- From Akira Kurosawa's critically acclaimed film "RAN" (or "Chaos") is the battle scene between Jiro and Saburo. Jiro is Red, and Saburo is Blue.
Hidetora Ichimonji, a powerful though now elderly warlord, decides to divide his kingdom among his three sons: Taro, Jiro, and Saburo. Taro, the eldest, will receive the prestigious First Castle and become leader of the Ichimonji clan, while Jiro and Saburo will be given the Second and Third Castles. Hidetora is to retain the title of Great Lord and Jiro and Saburo are to support Taro.
Hidetora begins to lecture his sons about the importance of unity using three arrows. He selects one arrow out of a quiver and shows how easy it is to snap in half but three arrows bundled together are much more durable. Saburo, however, breaks all three arrows with his knee and calls the lecture foolish. He points out that Hidetora is foolish if he expects his sons to be loyal to him, reminding him that even Hidetora had previously used the most ruthless methods to attain power. Hidetora hears the comments as being subversive, and when his servant Tango comes to Saburo's defense, he exiles both men. Fujimaki, a visiting warlord who had witnessed these events agrees with Saburo's frankness, and invites him to take his daughter's hand in marriage.
Hidetora is exiled after Jiro and Taro expel him from the great castle. In the conflict, one of Jiro's assassins kills Taro leaving him as Great Lord of Ichimonji clan. Hidetora is left to wander and goes mad.
Saburo crosses intpo Jiro's land to look for Hidetora. Jiro and Saburo's forces agree to a truce. When Hidetora's jester arrives to inform Saburo that this father is wandering on the volcanic plain, Saburo leaves. Two rival warlords allied with Saburo take positions on opposite ridges. With Saburo gone, Jiro orders an attack and he sends some assassins to kill Saburo.
Sensing Jiro's treachery, Saburo's gunners have taken position in the woods. Jiro's forces are caught in the open and sustain casualties. The retreat and are halfheartedly pursued by a small cavalry unit. Jiro then orders a counterattack and again comes under fire from Saburo's forces in the woods. A messenger arrives and informs Jiro that his castle is under attack from one of the rival warlords. Having realized that the forces on the ridge are a decoy, Jiro hastily retreats to defend his castle, coming once again under fire from Saburo's gunners. Saburo's forces pursue and then halt.

My dad pulled me out if school in 5th or 6th grade to go see this in a “Foreign Films” theater in Atlanta in 1985 or 86. I remember how bloody it was and the amazing fight scenes. Awesome movie!!

All before CGI. The amount of coordination to move this many extras and actors effectively is amazing.
That is what in part makes RAN a classic, movies like this and the likes of Waterloo, Spartacus, and The 300 Spartans, etc will be watched for generations and will stand the test of time. Many modern CGI ridden movies with no soul will be forgotten in just a few years.
Director must have felt like an actual Shogun directing his soldiers.
Respect to those actors who seemingly threw themselves off a horse for real for those shots. That must have hurt like hell.

@pss2996 that’s actually so cool, it makes sense that if the scene framing doesn’t need them to actually be seen falling from the horses they wouldn’t do it, but honestly that’s a really clever way of making that scene specifically, thanks for sharing it! (I obviously can’t understand any of the title or description or dialogue and all that but I get the gist lol)

I remember in the movie during the final battle, one of the actors got straight up kicked by one of the horses during the chaos!
The choreography, costume design, and the overall visuals of this movie is stunning.

the firearms were copies of early Portugues matchlocks rescued from shipwrecks.. Europe produced more advanced guns but the Japanese stayed in the 16th century. Not till the 1850's did they open to western visitors.. Then rapidly caught up.
@@minnowpd Aside from domestic copies, the Dutch were happy to sell them lots of firearms from their small trading concessions like Dejima in Kyushu after the Portuguese were expelled for their proselytising.

I mean Rotating fire by lines is already mastered by the Japanese, for example at the famous battle of Nagashino. Granted some ashigaru aren't firing by line/randomly so it's creating a sense of rapid fire loo
The Japanese did exactly that in the real battle of Nagashino. Lines of arquebuses, taking fire in turns, one fire, another reloads. It was considered the first "modern" Japanese battle.
The other army which was famous for its deadly cavalry, was decimated.
When you have thousands of trained Arquebusiers, then its slow loading becomes irrelevant, even a few hundreds becomes very deadly to a massed pack of men and animals.
Saburo is supposed to be Oda Nobunaga?

I think Kurosawa films should be mandatory study material for any up and coming director.
I was obsessed with this movie as a kid, I don't think I blinked the whole time when I first watched it. Then I was obsessed with Shogun Total War xD Ran is on my top 3 favourites, I lost count how many times I've seen it.
Same for me. I watched Ran and KAgemusha a lot, then I got totally obsessed with Shogun Total War. I never could get into any other Total War like this.
You should read the book "Shogun" by James Clavell, and then watch the mini series of the same name.
Kurosawa is such a master that he can direct a film blind.

And did he's father take he's warning? sadly no. & he payed with he's life. I call that Honor before a fall.
The whole movie is a "what could possibly go wrong" situtation and it did.
This movie is forever burned into my memory. I was young and home sick from school. I don't think I would have watched it if not for the fact that I was stuck at home and we only had five TV stations. It took only a short time for me to be sucked into the story, the imagery, and the action. At some point I didn't even realize I was reading subtitles.
It was not until years later that I realized Ran was based on Shakespeare's "King Lear." In my opinion it was and is better than most other theater and movie version of the play.

4:13 It was Takeshi Kato, a famous Japanese vibe layer, who played the samurai general, Koyata Hatakeyama.
He was comical and had many roles that were a little out of the ordinary, but he who played Hatakeyama never smiled and was devoted to the role, which is the coolest in the history of Takeshi Kato.
He was such a badass looking General! Saburon even knew his army was in good hands when he left him in charge to look for his father.
Every inch a samurai general.
I love how this battle is quite grim and devoid of any gloriousness without the use of desperate violence to portray how war is brutal.
All you see here is many men dying quickly and accomplishing nothing due to their foolish leader's actions.

ran as a film is quite bleak in general but the scenes of war are reminiscent of the void in lord ichimonji, it's simply: chaos
I remember Kurosawa mentioned about the anti war theme of this movie with "We humans have only invented many ways to kill each other"
Right, look at the video games for kids (and adults with kids' mind) - it's shoot, shoot, kill, kill, destroy, destroy... the ones with better firepower wins.

It's a sad reality. However, it is because of the technology we have developed in killing, some parts of it were also used in the pursuit of life.

German here. The movie was promoted in tv then. I lived in a rather small town, quite away from larger places. So you would not expect to have a lot of people wanting to get in touch with that kind of cineastic experience, unfortunately. The local nonprofit cultural society made it available.
As my brother and I showed up at the small cinema, we were confronted with the fact that the movie would be screened from six paying people paying. But we were only four, totally. So we decided to put in the money for the missing two attendees to get the screening roling. It wasn't a lot of money... Funny thing: some time after the movie had started, more visitors showed up and one of the cinema staff came around to redistribute the extra entry fee.
I went with a friend and we really enjoyed it! It is not a movie, it is an animated painting.
How is the movie 30 years old and high quality resolution and it felt like the movie is made in 3 or 4 years ago holy moly 😵

I took up horseriding some 4 months ago. All i can think is how the flying fuck did they cordinate these cavalry actions?? Looks easy to you?? Just ride a horse in full gallop while wearing a costume. Chances are you'll get hurt or die. Now imagine doing that with SO MANY OTHER RIDERS and a spear in your hand. Stunt doubles are not workers, they are WARRIORS.

Kurosawa was able to manage cavalry better than most historical generals. What an achievement.

I had no idea they made a movie of Shogun: ToTal War. And they somehow went back in time to film it. Amazing.
My Illustration teacher at NIU got most of his class (including me) to drive to Chicago, about an hour and a half drive, to see this when it came out.
For me, there are 2 great scenes :
1) during the battle at the old man's castle, the soundtrack swells and you don't hear the carnage going on.....until the one general kills the brother, and then all you hear is said carnage.
2)When the oldest brother and his Generals confront his wife, she tells them she planned all this, to get back at the family. Enraged, the lead General cuts her head off, and then he says the best line in the movie: "Now, we go to die for you."
I thought Ran was simply beautiful

This was my awesome introduction to Samurai movies.
Among the classic Japanese samurai movies, this movie was the most fun. The suction power is no joke, and it's so much fun that you can't miss a moment.
Whoa 😯 😲. Samurai who fight with fireguns and spear!!! It’s clear it is not a occidental director who made this movie. If not we would have had frontal charge with only katana.
Clearly japanese people know their history and know how to represent that property in movies !!!

When filming 1958 "The Hidden Fortress" (战国英豪 隠し砦の三悪人), he waited a full 100 days for a satisfactory shot of the sky.
When filming 1963 "High and Low" (天国与地狱 天国と地獄 ), he found that the second floor of a private house blocked him from shooting the scene where the actors threw cash from the Shinkansen, so he forced the second floor of the residential house to be demolished.
On the shooting scene, he is absolutely "powerful, and I am the only one". Because of this meticulous spirit, persistent and domineering attitude, he is called the "emperor" on the set by his collaborators in front of and behind the scenes.
Awesome epic film. Someone sure needed to invent megaphones back then.

The score is superb. On the big screen the scale is truly epic. A masterpiece decided in the bedroom..
Rotation shooting appeared in Japan and Europe at about the same time.
After the first row shoots, the second row shoots, and finally the third row shoots, then it goes back to the first row again.
This method allows continuous firing of the matchlock gun.
Nope, the Japanese got it like 80 years before Europe, the Japanese also figured out you can put the bullet and powder into a single cartidage like 200 years before Europe. As for rotation shooting, Han crossbowmen in ancient China's been doing that 2000 years ago. It probably occured even earlier with other weapons, remeber, unlike in video games, all projectile weapons pretty much shot straight. They don't have a recon drone telling them where to arch their shots, also arching shots don't really do much damage.

One of best movies
Interestingly it seems Kurosawa was heavily influenced by the technique Tony Richardson used for the cavalry charge in his movie Charge of the Light Brigade, which came out in 1968. By that I mean the focus on riders hiting the ground with the blur of horses racing past. Watch it to know what I mean.
well, he did that already in seven samurai 1954
Charge of the light brigade is the reason films say “No animals were harmed in the making of this film” because of how many horses died in the charges.

First time watching this film I was on shrooms. Just made the colours and the passionate movement and speech of the film that much more sensational.

@@khanhngo5979 Yeah I happened to see this one roughly around the time i first saw Ran. It was the late 90's and it came on one of the movie channels. I did not know the plot back then. But i did know that i liked it. I would recommend both films to anyone who considers them self a samurai movie fan. Along with the original Seven Samurai that one is a classic. :D

I'd recommend "Throne of Blood" and "Kagemusha" both done by Kurosawa also. My first samurai flick was "Shogun Assassin" (Lone Wolf & Cub).

Yes. Throne of Blood is in black/white and deals with a premonition from a spirit. Kagemusha is about Takeda Shingen. You might be able to find Shogun Assassin movie here on YT. The series, well that's another story.

No, their Father fatally undermined the clan by dividing his fiefdom. This left the weak eldest as prey for the ambitious middle son, Kaede the catalyst speeding up the corrosion.

The handful of samurai films I've seen, with the protagonists almost always meeting their end by a gun, makes me think of how firearms have killed--literally and figuratively--the feudal age and the samurai class.
No they didn't lol, the samurai used firearms and their feudal age persisted for centuries after the widespread adoption of guns.

Dear please help me find the movie that is somehow similar to this movie. I don’t remember the name, but there were less conversations, and somehow the “ASMR” of how the japanese troops preparing for battle. Similar landscape and there were red and blue troops.
