60 overnight if possible. A few degrees cooler may not hurt, but I think 60 would be better. Since I'm not looking to make any new fruit, I'm ok right now with 50-55. But in Feb, when I have a new crop going, I'll be trying to hold that 60 degree level.

    @toddlfrank Oh yea, that was some good stuff. My biggest problem is the fact that I don't weld too good on thin metal. So I'm hesitant to cut holes in the barrel for pipes. Also, I'd have to find a way to get the secondary intakes to function independently..since they don't need to be working until the stove temps get high enough...if I understand it correctly.

    Would have thought the after burner barrel would burn hot enough to prevent creosote buildup. As I’m sure you know, creosote is evil… and has been the cause of many burned down houses up this way. Would think the main concern with your setup is a chimney fire shoots off a lot of hot sparks which would be concerning with all the plastic. Sorry about your Verizon issue… but the Lord is in control of EVERYTHING, even Verizon!!! Thanks for sharing and take care.

I used insulation in my double wall pipe above the roof line. It wood be easier, 6 inch wrapped insulation around it, then wrapped 8 inch, and worked my way up. keeps the heat in better then dead space. I am kinda afraid for you, since your pipe is double walled the creosote is on the inside, and can't see it

    @marthale7 Out here, the only wired line would be about 28K dialup.....I've had enough of that recently ! Regarding the grate, its a good idea if the air flow is not good. But with this blower, it became a liability...go figure. All in the name of progress I guess. Thanks.

    @dustyanderson1 It burns plenty hot. Its just during the cool down cycle that the temps in the stack were dropping so much. I think I have that fixed now, but I'll keep a check on it just to make sure theres no more buildup. I sure don't want to see any melted plastic. ;-)

    Thank you sir. I have considered a wood boiler, but I found several thousand reasons to stick with the barrels, LOL
