      I have one more question.... Do you use bristle brushes or synthetic brushes? Sometimes your paint looks really smooth like a softer bristle brush but your brush looks like a Robert Simmons bristle brush... I'm not looking for a brand recommendation but a bristle recommendation... My natural style of painting is very similar to what you do... That's why I really connect to your videos... But I have yet to be really happy with brushes. I have tried synthetic brushes and I have tried bristle brushes... I have never used sables.... What bristle type do you use?

    • @IanRobertsMasteringComposition
      @IanRobertsMasteringComposition  Год назад +1

      @@cloverhoney6203 I use hogshair filberts. The company I loved Manet, French, went out of business a few years ago. Held their shape forever. I mean until I grounded the bristles away. Now Robert Simmons is fine. Trekell. I don’t mind synthetics but for thinner paint. I think you need the hogshair to hold more paint.
      All the best and best of luck.

Even the great masters who painted in watercolour as well I noticed their oil paintings were far better than their watercolours because it’s such an unforgiving medium

    turned out really good. I've seen a few works that are done in this 'bold' style.
    I have no background in art other than painting back in grade school, until I was zoning out to Bob Ross this past April (have seen his shows since the beginning). I thought, kids are grown and on their own, I have disposable income finally, what the hell, I'll try painting.
    I did quickly learn that I have a LOT to learn. But I've been improving and have tried a few things outside of what I've seen in landscapes.
    Might just try this method/style and see what happens. Hell, I may like the results!
    thanks for the video!

    Hello, Ian!
    I've been binging a lot of your videos recently and I've got a question - that is, What do you do with your leftover paint on the palette once you're done painting? I primarily work in acrylics, and it's such a shame when I've done things like mixed too much of a colour and have to watch it go down the drain or into the garbage. I know you're using oils... But, is there a way you preserve them? I'm interested to hear your response.
    Thank you!

    Zakharov created his works mostly in Crimea, and in Chernihiv region of Ukraine, he's honoured Ukrainian artist, was awarded the Shevchenko National Prize in 1987, the highest Ukrainian award for art and literature. Let's hope Crimea will be soon unoccupied, so you will have a chance to visit the places from his artworks)

      Well I have been told a few times in comments here he is Ukrainian. I will be sure to mention that next month. Based on what I've seen the Crimea seems to be really beautiful.

    This isn’t the point of todays video, but watching you work always reminds me how brilliant colors are made by the very neutral neutrals that support them!! It always strikes me how much of the process is neutrals when your final results always end up feeling colorful.

      Thank you. That is kind of you to say. Painting really is like juggling - have to focus on a lot of things at once. Color in composition is one of them.

    I'm still a great fan of Goodridge Roberts; Ontario landscape painter of mid-20th century Canadian art and should be much better known than he is -- wonderful textures and brushwork.

      I definitely know his painting. Grew up with it really. No relation to me. They made a monograph of his work I remember. Cover had a beautiful still life that wasn't what I thought of him for at all.

    That was fantastic! So much fun! Seems everyone is looking to Russian Impressionists now. I am too. I have wanted to be looser. I no longer want to paint things, I want to paint color and light. I would love to see your master painting of Fedor Zakharov. I am still struggling with underpaintings. This video was instructive and freeing. Thanks, Andréa

    Enjoyed this video very much. Came across Zakharov's paintings fairly recently and found them very interesting. Timkov as well, after watching one of your videos where you mentioned him and showed some of his paintings. Can't seem to find any books with Timkovs paintings either.

    Very helpful, Ian, seeing you push your comfort zone. It’s interesting that it was most obvious to me when you painted the sky at the very outset. It was quite different from any we’ve seen you paint before. I don’t know if you were forcing your boldness but it was bold. Then you next painted the tree and vegetation and it seemed your colors and strokes were more carefully considered. Not that it’s disappointing, just different. The painting is beautiful but my favorite parts are the sky and the just slightly tamer walkway with its pinks and golds. I remember reading about the idea of looking and painting with a “fresh, naive eye” - delete “foliage” from your mind and just see a color and shape and quickly throw it down before you can think about it. Ha! Anyway, this was fun and helpful as always. Thank you!

    • @IanRobertsMasteringComposition

      I am thinking to try it again and just keep up that boldness in the sky throughout the painting. If I do I'll show it. All the best.

    Greetings Ian, thank you so much for all of your informative videos and your amazing paintings! You are a great teacher! I have a question regarding that wall that as you said struggled.
    Can you make a video on how to "confront" chaotic patterns i.e as your brick wall? I really do struggle with things like that, and as in your video, I keep over painting them, erasing them, painting them again etc. My problem arises when there is intense texture on that subject and painting with bold brushstokes does not work. Thank you for your excellent videos and artistry again!

    • @IanRobertsMasteringComposition
      @IanRobertsMasteringComposition  Год назад +1

      I think when you say a pattern is chaotic you need to slow down and figure out how you can represent it more simply, Imply it. Or as you say you just keep making marks hoping something might work. There are lines of stones in that wall. They are laid down one on top of another. There is a pattern. Not an even one. But horizontals that sort of hold it together. I think you need to look at what you are painting in a situation like that and find a pattern that will carry the illusion. Or else half way in you'll find yourself lost and in chaos yourself. Hope that helps.

    Like everyone else, I want to see you do the copy, please! Two other comments: I am so glad you included the part of "muddling" things that are finished to detrimental affect. I'm sure guilty of that! And, those Russians, including many contemporary painters today, are so direct and bold in their paintings. I am in awe! thanks!
