When i was a kid (70! yr ago) I could do this. Years later I bought some. And years after that (today) I rediscovered some. Now, I can't do it to save my life. Being reputedly wiser (sure) I can imagine me inhaling the damn thing with dire consequences. So I'm binning them to avoid someone else falling victim. Sigh.
You don't need that thing to make these sounds. You can do the same with just your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Thee tip of your tongue touches the mid point of the roof of your mouth like you are going to sssssssss like a snake, then adjust your tongue to cover most space but leave a whistle hole on either side of the mid point. You can the flex and tighten your tongue to make the chirps or trills and make a very high pitched tight whistle.
Thanks for the tips i needed all the help i could get using this with my niece ... hes Like the guy at the batting cage hitting 100mph curveball with a blindfold making it look effortless and says " here have a go its not that hard!" ... you take a liner to the face and join the soccer team haha .
No. The whistle is actualy bigger than it seems like it would be. It would be hard to choke on it. Especially sense my teeth kinda clamp on the sides of mine (mine are leather)
I don't see how you could choke on it??? I mean if your not using it properly I guess, but otherwise, with mine atleast, the sides on it are clamped in my teeth while I'm making the noises

We had these as kids, we all sounded like 2 stroke scooters much to the annoyance of the school teachers. They were soon banned at school.
