Odessa Permian went 16-0 and were State and National Champions. The Midland Lee Rebels were one of their biggest challenges. The game came down to the final play and a goal line stand. 17-13 Permian. The Rebels and Permian nearly faced each other again in the single bracket highest class 5A at the time, but Arlington Lamar spoiled the Rebels chance for a rematch. Permian went on to beat Arlington Lamar 20-10 and won the State Championship against Aldine two games later after beating Marshall twice in a single season.
