SEW A PILLOWCASE with 1 yard of fabric!

  • Pillowcases are THE easiest sewing project ever invented! And they're fun for any skill level, because all you need is 1 yard of fabric---and there are SO many cute prints out there. I make these for my kids year round, I give them as gifts to friends and cousins. They're the perfect little project. I'll show you two ways to make a standard-size pillowcase:
    • with quilting cotton fabric
    • with cozy fleece
    And then you'll be making them for everyone you know too.
    Come sew with me!

    Thank you for a simple pillowcase that isn’t a burrito type. Which are pretty simple, but this is simpler! Which I love! I also have a really cute fleece that has been just sitting around waiting for a project👍

  • @mkn309

    Loved your tutorial. I'd recommend keeping the fabric a little longer on one side, fold it in and stitch it in when you're sewing those edges. That way you have a fancy flap inside the case, and the pillow itself isn't visible and/or won't fall out.

    • @Angora573
      @Angora573 7 лет назад

      Yes I thought at first that was what she was doing with the wide hem she ironed. I like how that flap covers any pillows that are a bit larger than normal so that the bare pillow is not visible x

    These pillowcases are HUGE. I trusted that they were for standard pillows, and mine are swimming in the first one I made.

    • @janetbaker1945
      @janetbaker1945 6 лет назад

      PS: maybe loose cases are better than the snugger ones I've bought to fit my standard feather pillows. Maybe I'll sleep better. But if I had to adjust the pattern, after testing, I think I'd take an inch off the 44" width, and an inch of the 36" length. The case would still be a little loose but not floppy.

    Crib sheets are my go to baby present. Moms love them. Store purchased sheets are very skimpy and tight in size. Often moms ask for more since the store version is very difficult to put on mattress. I often use flannel and it doesn't seem to matter that the width of fabric is often less than 45" @ 42-43" wide. I make mine 72" long so they are easy to put on mattress.

    I've given this a go today... I couldn't work out which way my 'directional' fabric pattern should go, so I thought I would hop on here and just post a comment in case it helps someone else in the future. I cut the 44" length in the 'portrait' position (running along the side of the selvage edge....not 'landscape', longest side going upwards - away from you. It worked for my pattern, I hope it will help others who may be unsure. I'm also going to attach some KAM snaps to close the ends up, just so they pillowcase stays nice and tight, otherwise it'd come off. Great pattern though, thank you! x

      Thanks for watching. I don't have a video for making bedsheets, because it's difficult to find fabric that is wide enough for a bedsheet (other than a baby crib sheet). You can make them with standard fabrics, but you would have a seam down the middle. It seems easier to just buy sheets at the store :)...or if you are a manufacturer, then you can figure out having the exact fabric made for your sheets. Sorry!

    I needed to be reminded as it has been more years than I want to count since I took home ec. We were taught never to keep the salvage on the project because of the flexibility of the rest of the fabric and the salvage isn't flexible. It can cause the fabric to get sort of cockeyed.

    Thank you for your easy to use tutorials! I've watched many on different subjects for sewing and today I've decided that I like yours best. lol true. you make it easy, bright, fun, want to and I have sewn for many years and always look for an easier way! lol Just seems that at many times, the simple is the elegant.. etc. My hangup s on how to select the position of the buttons on sewing machine that regulate things like tension, thread stitch size, what to change numbers to and when and why.. Hope that made sense. If you ever make a video on that!, I'd love to see it. For now, I'm going for the fitted crib mattress sheet and pillowcase as you've shown. Again, love the simplicity.. I make pillowcases often, and have for about 40 yrs. For those starting out, fabric should be washed and dried before sewing. I always use cold water to wash, but even with low heat in the dryer, the fabric may shrink, especially if it’s 100% cotton, or cotton rich. Once prep is done, then the pillowcase should be measured to decide how big the hem will be. I’ve had some end up at 2.5”, not counting the initial 1/2”, because of shrinkage. To be on the safe side, I have my fabric cut at 1 1/8 yards.

    Hi Dana, first I have to tell you that I love your website/blog/RUclips videos!!! I have made 4 crib sheets with matching pillowcases (for my 2-yr old grandson). i just went out and bought some more fabrics to make crib sheets for our new baby granddaughter who is on the way. The question I have is if I can use knit fabric for pillowcases?

      Hi Geri, Awesome! And Thanks! Your grandkids are lucky to have a sewing grandma :) Yes, you can definitely use knit fabric for the pillowcases. Sounds soft and cozy! If you want to see what that's like....they sell Jersey Knit sheet sets at many retail shops. My kids have a set and they love them. Have fun sewing! And thanks for watching :) Dana

    In Australia our pillowcases ha a flap at the open end to keep the pillow in place and cover the end of the pillow.

    Thanks Dana, great tutorial as always. But can you do a tutorial on making a pillow case with a flap? I think they call them “housewives” pillow cases in England and they’re great because the flap secures the pillow inside the pillow case (if you know what I mean)?

      Hi Bev! Yes, I know what you mean....funny name for it :) I don't have a tutorial for that, but I do have an envelope pillow. I know it's not the same thing, but it might help you figure out how to do your version. You can see that video here: ruclips.net/video/6-QV3kA8WIM/видео.html

    Hi Dana, I'm a longtime fan of yours! I had to message you because I'm watching a video about the Johnny Depp defamation trial (May2022) and the video cut away for a commercial and it was for this pillowcase video of yours. I said out loud , to my cat lol, 'hey, I know that video!' I've never have seen a commercial on RUclips by someone I've known and followed. I thought you might enjoy knowing that I was watching the video with 222K other viewers! That's a lot of new pillowcases potentially being made in the future per your instructions. P.S. I haven't watched this video in years so I dropped it in my 'watch today' folder. I bet your children have grown very beautiful. I'll have to check out your recent work soon. Hope you are well. Cath from CT🌷🌷

    Hey Dana! I just recently stumbled across your videos and I'm in love with them :) I'm just starting to sew, and I was wondering if you could make a video explaining fabric basics to beginners. Things like different kinds of fabrics, what each kind is used for, what stitches to use for certain fabrics, etc.
    Thanks!

      Consider not using fleece--it's a plasticky product that sheds teeny bits with every washing. Microbits?
