  • In this video I demonstrate how to solder a wire to a metal lug on a large plastic bodied switch. The plastic body is easily damaged by heat so it is important to be quick and precise.

Hi great video, I'm practice my solder as i would like to solder 4 toggle switches like you have just shown for lights in my van. I'm going to solder them due to being restricted on space behind the switches.
I was wondering how hot your soldering iron is please?
I think I've answered my own question but if I use a thick gauge of wire to what you have, well it will take longer to heat up and then melt the switch?

How many watts was that soldering iron?

45W if I remember correctly. However, I don't think the wattage is important for this switch as there isn't a lot of thermal mass to the connector. I believe I could solder the same switch using my 15W iron.

@@PizzeyTechnology I tried something similar the other day with no luck.
I didn't hold the wire and terminal; they were simply floating in the air about an inch from where I held the wire in a vice.
I think I need to hold the terminal better so the soldering iron can touch it better and let the heat sink in.
It's not the soldering iron; it's my technique.

What did you set you temp to for the soldering iron?

What about soldering the spade connector to the terminal? I ask because I broke of a terminal and there was a 1/4" left that I can get the spade on, but it needs something more to keep it from coming off with some vibration. It is on a in tank fuel filter with a built in sending unit.

You may be able to solder a wire directly to the broken terminal. If you need a push fit connector, you could crimp a male connector to this wire. Make sure you clean the broken terminal well before you attempt soldering.

Thanks for the quick reply! Soldering the wire directly on was another idea I was considering, assuming the wire is long enough. Appreciate you putting out helpful content. Subscribed

What am I doing wrong. Got 4 soldering irons here, do you think I can get solder to stick ? Not a chance, even after 10 minutes I can melt the solder on the iron but not the wire or terminal.

Maybe prepare the surface more with a wire brush get the metals shiny

I've probably got two or three. They come in handy.

can you solder the one with the terminal adapter on it? or should i just do wire to terminal? it's inside subwoofer box.

    • @PizzeyTechnology

You can solder the type with push fit terminal tabs to make a more permanent connection, but if it's a plastic bodied switch take care you don't overheat it and damage the switch.
How will your switch mount in the subwoofer box? In some instances you'll need to feed internal cables out through the mounting hole before soldering.

@@PizzeyTechnology na it wasn't a switch it was speaker terminals for sub and box. but after soldering terminals to one side i found it easier to just solder wire straight to terminal instead of using connectors.
new to soldering but thanks for the vid/response. every little bit helps and live and learn i guess.

@@XX-121 if it's not a switch then making a permanent solder connection sounds the right thing to do. The more soldering you do the better you'll be.

    So solder its much better?

Soldering generally gives a more robust connection, but crimp terminals are convenient (if you have a crimping tool) and may need to disconnect.
