It's nice that you succeed in capturing the "spirit" of each DAW, not only enumerating a series of technical characteristics. It gives a more exact idea of what the user can expect.
I've been using Waveform and I'm blown away by how good it is. Yes the workflow is different, but not difficult once you get the concept "wiring" things together to stack instruments and effects together on a track, similar to the instrument/effects chain in Ableton.
@@MoltenMusicTech LOL I saw the word "free" and I just knew someone would be in the chat mentioning REAPER it gets mentioned all the time, being a free DAW I mean, the cockos guys probably don't care that people are not bothering to care, but it's a great DAW and well worth the sixty quid every three years or so
Nicely done. Coming from an 'analog' background in the 70's/80's, and migrating to the digital domain in the 90's, I've been really liking the all around appeal of Luna, but particularly its layout/flow and visual appeal. Although I still do all of my outboard recording/editing in Sound Forge (since beta testing the initial release, way way back). There is also the freebee *Fairlight* portion of DaVinci Resolve, which is itself, free. Lots of built-in effects/processes, and it hosts Vst's and AU.
Ha, interesting. I’ve used sound forge since version 4, although I rarely do these days. Funnily enough I opened it today (v13) to resample something. And good point about Fairlight, as I’m a user of Resolve but I don’t really think of it as DAW
Used to use GarageBand as an instrument rack for Live gigs, Very easy to program multi sound set per song to a full set. Dead reliable live …sounded great and served me well👍 Srry pc folk 🥴
Luna without the paid Pro bundle extension is extremely feature poor so you will have to download a lot of free plugins to have everything that you need for producing music. Also Luna focuses on emulation of vintage studio gear so you will have to learn how those things work because the controls of vintage equipment are not always intuitive for beginners.
If you are not a beginner, you probably already own a bunch of important plugs, so this is not an issue. If you ARE a beginner, this may not be the best tool. But if the complexity doesn't confuse you, it's a master class in DAW design, IMHO.
Ok, for the record today I try theses on my snapdragon surface : zenbeats => no way to configure Asio4all (where is this damn button to launch Asio Configurator ?) and it didn't work very well with Wasapi (no inputs available ?...) Luna refuse to install (installer says bad cpu...). Waveform => I use Tracktion software since ten years, and there's always the same bugs, but otherwise it works efficiently. Today it's my main Daw And the not free but in perpetual evaluation Reaper => It works surprisingly well ! No need Asio, 10 ms latency with wasapi. Perhaps i 'll continue to evaluate it a little longer ;) I will test the others laters (obviously not GarageBand ;) )
Surprised that there's no mention of Ardour aka the basis for Harrison Mixbus (then again that's only free on Linux/etc). Great list though, and thanks for pointing out that Reaper isn't actually free!
Oh right, they should make that a bit clearer. I scanned through the features and saw lots of Linux style references, and clicked on “releases” and was shown the check/sum nightmare of Linux installers. So you’ll have to forgive my assumption. Plugin support looks good, but no ASIO which is a shame. Definitely worth considering, I’ll check it out when I come to update the video. Thanks for the heads up.
No, I mean that I went just now to download the Windows version I have a choice to subscribe or make a single payment - they are not asking for much, but it's not free - community.ardour.org/download?platform=win&architecture=x86_64&type=compiled&paymentSelection=options
The Free version is the same version number and same core program but without some of the added advanced features and instruments. You can now add on features using packs or get the Pro version if you need. The Free version is very capable with few limitations. They recently added a clip launcher and stem separation. Those, for example, are in the Pro version but not the Free.
If you are monitoring a hardware synth locally then yes, but I was referring to using software instruments where the latency of using an online DAW is too great for real-time use. Cakewalk has been discontinued.
It's still supported regards maintenance but no new development. However it is still...unlimited tracks (audio and midi) supports all vat and vst3, totally integrated into native instruments, analogue etc. I still think it is THE best free software DAW available personally but that is subjective n all that

so glad you point out that REAPER is not a free DAW

it is, however, an excellent and very cheap DAW

Interestingly, GarageBand is "free," but is only available on pricey Macs. REAPER is $60, but can run on a $150 computer. 🙂

Ah ok, Linux only, which makes it very niche indeed. Looks great though for a very small number of users.

LUNA is gorgeous, - update, it DOES now support VSTs. So not for a beginner, but a beautiful design.
My understanding is that it's VST3 only, so that excludes a lot of plug-ins.
@@gordontubbs Let's be honest here, all the major and most functional plugins everyone uses nowadays are in VST3 format.

Nice video Robin. Can anyone advise if Tracktion Waveforms welcome pack is worth the $10?
I don't know what that is, sorry
Tracktion stopped the older-version-free plan no later than Waveform 13; same version as Pro from now on.
