I had the pleasure of seeing Janis Ian some years ago in a small venue... you couldn't be more than 25 feet from the stage. It was just her and her guitar, standing next of a flower in a vase on a stool. The audience was transfixed by the music and the deeply moving lyrics... wow! Thanks for this reaction!
I had this album in high school. She sang for me and the way I was then. You're so right that what she sings is true! Be sure to check out her earlier song, "Society's Child."
Janice Ian's ominous forecast for what happens to the 17- year-old high school beauty queen. Her beauty is like an debenture (unsecured loan) and one day she will have to pay up the loan (reality). She will find herself with feckless, ageing ladies like herself. Beauty is so fleeting.
I was 17 when this song came out. Normally, I didn't pay much attention to the Lyrics of a song, but this was one songs lyrics I payed close attention to.
Janis Ian wrote, in her mid-teens, a song about interracial dating. Song is Society's Child. I was watching a video by famed orchestral conductor, Leonard Bernstein (back in mid 60s). He was talking about rock and roll and how we (the older gen of the 60) should take this music seriously. As an example, he had Janis Ian on his TV special to sing Society's Child as an example of how 'current' music had important things to say.
I was blessed to hear Janis Ian, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon during my childhood in the '70's. My countrified hippie parents may have had some strange ideas, but they had great music. I feel sorry for today's kids who think that today's crop of "talent" are artists. You're very fortunate to have come across this song as well, and I can tell from your reaction that you realized the talent that Janis has. Keep doing what you do!
Truth-teller, artist, courageous creator, genius in her own right. Janice Ian. The greatest shame in all of popular culture is the specter of generations being unaware of her talent. I tip my hat in her direction-salute.
At 13/14 she wrote a song about interracial dating. She sang it at 15 on TV on the Smothers Brothers Show. She paid dearly for that song. That a young Jewish girl would write and perform such a song enraged a lot of people. The song is called "Society's Child" from 1967. Believe me... you want to hear it... what it was like when interracial couples were illegal.
U continue to shine as one of the best reactors and personalities on RUclips thank you for the hours of entertainment and sharing your journey with us love this song bu Janis Ian u feel it in your soul love the channel u rock
Have you done Janice Ian’s Society’s Child? I don’t remember, but if you haven’t you should try that one also. She wrote Society’s Child at 14. When released a couple years later it was really, really big.
You really felt this one. You didn't have to say a word. You are definitely someone I'd like to sit down with, do shots with, and talk with. Those years way back then were.... awkward. It's amazing what changes and what doesn't. What song would you sing about those years?
People sleep on these older artists. Also remember this is a live performance. So no vocal corrections, and everything else is perfect too. Scrib I’ve really been enjoying your channel lately I’d like you to react to Ruthless by Nonpoint if you have the time. Cheers!
I think Janis Ian is great. “Seventeen” , I think is the reason that character on Mean Girls was named Janis Ian. The first girl the befriends Cadee. So great.
A fun bit of nostalgia would be doing "Look what they've done to my song Ma" by Melanie with Miley Cyrus. I'm also hoping someone requests you do Kiki Dee's I got the music in me.
You have to give Janis a hell of a lot of credit for writing such a brutally honest song at the young age of 23. That takes some guts!
A sad but beautiful song which has truth.
This was a big hit for Janis Ian....and is still a great tune to this day.
She sang this as a musical guest on the very first Saturday Night Live in 1975.
Janis Ian, Carole King, Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon, all great singer songwriters worth exploring.
And Patti Smith….
I have heard this somg all my life and never could never put my finger on the rhythm. Its a slowed down samba.
Great job. great song
I've seen them all. You are the best.

Janis has a 2022 tour scheduled in sites across the US. I'm thinking of going.
Was about 8 when this song came out, and even at that young age, I knew this was deep…Heartbreaking and Beautiful
Such a beautifully sad song.
I think she wrote this when she was like 16,but no matter her age when she wrote it,it's an amazing song.

Janis is bi-racial. "Society's Child" is about an interracial dating.

This song has such a smooth and relaxing vibe. It's on my chill pill mix.
That’s what was great about ‘70s music. In that period, we threw off the buttoned-up social conventions of previous generations.

“Between the Lines” by Janis Ian is a great song. She plays piano on that one, in lieu of guitar, her voice really shines ✨ on that song 🎶
Think I just realized where Jewel got a heavy influence from

The best song of the At Seventeen album is 'From Me to You'
You should check it out.
That's a Bossa Nova beat and sound.
Scribe was checking out that bass line.
Phoebe Snow POETRY MAN, same era.
I see in your eyes the pain.
The way you reacted to her words....is the way you're supposed to react.
A fun bit of nostalgia would be doing "Look what they've done to my song Ma" by Melanie with Miley Cyrus. I'm also hoping someone requests you do Kiki Dee's I got the music in me.
Scribecash, that would be a good cover song. And instead of a guitar, you could play bass!
I saw her open up for Billy Joel . She was better standing on the stage by herself and her acoustic guitar
Beautiful and articulate , loved it at the time . Your clip seems out of sync...
You're beautiful.....but you've been through this haven't you ?
Lady are you ok ? You don't seem your usual feisty self 😮
KEEP PLAYING YOUR BASS GUITAR.
Racism. She’s talking about racism. She was not considered white when she was in school.
No she's talking about climate change and tax rates.
So many copycats on here now.....please.
