    I had a girl bullying me to tears every week in a daycare setting and management would do nothing about it. She “corrected” me over lesson plans. I would go to the boss and ask if I’m doing things wrong and explain my reasonings on what I did, and the boss would be like “she said what? No. Your lesson plans are perfectly fine.” And then I’d keep doing as I was told was fine, and worse & worse things from my co teacher would happen. I still stuck it out until I got another job. That job was mental TORTURE

      Your statement resonates with me so much. I worked at a restaurant about 25 years ago. The owner purchased the business from another franchisee and my team was assembled to come in, hire, and retrain the staff for their newly remodeled location. 50% of the crew was new. We had a LOT of bad seeds, people who were miserable because their job or role was changed.
      First the veteran (leaders as we were told to refer to them as) team members would brow-beat the new employees, telling them to not do things the way our training staff and trained them. They would insist the new team members pick up more work and do extra side jobs, clearly to help complete work the veterans didn't want to do. I had new employees say, "wow they have me doing extra work outside of what you told me, is this normal?" I'd then have to go and address it with these "leaders". In my book, a leader is someone who can do the work, and guide other's through the process. That doesn't mean they are a "boss", or give them the right to pawn off their work on other people. We had around 7 of these type of employees.
      It was a great job while it lasted. I was quickly promoted to General Manager. We had sales-breaking weeks year-over-year for the next 3 years. The owner made tons of profit. But yet, I never got a raise and was expected to continue working 6 days a week. I proactively found a job with a higher pay and decided to leave, but the owner came in and relieved me 3 days later. It was and a great 4 years while it lasted. Onward and upward.

    I've worked for about 10 bosses at this point in my career, including people from 5 different countries. I can flex with different styles. However, I had ONE boss who seemed super nice in the interview, but on day two of work I got a sinking feeling when I heard how she talked to people, and within the first week it was evident the person was emotionally abusive. After a few weeks, I called two of my prior bosses who knew me well and were mentors to me to ask their advice on how to respond in this setting, and they told me some strategies for handling it but also suggested I give myself permission leave. They said leaving in a short timeframe once is forgivable without it being a major hit to my resume - so I started applying for other roles right away and left after I landed a new offer. It was such a relief, and thankfully, I ended up back in sane work territory again! Yes, people need to be willing to flex with different styles, rise to the occasion, and even toughen up to a degree, but it's ok to have limits with what you're willing to tolerate. I am so glad that some folks older and wiser than me reminded me that I had autonomy!

It's a low cost of living area, but the closest town is an hour away and there aren't homes here and there aren't other jobs. If my husband took the exact same job in a larger town, closest one is 3 hours away, we wouldn't be able to afford to live anywhere near the town.

    In 2016 I was in a toxic work environment, a real toxic work environment, and for 3 years I was afraid that I would get laid-off, and I could not quit because I already uprooted my family to move to our location (at the urging of my wife BTW). Quitting was not an option because I was the sole provider at the time, and it got so bad that one time by accident I caught my tech lead making fun of my accent to another colleague of mine. To this day they don't know that I overheard that conversation which happened in the beginning of 2018. Not only did I not get fired, I got awards, accommodations, an OK raise, and a hefty bonus in the beginning of 2019. • @MercuryRyzen
      @MercuryRyzen 6 месяцев назад

      @leechburglights Ignore the fact he enjoys the work, which typically means a person puts forth effort. We both agree the letter doesn't contain much info. Unfortunately Dave went straight to the person reaching out is the problem. Not a balanced discussion that it could be him, the boss, or a personality conflict that has little to nothing to do with his work quality or effort.
      Again, Dave played jump to conclusions... Might have something to do with Dave being a boss with 1100 employees, perhaps causing a defensive reaction. Boss can't be the problem, must be the employee.
      All that said, Dave could be right. More likely, he just heaped a pile of crap on the guy who is/was a loyal listener and may very well have his priorities in order. He's concerned about his ability to provide for his family. He came to Dave for advice and was told he's the problem. More context could have helped, but the questioner probably didn't think he needed to roll out a laundry list of why the boss is 'bad', he was asking how he should proceed in protecting his job and family, steps to take.

They think just telling someone “go do it” is being a leader. A leader inspires those that work for them to work harder because they RESPECT them. That’s why people are “quiet quitting” they have awful bosses who are there either due to checking boxes or nepotism.

Also, carrying any debt immediately removes any and all leverage you have. You should always have things at the ready at all times: 1) an updated resume, 2) no debt, 3) 12-months minimum liquid cash, 4) an active network on LinkedIn, and 5) Recruiters and former colleagues should be put on notice that you are looking for better opportunities. Yep, people expect high paying dream jobs to be stress free and when they find out it's the opposite its all of a sudden a toxic environment.

    I love how employees have to work as hard or harder than the owner of the company as they get paid less than they are worth. Employees must be paid less than they are worth for a business to run.

    No Dave, he's not being a wuss. Workplace bullying ends up giving people cancer or burnout or both. As cancer is an auto-immune disease and prolonged stress damages the immune system, an arsehole boss is literally bad for your health.
