BIPOLAR MEDICATION: Do I Have to Take it Forever?

    A common question I get is “will I still have Bipolar episodes with the right meds?” The answer is yes! Which creates the follow up question...“Then why should I take meds if I'm still going to have episodes.” Let's talk about that today on Polar Warriors!
    I'd like to start off with an analogy. You are at work and you get the worst migraine headache you've ever had in your life. Your head feels like it's going to explode and it makes it impossible to focus on your tasks at work. You take some ibuprofen and it takes the edge off enough for you to finish the work day. It's still not a fun day, but the medication helps just enough to resume functioning.
    That's exactly what Bipolar medications do! They take the edge off. They reduce the severity and duration of our suffering. We aren't at a place in “brain science” to completely alleviate symptoms, or they would be called “cures” instead of “treatments.”
    I hope some of you out there found this video helpful. Meds are a touchy subject. I rarely talk about them on this channel because of many many reasons. First and foremost, I'm not a doctor. I'm just a professional patient with a RUclips channel! I also respect that what works for one person, might make things worse for someone else. Just like I wouldn't recommend reading glasses to someone I don't know, I'm not going to talk about specific meds on Polar Warriors.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    -My channel is completely dedicated to helping individuals, families, and friends who struggle with, or know someone living with Bipolar Disorder. My goal is to provide actual tools, tips, and discuss topics that can potentially help “Polar Warriors” grow to live a more balanced, peaceful, and fulfilling life.

    PLEASE be gentle and respectful in the comments. We know meds can be a touchy subject. As said in the video, meds are just one of many many treatment options out there. Because we respect everyone's different path to wellness, this is not the place to promote the latest diet, discuss specific meds, or post promotional links. Other than that, join the conversation and enjoy =)

    I was in denial about my bipolar disorder for 10 years and was on and off medication for that time. Some meds made me gain a lot of weight and one almost killed me, but now I'm on a good combination of meds and I don't get manic or depressed as long as I make sure I stick to my routines and get enough sleep. I still struggle with moods, especially anger. It seems to come out of nowhere and even scares me. I appreciate your videos. I have learned a lot and I didn't realize how different people had such different experiences with their bipolar disorder.

      Hi Mary, I got weight myself and I think I am a gentle person but some people everywhere everyday lacks of respect. I understand your anger. It's happening to me. I never kicked someone. But I get lonely the two days after to cool off. It's an everyday challenge to live with the disease. It's important to know what you can't do, even if you are brilliant.
      And it's important to do something useful or pleasant that you can do. And forget about impossible dreams. But I don't know if there is anything after life. I have this life and I want to live it to the fullest.

    My episodes have drastically dropped in destruction potential after my meds. Went from complete psychosis in 2019 to hypomania once every 3 months after I got the right prescription. Honestly, I don't mind taking meds forever. If they keep me mostly stable and as far away as possible from my psychosis episode, its completely worth it.

    I hope their will be a cure. I'm on 5 meds right now its taken me years to feel just ok. Not good just ok.. I sometimes I think I may need a second opinion . My doctor tried Lithium in 2018. I got really really sick after 2 months, it turns out my body wasn't able to absorb it so I had Lithium in my body just building to toxicity. The ER doctors thought I tried suicide via Lithium. I was really hoping it would work. The research I've done was either Lithium was really good or really bad.. Bipolar disorder is a lonely disease. And I'm asian so I'm considered crazy. I should take vitamins exercise and meditate.. im lucky to be Asian American where theirs help. In Thailand their are ONE psychiatrist per 250,000 people. Most goes to temple. Very difficult when one, or BOTH parties have Bipolar disorder and are either improperly diagnosed and/or refuse help and medication. Looking back, I spent the better part of my adolescent and adult life in a state of hypomania or in crippling depression I completely covered up and felt ashamed to even tell people about. It ruined a lot of relationships, and it's a true tragedy that the mental health system wants to give you SSRI's and and abandon you if you can't take them before they even consider Bipolar disorder. Probably 2/3 of my life was filled with madness that all could have been avoided. Most people think this is nothing more than us not being able to control our emotions. Some kind of weakness we have the power to stop. The truth is that it's crippling madness we're powerless over, and don't even realize it's affecting us most of the time. Patience and encouragement to get help is the key. Doing research to understand it before treating your partner like it's a character flaw they're doing on purpose is a huge help.

      Thing is, when I feel that way, I just remember that I honestly can't help it. I can't help the fact that the chemicals in my brain aren't working right. But I can help the fact that I'm taking my medication to help myself. To slowly get better. It won't go away fully, but it can get to a point I finally feel like living. We have to make it through. And just sulking in the fact that you have a mental illness is just not worth it. You get used to it. And in a way, it can help you grow too. Take care🖤

    With meds, I've noticed two things.
    First: in a Mental hospital, meditations are easy to adjust because they have you there, so they can see where you are improving.
    Second: with a psychiatrist, they will only change the dials once a month. It's a slow, but necessary adjustment.
    That doesn't mean that both parties can't make mistakes, but it's important to see where you are in the process.

      Because thrusting a freaked out patient into an abusive mental hospital will surely be a good controlled environment to analyze exact dosage effects. The whole plan is flawed when the hospitals are ran by corrupt organizations just looking to squeeze the most out of people with the cheapest care possible.

    I've learned self awareness of my cycles and I manage my lifestyle (sleep, regular food, no alcohol, exercise, stress etc) so I'm in the fortunate position of only taking meds if I need them, but it took 3 decades and a lot of heartache to get here. I'm not sure it was worth it, and if the meds that are around today had been available when I was diagnosed I probably would have stayed on them for life.

      Well done. You should be proud. You made, in my opinion, the right decision. All bipolar meds have awful side effects and many increase episode frequency (when people stop them or try to come off).

    thank you for sharing your experience, it is helping me tons and tons. I also appreciate knowing that other people have the same or similar issues that I do. I think that you are generous with your time and your words. I have been crashing down to depression and refusing to take some of the additional medication I NEED when things are bad due to the weight gain side effects. No body likes to be a fatty paty, but I seem to think that is better than suffering.... :) But I am going to take something now, to avoid a more serious mood swing.

      Hi Leslie! A very warm welcome to the channel. I’m so glad the videos have been helpful to you.
      I’m sorry to hear that you are struggling with some depression right now. The side effects from medication‘s can be horrendous, especially the weight gain. I hope you continue to find a good path to stability, with minimal side effects.

    Your analogy works really well here. I've got chronic migraines along with bipolar. I used to take anti-inflammatories and pain relievers daily along with my mood stabilizers. There are plenty of other steps to take for pain management but taking those daily pills allowed me to have enough energy to work on positive coping skills or at least let me do the bare minimum to take care of myself on my worst days. Luckily I my migraines have finally lessened over the years, becoming something that I only notice when I think about it, most of the time. I've found a good, steady dose for the first time a couple months ago so hopefully my mental health will have the same improvement!

  • @vezinam58
    @vezinam58 3 года назад +6

    The migraine analogy was interesting Rob. I actually suffered with migraines for most of my life until a Doctor put me on a diet the eliminated migraine triggers. It sure would be nice if there was a simpler protocol like that to help people suffering with mental illnesses. I hope all is well with you Rob. Take care. 😊

    • @lizhyink5636
      @lizhyink5636 3 года назад +2

      Yeah, agreed. Well said. Glad you found something that works for you. ( I get migraines too, and have since childhood. Back then, I was advised to stay hydrated, reduce glutamate foods like parmesan, etc. I have learned in adulthood that there are a variety of types of migraines, they are inherited conditions, and can be triggered by sleep changes- or lack of, stress, pressure changes in the weather, skipping meals, etc.) I have read about a specific diet before, (without trying it myself), that aims to keep blood sugar levels steady as possible, (much like milder diabetic management that doesn't involve blood sugar monitors), only to even out mood swings by avoiding sugar rushes and crashes. - Not saying it is right or wrong, or even that you need to share your strategy specifics. (* For anyone who might read this and think they can do it best with a scientific approach: *please leave blood sugar supplies for diabetics who need them.) Personally, just remembering routines and mealtimes, creating structure can help a bit with both migraines and moods *sometimes*. To be fair, this approach is flexible by design, because it is supplemental and not singular. It's a loose outline to leave room for other changing ideas, as mentioned in the video, too.
      ( I added in some afterthoughts once this was posted. The fact that each person can edit themselves here by tapping the vertical row of three dots on the lower right corner is much appreciated.)

    Seeing such a drastic change in my mood has been a huge benefit to taking my meds. I am fortunate to have found a combination that works best for me right out the gate. However I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t sometimes overwhelmed about having to take meds for the rest of my life. How I wish I could be stable without them.

  • @winterkrash
    @winterkrash 3 года назад

    Yeah, I can notice the changes in me when I don’t take meds and not. People around me notice as well.
    It took us several trial and errors to find the right combo. I specifically told my new psychiatrist that I don’t like taking too many meds. And so she tried to limit it to two. Good thing we found one that worked-Valproic acid and Lamotrigine. Quetiapine made my life hell, while for others it’s a god-send. Just goes to show that as you said, what works for you won’t automatically work for others.

    Comparing bipolar to migraine is unfair because it difficult they may only 3-4 days or a week as you know bipolar is for life.
    I not taken medication for over two years and it not always been easy but in to the source of the the problems has helped me I not it not for not everyone can do that I came off prescription drugs because I was abusing them using to mask problems I need to deal with I love being g drug free and going backyards or as a temporary is not an answer for me.
    I know sleep without sleeping tablets I do meditation yoga tai chi exercise don't drink limit caffeine and stressesors I know when I not well and when I need help on the understanding I will not take medication again I also have M.E like you Rob I .I like your videos and honesty I wish my life as simple as just bipolar no disrespect that is manageable Scitzppherena also

I know we have to keep ploughing through each day, hoping for the disorder to give us some breathing space, but it seems that’s all we seem to be searching for; breathing space amongst the chaos.
    Then we have to fit our daily living in around it, somehow 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’m angry! Angry I have it atm, because I’m being controlled by the BP2 atm, instead of us working together. I was considering coming off the meds, I even told myself I don’t have it, but that’s one of the symptoms 😂 so…. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Well done to those on their road to recovery, keep at it those who’re struggling & I BLOODY LOVE THIS CHANNEL👌🏽

You can’t get Depakote in my dose in uk now for whatever reason.I have Bi polar 2 which at 51 years of age had become quite mild, very mixed episodes and rapid cycling. Cyclothymia The side effects of meds were becoming too much aching muscles nausea to name but a couple. Have been off these now for a couple of months and am managing illness with exercise reading relaxing and very importantly avoiding stress. No alcohol very important with this illness!!I have just bought a kayak. Love hiking camping & cycling. I live to do these things you have go out there when you have this illness and do stuff hard as that sounds when you just don’t feel like it. Getting over the doorstep is the biggest hurdle. I was diagnosed 20 plus years ago and know how I feel and what I can do to try and keep things under control. The health care in the UK is now shocking and I have to manage this illness myself. Good luck to everyone out there take meds if they help but get out and do loads of hobbies exercise you will see the benefits.
