A tip that might help others, you have to let air flow over your tongue and underneath the whistle, there may be other ways to do it but that definitely worked for me

I don't see how you could choke on it??? I mean if your not using it properly I guess, but otherwise, with mine atleast, the sides on it are clamped in my teeth while I'm making the noises

Better options. Amazon has some and theres a seller on Etsy that has vintage ones from Japan that are made with leather. I bought some from them and they are great
When i was a kid (70! yr ago) I could do this. Years later I bought some. And years after that (today) I rediscovered some. Now, I can't do it to save my life. Being reputedly wiser (sure) I can imagine me inhaling the damn thing with dire consequences. So I'm binning them to avoid someone else falling victim. Sigh.
You don't need that thing to make these sounds. You can do the same with just your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Thee tip of your tongue touches the mid point of the roof of your mouth like you are going to sssssssss like a snake, then adjust your tongue to cover most space but leave a whistle hole on either side of the mid point. You can the flex and tighten your tongue to make the chirps or trills and make a very high pitched tight whistle.
First time trying it today. I noticed picking it up from the floor quite a times when I start to laugh trying the spitting sound. So I wore a mask to block it and it worked. Sometimes it sounds like a chimpanzee and I'll start to laugh again. This is fun and challenging. This guy should make another tutorial on how to blow
No. The whistle is actualy bigger than it seems like it would be. It would be hard to choke on it. Especially sense my teeth kinda clamp on the sides of mine (mine are leather)

We had these as kids, we all sounded like 2 stroke scooters much to the annoyance of the school teachers. They were soon banned at school.

You shouldn't need to, the paper will bend slightly to form around it but the metal stays flat
