As a Mexican who lives in Mexico, who has lived here almost his entire life, who has a sister that has worked and talked to child sicarios in juvie and has come home with their heat-wrenching stories, I can say that this book is by no means inaccurate. I understand the criticisms regarding the severe lack of Latin voices in the publishing industry. However, that is not Cummins’s fault. She told a story, and she clearly came from a place of empathy. She shone a spotlight on an issue that doesn’t get discussed enough.
Should there be more Latin representation? Absolutely. Should we propel more stories like this but written by actual immigrants? Definitely. Should American Dirt have to pay for the decades, and still ongoing, misrepresentation of Hispanics? In my opinion, no.

I believe everyone involved intended to profit off of sensationalized propaganda; a fictional story that portrays the fantastical idea, that the vast majority of immigrants from south of the border
flee terror to come to the U.S.
It's intended purpose, the same as all liberal propaganda; to soften the hearts of the do gooder in people. To illicit a strong desire to signal their virtue to everyone around them. Hinder their ability to think critically for a long enough period to realize the demographic cultural fracture that's tearing their country apart. To keep hidden the realization their unified nation was relegated to an empire of two warring factions. Make heritage Americans feel empathy for other cultures while living in apathy to the degradation of their own. Anything to keep American Boomers slumbering long enough to realize; the only legacy they left their people was a fractured nation where only multinational corporations, the super rich, and poor foreigners looking to enrich their lives stand to gain. All for a fat 401k and the illusion of a good conscience.

That a bit of an oversimplification of immigration. My dad is Cuban, my grandparents came to the US from Cuba in the 1960’s- height of the Cold War and America let them in to stick it to Communism.
Most of the people who came were doctors, lawyers, business owners, people who were well off. They escaped for political reasons. So yeah, many times immigrants struggle financially, but that’s not always the case.
Definitely there is a desire for a better life or different opportunities, which may or may not actually happen in the US, because the US is a dumpster fire ... but that’s beside the point 😅 immigration is complex.

Poor Jeanine Cummins had to cancel her book tour due to threats of violence from nameless trolls protesting her book. Evidently since she is not a migrant herself, she shouldn't be allowed to write a fictional story about it, and certainly not a successful book. That's just not fair to all of the migrants. From the NPR.com website, Publisher Bob Miller states: "We should never have claimed that it was a novel that defined the migrant experience; we should not have said that Jeanine's husband was an undocumented immigrant while not specifying that he was from Ireland; we should not have had a centerpiece at our bookseller dinner last May that replicated the book jacket so tastelessly. We can now see how insensitive those and other decisions were, and we regret them.". Also from NPR.com "...critics have called the book inaccurate and full of harmful stereotypes, and questioned whether Cummins was the right person to tell that story." Just another instance of caving to the leftist mob. Let me get this straight, a publisher and author receive threats over their FICTIONAL novel, and then they are compelled to APOLOGIZE???? Just another instance of caving to the angry mob. A talented woman writes a terrific FICTIONAL novel (according to Oprah, I have not read it), about the migrant experience, but we tear her and the book down because she is not authentic enough? that there were some "insensitive" decisions in the rollout (well that sure is subjective, isn't it)? and writers should never include "harmful stereotypes" in their novels (again, subjective)? and the barbed wire on the book jacket was insensitive? This is scary people. Now, on the other hand, this could all be a ploy by the Publisher to sell more books, because rather than an "angry mob" it is probably just a dozen twitter trolls living in their parents basement.

It saddens me to read all the comments about how this woman, whom has EARNED the right to write about whatever makes her heart come alive, is viewed as UNWORTHY to write on our people because she is not Mexican. Since when is being Spanish not part of our heritage? Since when do we as a people that claim to have such a vast array of fundamentals in our culture that make us so much a part of the building of this nation, have the right to dictate, as if we were a dictatorship, whom is ALLOWED the right to write on this topic or that topic? It is this divisive nature in ourselves that will continue to tear apart this nation when we're quicker to judge and throw stones, instead of opening up our minds that one doesn't have to be Mexican to write about something they have taken the initiative on which to self educate. I'm proud of the writings of this woman who's own past is not far from this story she has written. So thank you Mrs. Cummins for this beautiful portrayal of what some people endure in order to build a more safe, stable, and healthy environment in which to raise their families.

@@serinadean9019 There are no neutral words; sensitive, intelligent writers are aware of that; no word has just one meaning; connotation is important; furthermore, as you know, many Latin Americans feel that the US has appropriated the word America; in Latin America, América refers to North, Central, and South America, or exclusively to Hispanic America, as in the poetic phrase, Nuestra América. Even in Canada, when one says, I am an American, they respond, I am too. The author seems to be superficially acquainted with the history and culture of those she wishes to portray.

That book premise is odd. The author wrote about Mexican migrants fleeing to America but Mexicans are not fleeing to the US the way she describes I dont think Mexicans have migrated at all in the last 15 years . Central Americans and South Americans are the ones crossing in masses something Mexicans never did. But i guess since the author is white she didnt do her homework and probably considers all of latinos Mexican which is completely inaccurate and ignorant. Why a white women would choose to write a fictional story on a country and culture and political issues affecting immigration when she has zero ties to it is beyond me, probably just to take advantage of a hot topic in the US and make some serious cash. Thank you Oprah for endorsing a ignorant authors ambitious book and that makes you Oprah ignorant and ambitious too.

T hi is is the best response so far! Why a made up story? why a white lady when there are many real immigrants with true stories. I don’t need to do research;I am the research. I wonder if I write a book Oprah will endorsement, but wait, I am not white. I am not a writer. I am just a Mexican who came here illegally and paid my price for it. I paid the price for such although I was an 11 year old who knew nothing about laws but hey I was expected to do otherwise. I paid the price for it and so did my family. Wait for my book.
