Blown away. I feel like an idiot for not knowing this history. THIS is what needs to be taught to kids. So disgusting how much division is being pushed today. Flash and other founding fathers of hip hop should be recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize for bringing so many people together in such a deep and fundamental way. They tapped into the beat inside of all of us, regardless of skin, and provided a means to express it. Bringing a unity that can never be quantified.

Grand Master Flash is the reason I became a DJ. Growing up in NYC since the 80's, his name was everywhere on the streets. Breakdancing, break beats, and Hip Hop was a big part of my life and many New Yorkers. He pioneered and set the foundation for the DJ industry. His wisdom, mentality, and love of the art are the values that I try to follow. Listen to the Grand Master when he speaks of being a legend in your own mind vs being a legend for the people. Thank you Grandmaster Flash and Hot 97 for this video - One love!

Flowzah I guess you can say that. I mean Im a young guy, Im only 20 years old. My father always told me stories of grandmaster flash, DJ kool herc. I like how in the series of "The Get Down" it not only tells about these DJ legends, but it submerges you in the everyday life in the bronx in the 70s and the beginning of a new sound known as "hip hop". I actually learned a lot watching this tv show. If you haven't watched it already, I highly recommended it.

The DJ lesson and history is dope and all, but I'm bugging out on the fact that he still has his homie for over 50 years kicking it with him on Hot 97. That's the most impressive point of all of this! With all of the praise and acknowledgement he gets.... he still lets his homie help facilitate the lesson. AND gave him credit that his homie didn't even want to take. True legend.

Grandmaster Flash is the coolest! He came to my club..CLUB SENSATIONS in Newark,NJ. on the night we featured Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince performing "Girls of the world ain't nothing but trouble".My security team brought him and his crew to the Dj booth. After observing the show for a while, he asked me "Where are these guys from?" I told him that they were from Philadelphia. When jazzy Jeff when into some funky scratching, grandmaster flash turned to me and said "these dudes are pretty good!" This was a signal to his crew that they could give Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince ( Will Smith) professional props! And they did! I had already been told by Dj Red Alert that Grandmaster flash was just that confident, humble and cool!

Like with the band 'Suicide" flash when he did his first gigs the audience did not understand the new music...suicide were an electro dance new wave duo who used fast drum machine beats with the vocalist making weird strange sounds with lots of reverb and delay/echo...During the punk era of 76/77...these new innovators were not received to well by the audiences who wanted a band of rock musicians...But you will find that people like "Tangerine dream", suicide" were the for runners of the later techno, rave, dance music...Tangerine dream were experimenting with electro sounds and beats way back in 1970....

all respect due to the Grandmaster....
    but.....
there was a mixer called the GLI Disco 3800 that was one of the industry standards in the clubs and discos in the early to mid 70s. It had a crossfader built on it already.
While it's fully plausible that Flash learned how to build his own crossfader from Radio Shack parts, it's important to know that the crossfader was already on DJ mixers by then. In the History of Hip-Hop context, most DJs in the parks in the Bronx didn't have the financial means to be able to afford that expensive-ass mixer. And it's not like the older Disco DJs and promoters allowed or enjoyed having the young b-boy crowd at their events anyway so Flash was genius to figure out how to piece together that all-important crossfader. Before him, Herc wasn't really mixing on beat so a crossfader wasn't really important for how he played in the early stages. Flash made it a must-have feature in the context of mixing on time to extend the breaks.

I don't think so brother. He might have carried records for DJ Smoke and the Smokeatrons. Perhaps he need to elaborate more in regards to his own history of DJing in detail. However they are talking about how he evolved the way DJ's were playing music at the time and he created a quick mix theory to move the element of DJing and hip hop as a whole forward.

You could see a cloud of smoke over the small area that surrounded the DJ, all the time. Everyone would be dancing, drinking and smoking. This jams didn't last long though, because the cops would break them up. The cops would sometimes sit along side for a while before breaking things up. The music was amazing, and I heard music during that time that never left the city, I'd never hear it again anywhere else. The closest movie I've seen about growing up in the city is The Get Down, which is what I believe Flash is promoting in this video.

Technically Mumble rap is it’s own genre now, same with Emo Rap, so you can make the argument that regular Hip Hop is NOT those things because they are technically not anymore and we should be happy about that 🤣

Watching this I think it’s clear that the man is a true genius; the way he figured out the technical workings of the equipment by himself and then harnessed this knowledge to make the sound he wanted. Oh, and a visionary to have such a goal to motivate him to do all of it.
Always respected him before, but so much more after watching this.
Thank you Grandmaster Flash! And Thank you so much to Hot 97 for posting it!

Some people are hating saying he is talking about himself even tho the video is about him lol. He gives credit. However, he even said in the beginning that he approached DJaying like math. Yea there were many D jays before him but he approached DJaying in a much different way which is why he is recognized for all of this. There were many rappers before Eminem, but not many rappers approached "rhyming skills" the way Eminem did. You don't have to be the first to do something in order to be considered the greatest at it or a pioneer.

jamoes98T/A try the method of combining the drum solos of 2 different records to extend said solos to create Hip Hop when he debuted this method. he also implemented “toasting” or talking over the music which single handedly created rapping (given Jamaican DJ’s used this be he brought it to the US because he was a Jamaican-American)

@@DrFiji Check out this short documentary ruclips.net/video/2aLYjbC1utM/видео.html Give credit where credit is due. And I will add that Hip Hip started out as an AFRICAN AMERICAN phenom from the Bronx and was NOT started by Latin, Caribbean, or any other culture the mainstream is trying to accredited it to. As a matter of fact, Hip Hop was already on and crackin by the time Herc decided to participate. The problem is, most of the early Hip Hop DJ's don't mention Mario in their interviews or lectures.
