  • Scenes from the 2022 Hosay in St James Trinidad on Big Hosay night. This Shia Muslim (also called Shiite Muslim) observance is mainly seen in St James and Cedros in Trinidad and commemorates the martyrdom of Hussein, the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, and the later murder of his brother Hassan. Big Hosay Night in St James Trinidad is when the large Tadjah's are brought out onto the streets and is the third night of the commemoration. The first night is Flag Night and the second night is called Small Hosay as small replicas of the larger tadjahs are paraded on the streets. The six days preceding these public displays are days of prayer and fasting. These festivities are also known as the celebration of Muharram and mark the period of Ashoura.

Omg! This has bought back so many wonderful childhood memories of going to St James to see the Hosay. Back in years gone by, they used to be outstanding, huge majestic tadjs, they have gotten much smaller over the years, I guess due to cost. Thanks for the video, one does not even know when it takes places nowadays.

They have been made smaller because of the overhead electricity lines. If they are too tall they will get tangled with the electricity lines.

Thank you for showing the Hosay. I always wanted to go to see the tadjahs but would never know when it was occurring. I really enjoyed the drumming and the beauty of the tadjahs. I didn't even know that there were 3 nights and the rituals associated with them or the story of the festival. This was very informative and well-produced. Thank you for a job well done.

As a child back in the day I loved seeing them dance the big moons. I remember hearing them say the moons used to kiss.

It is my understanding that they still kiss although this year the moons came after I had left so I did not see them.

Unfortunately I did not see the Tadjah from Cocorite. Apparently when you arrived I did not know that there was another Tadjah at that end of the Main Road and so did not go back to that end.
