Very good advice. I do two other things. As soon as I check into the cabin, I use an antibacterial wipe to clean the tv remote control and the telephone(s). These devices have been tested to host more virus and bacteria than other surfaces. The other rule is that as soon as anyone enters the cabin, they wash their hands with soap and water before getting past the entrance hall. This helps to create a bit of a barrier within your cabin and the many public surfaces. Hope these tips help.
+Richard C excellent points! Hadn't thought of the remote control etc cleaning as that makes so much sense as they will also be touched a lot and probably never really cleaned like that. Thanks so much for adding these tips
The pre cruise health check that we need to fill out is usually with a shared biro provided by them !!. I recommend that we use our own pen.
Great point! I always use my own pen but just as too organised and have one to hand... but your point is huge!!
Thank you! This is so helpful. Even after being posted 6 years ago it is spot on and made me feel more comfortable about going on a cruise.
Great advice! I've researched this quite a bit and washing with soap and water is the key. Washy, washy doesn't do much for this virus though it might help with some other things you could catch. I've only been on 15 cruises with on break out of about 8% of the cruisers. I was totally shocked to see people come out of public restrooms and not bother to wash their hands. Nobody needs this as much will change on such a ship. They were walking up and down the hallways fumigating, can't be good for anyone. No more salt shakers. No more getting your own drinks in the buffet etc... The crew already has a difficult job, this just doubles their efforts. I also do as Richard C suggests.
Great video as always. One thing I am always mindful of is not touching my mouth or rubbing my eyes if I can help it.
Thanks! That is very good advice and tips. Really important to try and avoid touching mouth as you say. Much appreciate you adding this suggestion and tip for others
Thank you so much for these tips. =) Hubby and I are going on our first transatlantic cruise this year. We are trying to learn everything we need to know, about everything. It's our 10th anniversary and we would prefer to not get ill if possible. Never realized there is so much to learn and prepare for.
Are there also any tips for not getting ill while traveling via Airplane to the ports? We have never gone on a vacation. (hubby was in the military, got hurt, and we were never in a position to travel together). We are also trying to figure out what to wear, as we hear layering is the thing to do.
Thank you again, and we are starting to get excited for the Cruise!!
Great to hear you found this helpful. I am working on a video about transatlantic crossings that will be live in two weeks so hopefully that will help too! If you are worried about getting ill en route the key is using hand sanitiser and washing hands often and if motion sickness taking the pills before the flight would be my tips
You need to sing Happy Birthday TWICE while washing your hands to be cleansing them for the proper time. Do not touch your face. While the most common transmission vector is by touch, you can also get it by aerosolized viral particles (created when an infected person coughs or sneezes).
Have you ever been on a cruise ship that has had a norovirus outbreak? What was your experience and what are your tips based in it?
Luckily, I haven't...
I picked up norovirus once. I think I got it from touching the salt & pepper shakers. I had done everything you suggested in your video and more and yet I still got it.
42TRGSako awfull it is
I caught it on my first cruise before I knew that novovirus existed. The person in the next cabin had it and I suspect it was carried into our cabin by less than diligent cabin crew member since I am a germophobic nerd.
My Husband got it on our last but one cruise. His immune system isn't the best at normal times. Think he caught from a chap we met who got married onboard. He shook hands with the man to congratulate him, only to find the next day his new wife telling us he had been ill since before boarding. Grrr. As soon as my Husband got sick we reported it and was quarantined for 3 days . The doctor rang every day and insisted on speaking to him each time. I suppose to ensure we were sticking to the quarantine. Also the staff came in and washed all the walls, surfaces etc.
taking my kids for their first cruise and the number one rule will be GO BACK TO THE CABIN TO USE THE BATHROOM.
Excellent advice!!!! I do the same if I possibly can and if not use paper towel to open the door after washing hands
“…Avoiding shaking hands…” - everybody must be somewhat Japanese on such a cruise… Domo arigatou gozaimasu, Gary!
and Airliners!!!
…And… and rubbing noses as the form - format of greeting: would it be health wise OK???
+Petr Frizen possibly! Though most I seen Ship suggest was bumping elbows
“…Avoiding buffet restaurants on the cruise ship…” Dear Gary: how more cruel (travel / hospitality expectations wise) it can be?.. Almost merciless… Even distantly thinking of such a prospect gave me mental shudders and crips… Possibly… probably… getting physically expired with the norovirus would be even better: at least, somewhat romantic, if on a glamorous cruise ship. Something akin to dying (getting murdered) on the Oriental express at the times of the blissfully halcyon yore…
I wud rather die
In a nut shell wash your damn hands and be considerate of others
