Being a middle blocker is like being the volleyball court's janitor - you're always cleaning up messes! You read the setter like a psychic, only to get sent scrambling across the court anyway. One minute you're a human wall, the next you're playing vertical tennis against hitters with cannons for arms. But those perfect slide kills - the crowd's roar makes you feel invincible! Just don't get cocky, or the libero will make you pay. It's a rollercoaster of glory and confusion, but hey, that's the thrill of being a middle!

i personally think that middles are very important to the match because of them drawing the blocks. Its so much easier as a setter when i can establish my middle as a threat to score early so the blockers cant cheat over to the outside or right side as much, making it much easier to get them single/no blockers.

The joy of playing a setter is the best feeling ever, I swear. Especially when you play with really skilled players with whom you can perform various stuff! But the best part of it is when you absolutely destroy other team's blockers and create an open sky for the hitter or when you make a perfect fake set, that just sends shivers down my spine. As someone who prefers to play left side, here is how I see it. Everyone will be different and the list is subjective. I only started playing in my mid 20's but I got good enough quickly as I mainly trained with varsity players. Late learning, but I got to see what I thought would be easiest for me to pickup quickly. It really depends on the person, and you need to identify what you like and can get good at.
    As far as easiest goes
Opposite is the easiest, outside next, libero, middle(depends on height, but based on me at 6' and slow), and then setter.
Outside you just fix balls and get kills, identify the block, and be a decent receiver and you are good. Opposite is the same, minus passing, but I find hitting down the line harder. Receiving is harder to pick up than hitting line from right side though.
Libero needs to be the best receiver and setter from the back row. If an outside misses a ball, you can let it slide more than a libero. The defence is on his back, and him messing up a receive is a problem. Lots of pressure. A good set and a good hit starts with a good receive. Hate on liberos all you want, but they are the start to your good hits.
Middle because it's a lot of jumping and turning, plus you have to be quick to get a good kill. 2 blockers is the usual, 1 is the minimum if you aren't fast enough. So you need to be good at identifying the block and picking a location fairly quick.
Setter for obvious reasons. Base position is 1 and I know a lot of receivers that don't get the ball high enough for them. They have to make a decision on up to 5 hitters on the court based on how everyone on your team and the other is oriented. That's before you consider silky hands that can float the ball within a small area for the hitter to hit it.
It is possible I could be too dumb for setter, but I can hit a solid 3m line bounce(done it twice in one day recently, but the net was 7'10) and cross from the left side. As an outside, I just have to be powerful and accurate. If I get a good set, I feel like ass if I miss because I know how good it was and I feel like I let them down. Hitting a line shot 3' out to the left kills me when the set is mint.

  • @speedymathias8224
    @speedymathias8224 2 месяца назад +5

As a middle I agree with the fun, I would even rank it lower. Skill is decently ranked as you need to account for everything a setter needs to account for but then you need to take it a step further and move to make that choice, that takes insane reaction time and is a very difficult skillset to master. But for importance I just gotta disagree. Think what will happen if a middle is late to the block or miss judges, without a middle the spiker will almost definitely have a 1 on 1 on the wings and a no block kill at the middle. It is also very important to fake out other players to give the wings better chances to score by luring them away. The middle is one of if not the MOST IMPORTANT positions if a middle and setter have chemistry. If a setter can get it to the middle on an out of system play like we can see in the VNL and european league then there will always be a threat and it will always be important.
    I rest my case.

  • @jacquelinelever4822

As a Libero, I think a middle is VERY important. How hard is it to dig a spike with no block? It turns from doable to impossible. If you don't have a well formed block in the front row, it makes defense in the back row incredibly hard (i.e. middle back pulling forward to cover a gap in the block leaves the deep court open). I do agree that offense is more important than defense, but it is impossible to have a good offense without a good defense creating opportunities for attacks. Even if a middle doesn't block their matchup 100% of the time, they are decreasing the options the opposing attacker has, that attacker is now forced to hit around the block rather than anywhere they want. All in all though, I think the rankings were pretty solid.

  • @selman762
    @selman762 2 месяца назад +1

I think you summed it up pretty well but still everyone is different
As a short person who previously played offense I couldn't wait to be in the back row and now that I'm a libero I'm more confident and at ease
So I think everyone should ask themselves what is the best volleyball position for *them*

  • @TwistedTeaFate

I'm a short middle (6'2") but I've always loved middle. I love blocking, and hitting quick sets is a lot of fun. HOWEVER I will admit I complain about my setters and my knees a lot.
I'm pretty good at making up for my low height, very fast on blocks, good at hitting around blocks too, but I HARD agree that middles have low impact. There have been times where I played for bad teams, and so just felt helpless. Bad passes mean you never get set, and bad setter means you can't hit properly or consistently. And if your pins are bad, then it's a nightmare trying to solo block all 3 hitters on the opposing team

But then when get that one moment when everything is right and the flow and course of the game is ruled by you just feels so good.

Honestly in lower leagues and teams where you might not have a libero, its pretty fun to play middle because you are not getting swapped out and have to serve and basically be a libero who can also sometimes attack while being in the back row. But i can imagine it would be something different if you only stand in the front for 3 rotations and might not get any impact.

I have to say middle is a blast. It’s like a 1 man army to stop the other team. Either the team chance balls or does a push to get the ball over. I don’t let anyone have an easy hit as the middle. Stuffing spikes or spiking an opponent’s misplaced set are rewarding moments. Your team gains a bit of relief and a moral boost from seeing the plays. Not to mention being a decoy so your hitters can have open hits. Throw in a few good set plays so the opponents think you are setting the second hit but… you spike instead. Middle is so close to the setter that the other team has to play against your minus tempo. Back row is manageable with pipe hits, do a back row jump sets or a set rotation to solidify your “setting” prowess. Proceed to dunk on the second hit.

  • @SimplyDumplingyt
    @SimplyDumplingyt 9 дней назад

As an outside, I can definetly comfirm that outsides are SOOOO much fun and you can bring your whole team back with some spikes, even though my blocks are rusty. However, I do admire all the other position and honestly I think middles should have a better score!

I love playing opposite hitter. In lower level play opposite hitters tend to be more defensive and all-around then just a power hitter. I'm not talking about at the college or professional level obviously. So you end up needing to have all the skills like an outside, but also potentially back-up setting as well. So you need to have a average / above-average skill in all facets of the game. I love being able to do a piece of everything and back-up everything up. But that's just the leagues / level I play at.

I feel like skill for middle should have been a point or two higher because while constantly jumping up and down around the court you have to read the whole front line not just the setter and who they are going to set to, but also the hitters because you can’t know how they are going to spike. Even though being a middle is easier if you are taller, it is not an easy position, commonly getting overlooked

For example: in the 9 years I have been coaching we have been lacking on opposite hitters... then your score falls into place. This year however we have a machine!!! Tall, athletic, wicked serves and above all super effective opposite hitter! Importance to the game?!?! 10 out of 10 now! That guy hits like Bartosz Kurek. I guess you haven't played with someone like that before?! It really changes your game... opens up the court for the setter on both ends of the net. I play as a middle in an amateur team and we are not lucky enough to have anyone capable of playing the libero role well.
So I'm lucky enough to be able to play in all 6 positions.
And so it's definitely really fun.
But I understand that otherwise it could be much less so.

My club coach puts me at outside hitter but I would rather be right side because then I don’t get the ball as much because I’m kinda short and it hurts me knees to have to just up all the way when I’m short

Personally I completely agree. Maybe buff up the opposites skill to 4 cause on a new team with an average setter, they won’t be able to set back as well meaning you would need to be able to adjust a bit more. That’s only when they do set opposite tho

I play as setter but i played as a opposite hitler the most of the time. I believe that mentally the setter is the most exhausting. Seeing blocks stopping attacks, having to make a good pass with mediocre receptions. Physically I don't feel very tired, especially if I have good receptors. As an opposite hitler
r, it's pretty simple. I usually don't receive it despite being very good at receiving it. And I have very few opportunities to attack and when the opponent's block delays, it's very simple. I played as a hitter for a while. It's complicated because the block is always very strong. The good thing is that I always receive passes and can always attack whenever I want. As I'm short I can't always be attacking. therefore be opposite. But as a setter I can say that it is the most difficult. The mental weight is absurd and sometimes even when you're not tired, the psychological burden seems to hold your muscles back.

As a 6’1” middle, I’d have to disagree with the score.
As the “front line” for the defense middles deserve a much higher importance score. Add to the fact that an established middle attack on offense is what creates the 1-on-1 hitter to blocker opportunity that opens up the options for the outside hitter to absolutely HAM on the opposing team. Include the physicality needed to be a middle and it tips the scales even more. Personally, I find it fun to play middle and the fact that no one else wants to play it means I’ll always find a team to be on. So that part is fun, the physical demands on being a middle (and the knee complaints), well… you got that part right😂
In my book, it’s setters, OHs, middles, oppos, liberos, serving specialists.
Don’t agree? Height aside…put an oppo as a middle, watch the outcome of the game and how much harder the liberos have to work. Put a middle in as an oppo, watch that middle cook!

My ratings for positions (making them in the order you put them):
    Serving specialist
Skill: 4, I think serving is easier to practice and get better at than the rest.
    Importance: 2, too situational
    Fun: 1 as well
    Total: 7
    Middle
Skill: 7, depends on your physical prowess. If you're a shorter but flexible middle, like me, you'll be able to do so much more than just block and hit hard. Many last resort balls have come to me, and I actually deal with them by intentionally tooling most of the time. And I have good serving, passing and defense compared to what is expected from a middle in my age and height.
Importance: this, I HAVE to disagree. 6. Any spiker knows the frustration of always having to face a double block if your middle isn't good, and all of the defense will cry if your middle doesn't at least soft block. I admit that when things get "desperate", the middle won't do much, but they're still the central (hehe) pieces of blocking and defense.
Fun: this will be heavily tied to your setter, tied to your passers and a bit tied to the overall skill of the spikers playing. It can fluctuate between a 4 and an 8, where 4 is pretty much the setter never sets you, and 8 is when the setter and you use your skills well and accordingly.
Total: 17 to 21 (average is 19, MY average is 20, I like it a lot)
    Opposite
Skill: to be an opposite worth your damn, AT LEAST 4. You'll need to be an attacking monster (be it by strength or technique, and in the backrow) and hold yourself well in serving and defending.
Importance: 7, slightly agree, but with how opposites play today, I think if they're a little bit behind, the setter gets stressed much more easily.
Fun: nah. I played opposite for a good while and it's not as fun as the rest (except serving specialist). I give it a 7 at best
    Total: 18
    Libero
    Skill: 8, agreed.
Importance: 6, we, Brazilians, just KNOW how important a libero on their game is. Serginho just has everything... and the difference between our Tokyo Olympics and Katowice World Championship was Thales Hoss being off his game in the first (I still have nightmares about that 4th place), and on his game in the latter.
    Fun: 6, agreed.
    Total: 20
    Outside Hitter
Skill: 10, I think it's, physically and technically, the most difficult position (not the most complicated, simply the most difficult and under some of the highest pressure).
    Importance: 9, agreed.
Fun: 7, I really don't think enthusiastically when I have to play outside when we have too many middles and all of them have to practice for us to see who's better, even though I have enough skill to become one with more focused practice.
Total: 26 as well, different personal reasoning
    Setter
    Skill: 10, agreed as well
Importance: 8. You'll KNOW if your setter is bad. The only parts in which a setter can't do much is if you need to emergency set a highball to your outside or opposite, or when your spikers are simply killing everything. Otherwise, EVERY PLAY will have your hands in it.
Fun: too variable, in my opinion, 5 to 9. Can't really explain it.
Total: 23 to 27 (my average coincides with the general average, 25)
Ranking, best to worst: Outside (26), Setter (25), Libero (20, edited in because I forgot it), Middle (19), Opposite (18), Serving Specialist (7).

As a libero I say that I would still be one If I was twice my height, I just love the adrenaline but it's not so fun when you're not doing good. It is possible for a libero to have the match on their shoulders (I've had it many times especially when I was in a lower category) I still don't think it's the hardest position, it just requires commitment and it's fun if you like it. As I am getting better i'm learning about the importance of each position and how much I like mine. Also if there's not a good defense then there could not be an offense so I like my job. And i've played other positions too for games (I'd never be a setter tho, I can't even set with my arms) My respect for setters.

I played as a Libero for 6 years in my nationals team, It was taking a toll on my knees so I made the decision to switch to a Setter, I've been doing that for 3 years now. I can say whole heartedly that being a Libero is far more difficult than being a Setter, I'd say libero is a 10/10 and Setter is a 7-10 in terms of difficulty, equal with impact in a match at 8/10, and Libero is a 8/10 for fun while Setter is a 7/10. Both are some of the best positions, but I think Libero slightly takes it.

I’ve played as a libero, outside, opposite, setter, and DS and I think opposite is way harder than people give it credit for because they have the smallest room to hit and have the least options so we have to be able to adjust all the time and have to block the outside which is the most prominent hitter on the other side of the court i also think the defensive positions deserved a little more credit but setter is 1000% the hardest position

ok i LOVE being a libero because i enjoy wasting my energy on saving the ball. And i get to do that a lot cuz my team does nothing but hit balls out of the court. (guys im being extra a ball only goes out once every two games so don't dis me) but i do get SUPER tired after a game. i really like that feeling i get when i save a ball that went really far like i get goosebumps it makes me so happy and then i get all the cudos afterwards 😚

The only thing I disagree with is middle blocker's importance! Timing with blocks, being able to cut off area of which I outside can hit, as well as the ability to produce points!
I'm a setter/opposite hitter! I get called to play middle because of my height sometimes and it is definitely a big job

as someone who's played as an outside, an opposite, and a setter (when ours is injured), i think setters definitely so frustrating cause there's too many possibilities to account for, and middle is the WORST. Personally, middle is too much for me, it's like i have to think much faster than usual (even more than setter...). Opposite sucks cause you never get set honestly but when you do (since im a leftie) you get to destroy! And i don't usually play outside but playing outside is awesome cause you always get set...

Let me spoil it for anybody who reads the comments before watching the video.
Setter. This person controls the game and sets up the hitters to score the points. He is like the quarterback on a football team, the point guard on a basketball team, and the catcher on a baseball team.
Now I will watch the video and see if he says the same position.
